Two Bosses Enter: Yorg Stormheart vs. Archmage Aethas Sunreaver

This, my friends, is a powerhouse match. The Injuries in Icecrown. The Rumble in the Halls of Reflection. The Gore in the Glacier. The Damage in Dalaran. Yorg Stormheart, immovable king of the Frostborn dwarves, strides into the arena to battle one of the single most powerful mages from one of the single most powerful families of elves, Archmage Aethas Sunreaver. Horde or Alliance, Sunreaver or Frostborn, we are all getting a ridiculously awesome match tonight.
In our last exciting episode of Two Bosses Enter, Ishanah of the Aldor priests had the horrible misfortune of going up against Brann Bronzebeard, expert explorer and mega-fan favorite of the tournament. There wasn't any chance in hell for Ishanah to escape from this massacre, so let's go look at the scoreboard just to make sure it wasn't an embarrassing defeat, at least.
Guess not. Ishanah, you're out of here, pal.
Now's your chance to pitch in and make this world a better place by choosing who you feel wins the match between Yorg Stormheart and Archmage Aethas Sunreaver. Your vote decides the fate of us all.

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

When Yorg took his victory against Voren'thal the Seer, many Scryers fans wondered how such a powerful mage could be defeated by an easily kited dwarf warrior. I mean, really. Mages, you are the bane of my existence, of all warriors' existence, no matter race or creed. Not bitter.
Yorg smashed his way into this bracket with a penchant for defeating mages in the ring. His next matchup is a tough one, however, and no matter what he believed Voren'thal was capable of, he hasn't seen anything yet.
Something that always struck me as a fun story element with the dwarves in Warcraft lore was their utter resilience. They just don't stop. It's not about strength or whatever but about a weird innate tenacity or fortitude. Things just don't bother them as much as other races, and that also applies to their durability. I don't know ... It's always been one of my more favorite aspects of the dwarves.
We reached out to Yorg (or as he is known as more commonly, Muradin Bronzebeard), one of the three rulers on the Council of Three Hammers, for a pre-fight statement:
WoW Insider: Muradin, what do you think about going toe-to-toe with one of the most powerful mages in existence? His mastery of the arcane is unbelieveable. Will Yorg Stormheart conquer his next opponent and make it into the final match? You'll decide soon, won't you?
Muradin: I've been dealing with the arcane for a long time, lad, and it never caused me any problems. Ye can learn magic. Ye can't learn what I got.
WI: He's like, really good though.
Muradin: So am I, lad. So am I.

As Yorg Stormheart has proven that he is adept at besting mages in the ring, so too has Aethas Sunreaver proven he is a warrior's worst nightmare. After besting the leader of the Northrend taunka Roanauk Icemist, Aethas enters this next matchup with the tools and wisdom of finishing off melee champions.
It is no accident that Aethas has made it to the next round of the tournament. His Horde ties and proud blood elven status make him a crowd favorite as well as one of the coolest heroes of Wrath of the Lich King. Not only was his armor totally badass, but you knew this guy was something special when you only got to see him in images and projections all during Dragonblight. He was everywhere you were and more. Aethas, you're pretty cool in my book.
One day, when all is quiet and the world is at peace again, Aethas Sunreaver will be able to return to Silvermoon and make mages proud to be at the helm of the blood elves again. After all, there are rumors that Aethas just might have what it takes to follow in the footsteps of another very important blood elf member of the Kirin Tor.

