Totem Talk: Gearing your enhancement shaman for Raid Finder

So, you want to queue for the Raid Finder on your enhancement shaman, but you don't quite have the required 372 item level for it yet. We've all learned tips and tricks over the year since Cataclysm launched to cheat the ilevel restrictions, like wearing restoration gear to inflate our ilevel. However, if you want to actually benefit the raid and increase your chances of downing bosses, those tricks are not the best way to go. There are multiple accessible 378 items for near every slot.
The first rule of getting geared for Raid Finder is to avoid Hour of Twilight like the plague. There's seriously only one drop in the instance that's worth getting, and that's the Clattering Claw. Dawnslayer Helm? Both our Erupting Volcanic Helmet and Scalp of the Bandit Prince put that ugly hit/haste helm to shame. Betrayer's Pauldrons are a possible good choice, if only because extensive testing by yours truly has proven that Mantle of the Fiery Protector does not actually exist. It's a myth. Flickering Shoulders of the Zephyr/Windstorm are both good choices to use over the Hour of Twilight shoulders, but getting a useful random enchant on an already random drop is not a sure bet.
Hour of Twilight also has the Cinch of the World Shaman as a quest reward. I'm so glad Blizzard decided to create an agility belt with shaman in the name and itemize it to be absolutely awful for the only spec of shaman that uses agility. Well played, Blizzard. If you're fresh to 85, this will unfortunately be your main belt choice, as the Firearrow Belt requires you to be honored with Avengers of Hyjal. However, you're a lucky shaman who has to run Firelands to deal with the itemization woes of the 4.3 heroics anyway, so you should be honored in no time at all!
End Time isn't much better
End Time doesn't fare significantly better than Hour of Twilight for enhancement gear. Cloak of the Banshee Queen drops off Echo of Sylvanas and echoes the rest of 4.3's agility gearing schema in being itemized perfectly for hunters. Thankfully, achieving friendly rep with Avengers of Hyjal gives you the Sleek Flamewrath Cloak. It's not perfect, but the hit rating on it makes it better than anything with crit/haste. That's not all, though. Rhyolith still drops his beautiful Dreadfire Drape, which will tide you over well into the Raid Finder.

Thankfully, End Time does have its upsides. Dead End Boots have a chance to drop off any of the Echoes you get, which gives you two chances to get them per instance. Hit/mastery is an awesome combination, and these boots are actually better than the only option out of Firelands, Decimation Treads. Time-Twister's Gauntlets are also a quest reward from End Time. These aren't half bad, but given that Erupting Volcanic Grips are only 1,650 justice points now and significantly better, you probably won't be using them very long.
Well of Eternity? Surprisingly well itemized!
Well of Eternity kind of makes up for the mediocrity of the rest of 4.3's new 5-mans. Trickster's Edge gives you slightly more crit and a little less expertise than the Gatecrasher off Baleroc but doesn't require a 10-man raid to get. It also drops off the first boss, which means you only need to commit to the instance for about 10 minutes if you just want it. Of course, I'd never actually advocate ditching a group after the item you wanted didn't drop, but I won't pretend it isn't a reality in MMO gaming.
Queen Azshara also drops a beautiful chestpiece in the Breastplate of the Queen's Guard, which is better than Flaming Core Chestguard out of Firelands. However, this is slightly diminished by the existence of the Erupting Volcanic Cuirass for 2,200 justice points. You'll likely have two pieces of your tier gear before you can even queue for 4.3 heroics. This is the beautiful part of 4.3 heroics for enhancement -- for all the terribly itemized pieces, it's a chore to get something better to replace them. For the well-itemized pieces, you'll replace them within a week of hitting 85.

This Just In: Justice points are cool, too
As already mentioned, tier gear will most likely be your first few purchases with justice points. After those are down, you can pick up the Splintered Brimstone Seal to fill in your other ring slot. Covenant of the Flame is a really solid purchase, too. It also comes with the added benefit of not needing to farm Hyjal dailies for over a month, unlike Relic of Elune's Shadow. Necklace of Smoke Signals will probably be your last justice point purchase, as it's not incredible. If you can get your hands on a Choker of the Vanquished Lord off Ragnaros, you should grab that instead. If you're broke or just don't want to shell out the money for Legion Bindings and you can't convince them to drop, Bracers of Forked Lightning are a good bet.
If you're really serious on just getting into Raid Finder, the 4.3 heroics give you a chance at some easily acquired, ilevel-boosting loot. However, if you really want to shine when in Dragon Soul, you can't limit yourself to just running heroics. You need to push on to Firelands, as head, shoulders, belt, and trinkets are all slots for which there are no better options than Firelands loot.

well where the heck is question time :/

It's sad that I am holding onto gear in my bag to switch to once the raid starts so that I don't have to bring my DPS down.
The new tier isn't any better. What the hell? I used to joke Blizzard hated enhancement, but this has latest expansion more or less screamed it. Daggers off of easy to get to bosses, swords occasionally, and all the off-set pieces tuned for hunters almost exclusively. Now the final tier looks like it was designed for hunters instead of enhancement?!

