Blue Post and Other WoW News: In which Zarhym wants LFR to say "okie dokie"

Blue posts
Hey folks,
So, just to be clear, we're certainly aware that the loot system in Raid Finder needs to be smarter, as there's currently not a way for the system to determine loot eligibility based on talent specialization or class. To use the OP's example, if a Strength weapon drops and a hunter rolls on it, the system says "Yep, a DPS player is rolling on it. Okie dokie. Here's your +100." (We should really find ways for the game to say "okie dokie" in your chat log.)
This obviously needs to change and we're in the middle of discussing potential short-term solutions, as a more long-term solution will require programming new tech into the system which will account for class/spec.
We only ask that you keep in mind patch 4.3 is our first implementation of Raid Finder and the "Need Plus" system. The design is quite complicated and requires further iteration to make loot distribution more intelligent.

We recognize the issue with duplicate drops being won by the same person as well. This is something we need to fix.

In the 25-player for Spine of Deathwing encounter, on Heroic difficulty, Blood Corruption: Earth appears to be triggering Astral Armor instead of the intended Blood of Neltharion. This issue will be corrected in patch 4.3.2.
In the meantime, we can confirm that Astral Armor is correctly providing same effect as two stacks of Blood of Neltharion

Another example from two days ago, some paladin in my battlegroup hit need on kiril and won over a hunter. His reply when asked why? "Money for NPC"

I am very sure I was in this exact LFR run as it happened. As I looked it up, he gave it to a hunter guildie that was also in the run.

@Dodgeballer
I play on the same server as those 2 you linked but I'm not in their guild.
Granted I haven't tried the LFR yet but I'll do my best to avoid being grouped with them.
Sheana Dec 9th 2011 12:53AM
Meh. At least they're "planning" on fixing it. Makes me feel good that they acknowledge the issues.
lividmonkey Dec 9th 2011 1:18AM
Notice how he used a hunter as the bone-headed player in the example...

it just shows how much the current team that is working on WoW doesn't give a crap. How could they NOT see this when they designed LFR.
Amaxe Dec 9th 2011 2:03AM
Probably because they have only a fraction of the manpower we tend to think they do.
Tom Dec 9th 2011 2:09AM
That actually is no indication of a lack of focus or a screw up. Unless you work at Blizzard and know more than you're letting on? As Blue indicated, the coding is complicated and is something they're fine-tuning over time. I hope come Mists will see a better implimentation of this LFR.
ahsanali Dec 9th 2011 2:30AM
@Tom It should definitely be better in MoP.
Here is what I think is going on, right now the raid finder only has the spec you queued as to go by. So the possibilities it works with are "tank, dps, healer".
The drops are also tagged as "tank, dps, healer". So if a str dps weapon drops, the +100 bonus matches to everyone who can use it. This is because in an earlier post they said they don't have the capability in the game to determine spec. For classes like rogues, locks, mages and hunters you don't have to worry about matching spec. But you do with druids and shamans who have two dps specs that use completely different stats.
With MoP, I expect that since they're revamping the talent system, they'll be able to build in tags to the specs and I expect these tags would be along the lines of "agi-melee", (maybe an "agi-tank"), "str-melee", "str-tank", "int-dps", "int-heal" and "int-dps". The loot that drops would also be flagged for a +100 need roll bonus on a tag match. This way, only people in the spec AND role matching a loot drop would get the +100 need bonus.
Right now the game doesn't have that information in an organized manner and instead of jury rigging this into existing code that they expect to replace, I think they just want to work on the revised version coming in MoP which will have much more granularity.
Sidfish Dec 9th 2011 6:49AM
They should have shelved the whole thing until MoP as opposed to releasing it in this state. They've gone from releasing things "when they're done" to "MoP will fix it". Personally I'd rather wait and have it done right. I know that's not popular opinion around here but it's a valid one.
Edymnion Dec 9th 2011 8:46AM
Seriously, they should have shelved it? What you're saying is that it would have been better to have DPS rolling on tank gear, and tanks ninja'ing healer gear? The current system isn't perfect, but it does at least keep people limited to getting gear for their role. Just because it can't tell the difference between Str DPS and Agi DPS *YET* doesn't mean none of it was worth it.
If they waited until things were 100% done before they released them, we wouldn't be playing anything right now. Think before you speak.
Smashbolt Dec 9th 2011 9:37AM
I actually read Sidfish's comment as to mean they should've shelved LFR altogether until MoP and release it all finished. I see the point in doing that. But Blizzard's lost a lot of subscribers this past year and SWTOR is coming out in less than two weeks. Ready or not, they kind of needed to release *something* big.

@ahsanali
To touch on your explanation of how the information is structured. When queuing with the raid finder, you are designated to a specific role. On the data end, these roles are all stored as part of the information of the raid. As such, if the code wants to determine eligibility, it only has to refer to the raid information to find out every person's role. However, if it were to look at class too, that would require the system to query the raid info, then query the specs of each individual in the role, and compare the specs to the item that dropped, which would also need additional information to specify which specs it would be useful for. Now, it could query the class spec information before the raid starts and store it for future use. Regardless of when it queries, it's still an added level of complexity and resources. Storing 3 roles (Tank, DPS, Heal) as compared to 3 roles and 25 specs is simpler.
Granted, this shouldn't be a huge roadblock and there's no reason (i can see from an outside perspective) that should prevent this from happening in the future, but I can totally understand why they didn't implement it to begin with. It's a mechanic that they can and will refine as time goes on.
drew.wrong Dec 9th 2011 2:58PM
@ Sidfish - What amazes me more than anything is that you are complaining that they released a new, completely optional feature in the game before you think it's ready. If you don't like it, don't use it. If you think it would have been better left to MoP, wait till MoP, then use it. But the rest of us are willing to accept that Blizzard can release some features in stages. I for one am glad for some new content I can use.

Yeah, it's annoying that dks and warriors can roll on and win agi rings and the polearm/1h axe/bow from Deathwing. Had a warrior win BOTH the axe and polearm yesterday when it dropped. Fortunately my hunter won the bow, otherwise I'd have been raging.
