I highly doubt it's the actual truth in this scenario. It's much more likely that he's just trying not to burn all his bridges in the game, and deflecting some of the heat off of himself. In which case, he's still a spineless man, but for entirely other reasons unrelated to his girlfriend "threatening" him. Like Scott points out, he has a lot to gain by lying about it right now, so it's the more likely situation, than his girlfriend actually threatening him and him complying.