Yeah, he won. To be completely honest, I love how these fights with Brann have been progressing in people's accounts of the fight. Ishanah is completely, utterly outmatched by the accidental destruction of something precious, or Brann just tosses people random artifacts to hold that melt them, send them to another dimension, or put them out of commission long enough for Brann to be declared the winner. If you go up against Brann Bronzebeard, prepare to be destroyed by luck, chance, and being around Brann.
Psiwave's comment was very telling, especially about the nature of the fights in this exhibition season. Many players' loyalties lie with their trusted companion and friend even though his stature and power don't really dictate his winning potential. Spoiler alert -- this is all fake and it's just for fun:
Bran can't win this, there's no way he can win this.... Can't bring self to vote against bran....Reader Lokanaya had two awesome scenarios for how this fight would play out, each with its own fun flavor. The first pits Brann against Ishanah during Brann's lunch time and -- well, you'll see:
Not even for the lore.. Or the /waggle
Votes bran
Sobs.
Ishanah and Brann glare at each from across the Arena. All of a sudden, Brann declares, "I'm getting a wee bit peckish." and pulls out his lunchbox. Ishanah blinks in surprise and attacks him with the Light while Brann is digging through his lunch.Classic Brann! Always keeping his most powerful artifacts and finds in his lunch box. The second scenario hits a little closer to home, because I think that damn dwarf tricked me into doing similar things as I've adventured around with him. What a needy guy.
"Oops!" he says as the attack hits him. He fumbles and drops his lunchbox. As it hits the ground, Old Gods, Titan constructs, and every ancient evil ever comes out and conviently attacks Ishanah. She doesn't stand a chance. After a bit, Brann calmy walks over and picks it up. As all the ancient evils vanish, all Brann can think is, "Wait until the boys in Ironforge hear about this!"
"Brann, knowing your tendency to attract Old Gods," Tirion says. "We've decided that any victory that you achieve via ancient evils will disqualify you."Well, there you have it. Brann Bronzebeard moves on to the final round. Who will be his opponent? Decide for me, please, because I don't want to have to make this call. Anything you guys choose will be a fun ride, but choose wisely!
"But how am I supposed to win now? Ye know that's what I'm best at!" Brann complains.
"If that's all you're able to do, then perhaps you should not be here. The stadium can't take any more attacks from Titans or Old Gods." Tirion replied. "Now, begin!"
"Your dungeon-delving ways end here, dwarf. Without those "accidents" you do not stand a chance!" Ishanah proclaimed.
"Hmm... I think I know another way." The dwarf pulled out a piece of paper and wrote something on it before putting it into an envelope and sending it off. The priestess watched curiously against her better judgement.
Not 30 seconds after it had disappeared, a dull roar began, gradually getting louder. Ishanah cocked her head curiously. "What is--" She began to say before a mob of adventurers of all races and classes mowed her over. In the chaos, a copy of the letter Brann had written was blown over. Chuckling softly, he picked it up and read it again. Basically, it said that Ishanah had powerful equipment and anybody who participated in killing her got one of the many, many weapons Brann had just lying around at his house. Well, it wasn't any forbidden, ancient whatever, was it?
Still chuckling, he walked out of the arena and went back to digging to deep, until next fight that is!

It has to be Yorg. Who else but a fellow Bronzebeard could stand against Brann.
Just ask Magni...

The fight between Yorg Stormheart and Brann Bronzebeard should be done in the traditional Dwarven custom. A drinking contest!
clundgren Dec 19th 2011 9:17PM
I'm not voting for Aethas because he's really Kael'Thas and totally outclasses Muradin.
I'm not voting for Aethas because mages hard counter warriors.
I'm not even voting Aethas because I feel bad for a guy who has to hide his perfect Belf hair behind an ugly iron mask.
No, I'm voting Aethas because he never made me wait through five minutes of RP that I've seen a million times before. There's something to be said for clickable quest text.

Avatar form. Smashing giant worms in the face.
Yeah, that's STILL why I'm voting for Yorg.

Aethas or Yorg? Blood elf, mage-y goodness, or a possible drinking contest between 2 dwarven brothers as the finale? Aaaeeethmnmmmrryorg.
(PS That interview with Muradin makes me want a new Ask a Faction Leader. Those articles were great!)

This match up is a wielder of some of the strongest magics know to mortals and a dwarf that has basically survived an attack from the soul of the Lich King, who you would think has much more magic damage. To clear that up, after Arthas took the Frostmourne and went insane in the membrane he destroyed most of Dalaran. This was him borrowing the Lich King's power before putting on the helm and fusing souls. So If Yorg can stand a shot from the Lich King, then survive in the wastes of Northrend, and rise to prominence among the frost dwarves, he can handle one mage. Besides, what plate wearer can't handle a clothie? May be hard pressed to kill sometimes but still.

Avatar + Stormbolt = Dead Aethas
Really, I'm with Yorg, if only because I really loved Muradin and his ass kickin' back in WCIII.

Bronzebeards for life!

This one is going to be close. You have two incredibly powerful leaders who have been through loads in their lives. But my money is on Stormheart - partially because I love him as a character and also because of his endurance and determination. He walked from Frostmourne's cave after being stabbed with a flying chunk of ice, lost most of his blood, then proceed to beat up a giant worm. He's a TANK.
Plus, I'd love to see the two brothers go head-to-head. Brann's incredible luck and awesomeness against Yorg's power and, well, awesomeness.

The Lich King couldn't kill Yorg, what chance does one measly Blood Elf mage have?
'The arena gates shut behind Aethas, facing down the indomitable dwarven king. A twist of arcane magic sends a tremendous fireball roaring down on Yorg before the dwarf can so much as settle his stance, knocking him flat on his back. Surely it couldn't be that easy?
Yorg climbs to his feet, though, beginning to trudge across the ring as Aethas pelts him with frostbolt after frostbolt. The ice missiles slow him, but they don't stop him - unnerved by his enemy's resilience, the mage freezes Yorg solid in a block of ice and teleports back to the other side of the room, clearing the range again. But before he can wind up for a second pyroblast, Yorg smashes his way free of the icy prison and lumbers towards Aethas again, frostbolts impacting on his barrel chest with less effect than they had before. A point-blank blast of blinding fire buys the blood elf time to teleport to safety again, and retreat backwards from the implacable dwarf while flinging arcane missiles, fire blasts, and shards of cutting ice, none of which seem to faze Yorg in the slightest.
It seems to go on for hours, Aethas trying every magical trick in his book and any others. Yorg took them all and kept on coming, till the mage was drained of his power, gasping and exhausted from the endless round-and-round retreating. "What does it take to kill you, dwarf?"
Yorg smiled through his heat blisters, burn marks, and coating of ice crystals. "More than you, elf. More than you." His skin turned dark as stone, and he abruptly grew in size to tower over the drained archmage. Aethas's second-to-last thought was noting how the dwarf's hammer was almost as big as Aethas himself now. His last thought was how it looked even bigger flying point-blank into one's face.'

