Breakfast Topic: What do you listen to while playing?
I don't listen to music while raiding, and especially not while PvPing. I need the audio cues to establish whether my spells are coming off, whether I'm critting (restoration shaman make a funny little noise when that happens), whether certain effects are landing, whether that warrior is Bladestorming, and so on. Of course there are visual clues as well, and for many people they will be sufficient, but I often find that, particularly in the Arena, I need all the help I can get! Also, while I do my best to keep track of every player at all times, in a 5v5 match, it's quite feasible that I can't keep my camera pointing at all 10 people, so the audio helps a great deal. I also find that music or TV can be distracting.
This is, of course, not leveled as a criticism to those who do play with music in the background, as ever with gaming is a case of diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. I can completely understand the use of music as a motivational tool or to amp yourself up for something challenging or to calm yourself down when things aren't going as you'd hoped.
But while I'm questing, or running dungeons, leveling professions, or running laps of Stormwind chatting to friends, I will often have some music playing or even the TV on in the background. I personally prefer some fairly easy listening, light music, to relax me while other players nerd rage. I'm currently leveling a discipline priest for the new Arena season, so there's sometimes a bit of anger coming my way when wipes happen, and music helps me stay calm! And, of course, there's the perennial Battleground rage to contend with, and music can help me maintain my Zen and laugh at it.
I listen mostly to fairly relaxed, mellow songs while I'm playing. Lana del Rey's Video Games is a current favorite, a very dear man recently introduced me to a lot of Van Morrison where I was only aware of a small part of his catalog, so that's on a lot. I also love listening to classical music while playing; Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique is a particular favorite.
Do you listen to music while playing? Do you have the TV on in the background? And if so, what's your preference in listening material?

Nothing beats a night of progression to the sound of BB King... Lucille keeps me sane...

During raids? Nothing--keep it clear for Vent. For everything else, I guess it depends on my mood, but its usually playlists of Godsmack, Ronald Jenkees, ES Posthumus (makes EVERYTHING epic), even the Batman Begins/TDK original soundtracks, or I just get lazy and pick a random channel on my Pandora account.

Depends! If I'm doing PvP (like AV) I love to listen to Humans Being by Van Halen on repeat. I mean...The opening to that song was MADE for mount raiding! When I was getting the Explorers cheevo I listened to Poker face by Lady Gaga on repeat because the beat was in perfect sync with my Zulian Tiger the whole time xD (this was before Cata. no old world flying :( ) Aside from that, I have Pandora playing or my iTunes on shuffle. A Mix of Marilyn Manson, Creed, God Smack, Disturbed and Pearl Jam xD (pretty weird combo, huh?)

I have the National Public Radio on almost all the time. Sometimes I'll listen to podcasts while playing, unless I'm in a dungeon and then it's paused so I can focus.

I usually don't listen to music when raiding, because I need to be able to hear Vent well and the game. But if I'm dungeoning or questing, I almost always am listening to music! Rhapsody of Fire and Nightwish are probably my two favorite bands now, and lately I've been listening to a lot of ridiculous death metal also.
Right before a raid on Stormwind, I was listening to Ke$ha's "We R Who We R." It was just the right tempo and type of music for energizing before raiding, and now that's on my silly pre-raid playlist. Most of my WoW music is actually my driving music- upbeat, energetic, and a bit silly.

Rotersand, VNV Nation, Covenant, Seabound, Sisters of Mercy, Thrill Kill Kult, CombiChrist. Sometimes I listen to Digitally Imported Radio or Digital Gunfire if I want to have a DJ play for me.

Disney Channel!
If you ever wanted something to act as background that can be completely ignored, this is it: the energy is constant and you never feel like you missed something.

I prefer the in-game sounds for any game really. Especially in a competitive multiplayer settings (Such as Gears of War, my personal favorite shooter) the sounds your enemy makes are equally important compared to seeing them. You can't see behind you, but you certainly can hear behind you and around corners. In WoW I prefer in-game sounds on new content and raids, new content because I like to get the full effect of the atmosphere and raids because it's important to hear your raid leader and get those audio cues. I also like to hear the bosses talk for those little lore events. But for a round of dailys or the dungeon finder, kick up the jams, right?

Cole Porter's Anything Goes is pretty nice when grinding ore and Sondheim's A Little Night Music for those long leather grinds in the Obsidian Forest.

Often some good drone/shoegaze or my de facto goto Brian Jonestown Massacre while questing, and electronic/dub/house while raiding/dungeoning, but lately I've been burning through Ricky Gervais' radio shows and podcasts

This makes me happy (drone/shoegaze and BJM as the obvious go-to). Are you on last.fm? (i'm http://www.last.fm/user/theory_of_mind )

Hey, thanks :) No I'm not but I had a look at yours. Good stuff! Anton is the only artist prevalent in my lifetime that I would dare compare to my all time musical heroes (Dylan, Bowie, The Beatles...), the man is brilliant and prolific, familiar yet wondrous. It's a shame that his tendency towards self-sabotage keeps the world from hearing his stuff but then if it were any different he wouldn't be the person he is. It was odd to hear "Straight Up and Down" played at the Emmys this year (thanks of course to its use as the theme to Boardwalk Empire).

Right now all I want to do is put disturbed on and blast it through the house....except i have a headache and people are sleeping.
I listen to large variety of music, ranging from dubstep and metal to instrumental and soul. I also love any good wow parody.
Most of the time i have iTunes closed because I can't raid with music or someone will say something to me and i'll be completely oblivious.
Lamesu Dec 13th 2011 10:06AM
I prefer the default WoW music. For some reason, I like when the music changes by the zone I'm in. Maybe I'm just weird, though. If anyone has suggestions for alternative music (and addons to make the music work like the default music's behavior), that would be very helpful! =D

That song is just depressing.
There can be beauty in slow thoughtful music but really... don't listen to such emo-tional music, it'll tear you down over time.
