Breakfast Topic: What do you listen to while playing?
I don't listen to music while raiding, and especially not while PvPing. I need the audio cues to establish whether my spells are coming off, whether I'm critting (restoration shaman make a funny little noise when that happens), whether certain effects are landing, whether that warrior is Bladestorming, and so on. Of course there are visual clues as well, and for many people they will be sufficient, but I often find that, particularly in the Arena, I need all the help I can get! Also, while I do my best to keep track of every player at all times, in a 5v5 match, it's quite feasible that I can't keep my camera pointing at all 10 people, so the audio helps a great deal. I also find that music or TV can be distracting.
This is, of course, not leveled as a criticism to those who do play with music in the background, as ever with gaming is a case of diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. I can completely understand the use of music as a motivational tool or to amp yourself up for something challenging or to calm yourself down when things aren't going as you'd hoped.
But while I'm questing, or running dungeons, leveling professions, or running laps of Stormwind chatting to friends, I will often have some music playing or even the TV on in the background. I personally prefer some fairly easy listening, light music, to relax me while other players nerd rage. I'm currently leveling a discipline priest for the new Arena season, so there's sometimes a bit of anger coming my way when wipes happen, and music helps me stay calm! And, of course, there's the perennial Battleground rage to contend with, and music can help me maintain my Zen and laugh at it.
I listen mostly to fairly relaxed, mellow songs while I'm playing. Lana del Rey's Video Games is a current favorite, a very dear man recently introduced me to a lot of Van Morrison where I was only aware of a small part of his catalog, so that's on a lot. I also love listening to classical music while playing; Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique is a particular favorite.
Do you listen to music while playing? Do you have the TV on in the background? And if so, what's your preference in listening material?

I like immersion so I usually leave it at the WoW music. Having said that, there's nothing quite like grinding heroic 5-mans to the sound of old Disturbed albums! :-D

Same here. There are some pretty awesome music, some that I actually like to listen while working...

Nothing better doing Firelands with Benzin in the background :p
hairy_fedd Dec 13th 2011 5:51PM
as much as I love Rammstein, it's gotta be In Flames for Firelands raids

I listen to music (brutally heavy) or my wife yelling at me...whichever is louder.

When not doing a guild raid, usually podcasts. Raids are a mix of punk and metal, with some Pokemon gym leader battle music for Madness of Deathwing.

I joined a new band recently that kicked out their singer. I'm in the process of re writing an entire album's worth of melodies and lyrics. So I've been listening to the latest iterations on repeat for weeks.

I listen to my wife and kids. They desire lots of attention. Hard enough to engage in conversation while killing trash/bosses and tank at the same time, music would only make it much harder.

Epic boss batttle? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzFh9GuE0rA
Leveling (especially at night)? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5iOiLX5ppA
Killing Deathwing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uijFznzU7c
Otherwise...a mix of The Beatles, Gorillaz, or whatever the heck I'm feeling up to :)

I've got a playlist of various Deftones songs from their first album to now that is pretty much all I listen to while raiding. Though ICC was almost entirely the Diamond Eyes album, with Kings of Leon's "Closer" and Audioslave's "The last Remaining Light" tacked on.

I never listened to music while playing until I learned about www.spotify.com
Now I never play without music.
Nothing gets me more pumped for BGs like Woe Is Me - Number[s]

Recently, it's been Futurama and Family Guy dubbed into German due to being in a hotel in Paris for the next few months. I don't know French, so the french channels are out, but I understand enough German to get what they are saying on the available German channels.

If I'm pvping by myself then I'll log onto Pandora One and crank up my Bullet for My Valentine channel just loud enough to where I can still hear enemy rogues unstealth.

That header looks almost NSFW at first glance...
Usually I just listen to the in-game music, unless I'm in a raid, in which case the in-game sound goes off so I can clearly hear my raid leader.

It really depends. Sometimes the roommate will turn the TV on while we're playing, if we're just questing, hitting 5mans with guildies, or bopping around town.
When RPing, I like instrumentals. No words to distract me as I type--though I often do listen to lyrics as well--and it's often eerie how my randomizer will pick the perfect song for the moment. I definitely tend to listen to instrumental music when writing stories (for characters or in general) and doing homework. Mostly, though, I listen to lyrical music, either mine or my roommate's, depending on who turned it on first and has their headset off.
I will turn on WoW music for new zones and instances, or for old favorites like our recent guild RP run to Kara for newer players. But generally the music gets stale after the zillionth playthrough and I want to hear something else in the background. I can still hear the audio cues I need to with judicious use of volume control.
I know my raid leader loves the Soundtrack addon, using it to play specific music in various zones or during trash vs boss encounters to invoke mood in his own play--and indicate when a boss has hit a certain percentage, to kick in the triumphant hero music!
