Breakfast Topic: What features from other games would you like to see in WoW?

EverQuest had its issues and Blizzard improved on most of them, but one thing EQ had that WoW doesn't is surnames. Once you hit level 20, you could choose a surname for your character. Star Wars:The Old Republic is implementing something similar, only you create a family name for all of your characters. I want to have Roblinator Shinycollector or Peenk Sparkles.
I would also love a sidekick or mentor system like in City of Heroes. Two players of vastly different levels can play together by temporarily kicking up the level of the sidekick or temporarily lowering the level of the higher-level character. I know we have Recruit-A-Friend and there are all those levels to be given, but it's just not the same as playing together in level-appropriate content with balanced experience gain. I want to invite friends to play and run dungeons together, not run them through dungeons.
Something I think we all would like to see is the level of character customization we find in so many other MMOs. I don't need to choose nose size or ear placement, but I would like to be able to choose a body type (like a healthier blood elf) and tattoos, scars, cosmetics, warts or whatever. For Forsaken body types, one of the choices could be to not have my bones sticking out of my clothes! Gosh, I want that so much. I'm OK with bones sticking out of my skin, but really, the clothes thing doesn't make much sense and is ugh-lee.
The thing that has always intrigued me about single-player roleplaying games and now SW:TOR is that there are often choices when doing quests and those choices affect your character. Yes, WoW has reputations that change how some NPCs react to us. But you can only select Accept or Cancel on a quest -- not really a choice. I wish I could take my character along her own path of neutral goodness and have that affect her options in the future, rather than having to torture things or sort through poop to progress through the story.
What surname would you choose? How would you like to customize your character? What are the features from other games that you would like to see in WoW?

The colored sparkle thing just kind of bugs me. Plus people would start screaming that rng is not in fact, rng. granted, they do that already

It's nice, once you have it, it's hard to go back without it.
Running around in SWTOR beta, if I saw light blue....and I was in a hurry...skip it. If I saw anything else I always stopped to pick it up.
AOE helps looting for sure, but sometimes the mobs are too spread out for AOE to really combine them, the color info helps.
Brett Porter Dec 19th 2011 11:19AM
Huh... I honestly didn't even notice the coloured sparkles when in beta. Interesting!

Having low level mobs not agro when I walk by like COH.
mem0ryburn Dec 19th 2011 8:29AM
I'm pretty sure the low level mobs already have a low enough aggro. I wouldn't really want it to be nonexistent. You can outrun them or one hit them, is that really a problem for you?

-AoE looting
-Maybe a variant of TOR where the loot sparkles change color based on the item quality.
-Guild and/or player housing. The argument I always here is, "The cities will be ghost towns!" Oh, you mean I won't get to see gold sellers, trolls and naked Nelfs dancing by the auctioneers? Please....
-Shared bank space
-A LOT more account bound stuff. If you hit exalted rep on one toon, they should be able to purchase anything from the quartermaster and send it to an alt. Would make gearing alts a HECK of a lot quicker.
mem0ryburn Dec 19th 2011 8:42AM
As much as I want player housing you are exemplifying exactly why Blizzard doesn't think it will be positive for the game and I completely agree with them. Do I want my own personal little space I can maybe customize and call home? Yes. Do I want it at the cost of seeing empty streets in even the most populated of cities? No, I don't. Ironforge is depressing because of how empty it is, but right now at least I know I can take the tram to SW if I want to see life somewhere. Take that away and it's one big, bold move towards making the game a little more boring. Perhaps there's a way around this but as it is, and as much as I really really want it, I just don't think it's good for the game.
And what is this "shared bank space", what do you mean?
mem0ryburn Dec 19th 2011 8:48AM
Do you mean between your alts? That seems unnecessary, especially with instant mail between alts, but I'm sure some might find it useful. Perhaps for holiday items or whatever. Maybe this isn't even what you're referring to, I don't know.
And maybe player housing could work if there were limits to what you could access while inside like no /2 or something.
Plaguewood Dec 19th 2011 9:34AM
@mem0ryburn: With TOR being released, the game is hurting as it is. I cannot tell you how many people in game and out I personally know that have left WoW this past year, both for TOR and for just how much they disliked Cat. Do you really think it matters at this point if IF or SW have a few less people in them? Pretty soon you're only going to have "sandbox players" left as it is.
And yes, shared bank space is nice, particularly when you don't have to log in and off six different alts to make something. It's a quality of life thing, not a game changer.
mem0ryburn Dec 19th 2011 9:48AM
Yeah 10,000,000 players during an expansion nobody seems to like. Poor Blizz. /rolleyes
Bapo Dec 19th 2011 9:56AM
Plague, you make it sound like that's all capital cities are, when that's not true, and it wouldn't be "a few less people in SW or IF" it would be "All these cities are ghost towns and you no longer see anyone in game, except for in instances".
My main thing with "BoA" items is that I really wish it were BoA and would be able to be sent cross realm. I miss that bug ;_;
loop_not_defined Dec 19th 2011 10:15AM
I think it would be weirder if wolves, undead, and ghosts pretended you didn't exist, even as you despoiled their lair.
We can fly in Azeroth. Aggro is largely a non-issue at this point.

Megaman 2 boss selection instance :)
Megaman 2. You were expected, in order to access to Dr Willy, to kill again each of the previous boss, but with their own weapons you've previously acquired from their first kill.
Entering in a dungeon, where you will be able to experience again a previous boss fight such as Kil'Jaeden, Vaelastrasz, etc, but with our lvl 85 items, would be amazing.
Let's call it "The Cavern of Time". Sounds familiar? :)
Gordal Dec 19th 2011 10:33AM
Thrall's balls, no. There's already enough complaining about recycling bosses, boss mechanics, and dungeon gimmicks that forcing a Mega Man-esque boss rush on the players is likely to guarantee they won't bother running the instance, even if the boss is just there to be steamrolled by outgeared players.

I`d like a trade skill experimentation mode, as a way to discover new stuff,
Peebers Dec 19th 2011 9:40AM
i really liked how interactive profs were in EQ2.
eirinefrostblade Dec 19th 2011 8:42AM
A greater range of character body types (and heights!) would be nice, as would more cosmetic features like scars and tattoos. I'd love to see guild housing like on Runes of Magic. If my little rp guild could have one from a phenomenal amount of mat farming, we'd have one as soon as possible.
PeeWee Dec 19th 2011 8:50AM
+AOE loot
+Prefix-, and suffix titles. "Loremaster PeeWee, Champion of the Frozen Wastes."
+Surnames.
+Public quests

Housing! And personal vendors. One of the things I remember with great fondness from Ultima Online was housing. Being able to customize your house and make your very own space with storage options. So all the characters in WoW are homeless people. Lovely. And vendors! In Ultima Online you could set a vendor outside your house to sell your crafted wares. When you found a great vendor, you had to travel to him. Friends would tell friends and it was like a hopping trip. If the vendor was out of the item you were looking for you'd have to return at another time and hope it was there again! So many wonderful things could have been borrowed from UO. Runes of recall? WoW so needs those.
