Massively's Star Wars: The Old Republic launch guide
On Tuesday afternoons, we typically link all of you to our sister site Massively's top stories of the week from all across the MMORPG genre via MMO Roundup. This week will be different. Outside of World of Warcraft, there's only one other MMO anybody wants to hear about this week. Star Wars: The Old Republic's prerelease head start begins today, and Massively has absolutely everything you need to go into the opening days of the game well prepared.
If you'll be playing The Old Republic, head over to Massively's TOR launch guide for class information, dungeon flashpoint walk-throughs, and anything else you might want.
If you're strictly a World of Warcraft player, you may want to take a look anyway. WoW can always learn from other games, and as a player, it never hurts to stay informed.

Don't worry she'll hold together. *rubs his wow.exe file* You hear me, baby? Hold together.
Pyromelter Dec 13th 2011 6:36PM
Is swtor.exe a quartet of tie fighters or something?
(I think your comment broke my irony bone rubi)

Maybe I will check out it some day, but for now I'm sticking with WoW. I always like to wait and see with new things, let other people be the guinea pigs.
Andres Dec 13th 2011 5:58PM
As someone who was a guinea pig in beta and release versions of City of Heroes, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, and Lord of the Rings Online, I heartily applaud your resolve. I would've saved a lot of time, money and frustration if I had done as you did!

I'll admit, I'm inordinately excited about this game, and I've had my copy pre-ordered since it was first available on Amazon.com. No matter what George Lucas does to his once-beloved franchise, there's still a little part of me that remembers being a boy and watching the original versions of the first three films on VHS.
That said, I've played a LOT of other MMORPGs and none of them have managed to unseat WoW in my heart or in my regular play-schedule. Age of Conan couldn't do it (largely because at the time the graphics requirements were impossible, and after level 20 it just sort of fell flat), Aion couldn't do it, City of Heroes (which was my first MMORPG and to which I came back once or twice) couldn't do it, Warhammer Online couldn't do it, Pirates of the Burning Sea couldn't do it, LotRO couldn't do it... Rift just looked like a tiresome retread, as did EQ2; and Wizard 101 and Puzzle Pirates, while fun, are more like an appetizer than a main-course. The only things that have even come close have been Dragon Age: Origins/Awakening (DA2 was pure crap) and getting my degrees, and even those couldn't keep me away from WoW for longer than a year.
Did Cataclysm include a lot of mis-steps and wasted opportunities? Absolutely, and I'm worried about Blizzard's increasingly slapdash approach to its most popular franchise. But Cataclysm also included a lot of features that have managed to keep me playing. I honestly don't think anything is going to take WoW's place for me, at least not for a good long while.

I don't know what the pre release is, but when does the regular launch occur?
Dragon Dec 13th 2011 6:10PM
Game launch is 12/20. Early access is 12/13-12/20 with access date based on when/if you did the preorder.

Don't downrate me, but am I the only one who isn't into Star Wars?
Corvana Dec 13th 2011 8:39PM
Actually, no. I have a friend from college who, to this date, still hasn't seen any of the movies. Weird, I know....
Corvana Dec 13th 2011 8:42PM
WoW lost me many months ago, for many reasons (I still come here for occasional entertainment). I am very much looking forward to SWTOR.