My shaman is not a character for whom I'm willing to pug firelands, so I got around the belt issue by making that my first valor purchase.
In happier news, even with some poorly-itemized gear from the heroics, I'm consistently in the top five of the dps charts in raid-finder. I'd call that pretty solid consolation.

2 problems here... People tying to gear for raid finder aren't likely to go into firelands for gear, and once you get there, the disadvantages of haste and crit won't matter. Firelands will be the last raid that nobody runs. Ease up on the itemization hate, ilvl is the only thing that matters in shooting for raid finder eligibility, and it's away easier to get them in 4.3 heroics. I have been 2nd in damage meter in raid finder with zero firelands gear drops. I will gladly take a 378 helm with haste/ crit over my 353 one

This, especially if you just reforge the highest crappy stat into your best stat (in this case, mastery). That's what I do with all the haste/mastery plate on my fury warrior (who much prefer crit/hit).

If I had access to Firelands, I probably wouldn't need to use LFR. Just saying.

Cinch of the World Shaman not optimal shaman loot?
Well, its presumed previous owner was wearing plate until a year ago, so it sort of stands to reason...

That comment. It wins. :)
Despite my main being an enhancement shammy. That wins.
Have an Internet, good sir!

"because extensive testing by yours truly has proven that Mantle of the Fiery Protector does not actually exist"
I never manage one either, and we down Staghelm several times. Other shoulder tokens went to off spec even but neither me or another enh shaman on my guild even manage a full 4 peace set on FL.
Gatecrashers? 1... total... of ALL the kills... 1.
mem0ryburn Dec 17th 2011 1:20PM
maybe you would manage a "4 peace set" if you all would just stop the killing
Ilmyrn Dec 17th 2011 1:46PM
And yet in my raid group, we were rolling on Vanquisher and Protector tokens to VENDOR because everyone had every offset shoulder and head piece they wanted, while we only had three Conqueror tokens drop the entire time we farmed Firelands. And this in a raid group with two Paladins and two Priests.
Mondi Dec 17th 2011 3:09PM
I feel your pain. I only managed one Gatecrasher too. What made it so much worse was the week they announced spell power weapons were going away and I kept telling people how badly I needed another Gatecrasher before the 4.3 drops, guess what dropped off Baleroc...
Another Eye of Purification. I've seen 6 of those drop, but we're not supposed to use those says Blizzard. I never once seen the mace that I would have taken as consolation prize.
But at least now I have a Clattering Claw so I do decent damage despite the fact that I look like I'm using a sock puppet for a main hand weapon.
Evelinda Dec 17th 2011 5:44PM
@mondi
It DOES look ridiculous when you have clattering claw... They really should have made it part of a pair, so you can get a half decent (giant space lobster) look going.
Though, who am I kidding, i'd still transmog them to the claw/fist of molten fury.

So what happened to the rest of the Twilight's Hammer? I know that the Burning Legion is still mostly in Outland, so we don't have to worry too much. The Scourge is mostly under Bolvar's control. But the Hammer is a different, unique story. These were people who willingly made a decision to join Deathwing's followers, whether out of fear or of a desire to be on the 'winning team.' Will we let them crawl back to us, or will we treat them all as war criminals? Or is this a moot point and have we killed pretty much every single one?
Archmage Dec 17th 2011 2:56PM
Yeah, there isn't really anyone running FL on my realm either. Seems to be a real disconnect here in what might be truly be optimal gear and what the reality of the server situation actually is.
Steffan Dec 17th 2011 4:24PM
I just want to point out that there are some of us (myself included) who had all of 2 "raids" worth of experience before the Raid Finder (halfway through BoT 10 as a DK, and a trash run of FL as my shaman). Saying that there's, "There's seriously only one drop...worth getting" is a little overstated. Especially if you're still running around with 353s from the Troll heroics.
I know that it was all in the effort to say "crit and haste are crap-tacular, get mastery," but still I think that you should be a smidge more mindful of your audience.
My rant out of the way, I appreciate the guide and still enjoy your articles.

Agree... I was ecstatic to finally get some new shoulders and a helm. My guild currently isn't very active in raiding, and when they do, it isn't during times I can usually go. The new equip has been exciting for me. Of course I want the firelands belt, cloak etc, but I have no access so while I am a little disappointed the new zones are better geared for hunters it seems, I am still very excited about new loot.
and I really want a claw. I have still not seen it drop.