The crowd screams its approval as Yorg Stormheart enters the arena. Any lesser person would feel intimidated by the obvious love the crowd holds for the dwarf.
Aethas is unfazed.
Already he has has developed several strategy's for dealing with his opponent. Glancing around the arena floor he considers the structural integrity of the stadium. It wouldnt do to get too excited - Tirion might get annoyed.
"Well Dwarf you've been in the arena several seconds already and have yet to charge, im surp-" Aethas' shields activate and absorb the blow of Yorg's Stormbolt.
"Nevermind" he mutter's as Yorg lets loose a warcry and charges.
"You will not prevail" Aethas calmly announces as he teleports behind the charging mountain king and promptly Pyroblasts him.
As the smoke clears he see's a singed Yorg still standing and looking at him with his head cocked.
"That the best ye got lad? Bah, you'd best step yo-"
Aethas hits him with another Pyroblast.
This time he doesn't wait for the smoke to clear but decides to cast a Flamestrike on the area.
"Fire elf? Ye be castin fire spells? On me? All they do is warm me toes a tad! I'll show you a REAL attack!"
Charging out of the inferno Yorg activates his Avatar ability increasing his size and strength considerably.
"Interesting..." Aethas mutters.
Backpedaling to try and keep his distance from the enraged mountain king, Aethas chain casts Arcane blast to slow him down - to little effect.
"Bah, your pathetic spells do nothing to me elf!" Yorg exclaims as he brings his mighty warhammer down upon Aethas feeling a bone jarring impact as it solidly connects.
Lifting his hammer slightly he see's Aethas looking up at him.
The Mana shield around Aethas explodes and sends Yorg skidding backwards.
"Ye be running out of tricks soon elf!" Yorg shouts as he once again charges at Aethas.
Aethas smiles shrewdly and Levitates into the air out of range of Yorgs attack.
Yorg lets loose another warcry and hurls a stormbolt at Aethas again, knocking him from the sky.
"Ye be done now Elf" Yorg states as he advances upon a dazed Aethas.
"I have not come this far to be stopped!" Aethas growls as he teleports behind the dwarf.
Arcane energy courses through Aethas as he channels a spell and summons a Phoenix to assist him.
"By the power of the sun" Aethas states, sending his Phoenix to attack the Mountain King.
"Ye really think a bird is going to beat me elf? Ye be Daft" Yorg laughs as the Phoenix swoops down upon him.
Yorg swings his hammer and connects solidly against the Phoenix which then explodes in his face.
Dazed, Yorg stumbles backwards only to be frozen to the ground as Aethas Frost Nova's him.
Glancing behind he see's Aethas channeling another spell not a foot away.
"The bird was merely a distraction. Now you will taste true power." states Aethas as a blue beam of arcane energy shoots out of his hand and strikes the Dwarf breaking the Ice holding him and sending him tumbling backwards.
Shaking off the hit Yorg rises to his feet and glances up.
"What the-"
The Phoenix egg explodes in his face throwing him backwards again.
Yorg attempts to get to his feet only to be attacked by Aethas' Phoenix.
"Ye be starting to irritate me elf!" Yorg roars as he swings his hammer at the Phoenix and misses.
Readying for another swing Yorg is suddenly engulfed in flames as Aethas' flamestrike hits.
"Time to end this" Aethas states casting Gravity Lapse.
"What the- What have ye done elf?!" cries Yorg as he floats into the air.
Aethas answers with a Pyroblast to the face.
"Ye attacks barely tickle elf!" Yorg cries from amidst a cloud of ash and flame.
"Delaying tactics Dwarf." says Aethas smiling shrewdly.
Yorg's Avatar ability fades and he reverts to normal size.
"As you see, I have many weapons in my arsenal...."
"Oh ye dirty stinkin-" Yorg growls before he's hit with a series of Pyroblasts and is attacked by Aethas' Phoenix.
The smoke clears. His Phoenix is but ashes upon the arena floor. Yorg Stormheart lies singed and beaten before him.
"You gambled. And Lost."

let's just face facts. we're headed for an epic battle of the bronzebeards.
the real thing to decide is, what form of battle will it be?
drinking contest? maybe for warm-ups.
poker? actually this might work.
monopoly? oh the comedic potential.
tiddlywinks? for some reason this works best as a manga, with lots of speed lines.
