The Star Wars Insider Show Episode 225: Ham bomb

At the end of this week's show, the mailman came to the door of Mat McCurley's apartment with a package from Matt Rossi. It had an aroma of succulent ham meat surrounding it, inviting the hungry McCurley to quickly open it up and see what was inside.
The last we heard from Mat were a few clinks on the floor, followed by the boisterous cackle of Matt Rossi.
Did Rossi just send McCurley a ham bomb? Will our hero survive this devastating blow from the other half of Mat'Matt the Ogre? Why is Mat's eye really black and blue?

I read the title "The STAR WARS Insider Show" and did a double-take.

I hear you on the voice acting issue, but if you listen to the files for the Rogue legendary events, the voice acting is incredibly good for WoW's standards. If the jerky emote animations hadn't ruined it, this scene would have been very engaging thanks to the voice acting.

Well, it's good that they buried good voice acting on a quest less than 10% of the player base can even START.

I thought class quests were too much work for too little gain, according to Blizzard? Guess this one doesn't count, somehow.

Give me a break... if I wanted to hear MORE about SWTOR I would listen to a Podcast about that game.
I listen every week, but I am not even going to download this one.

They talked mostly about what WoW can learn from SWTOR, and vice versa.
for example
Wow needs aoe looting
SWTOR needs to stop the stupid thing of having ranks to spells
Besides, Rossi tells a great story about a dream he had, it's worth it for that.

Thanks Pyro,
A good Rossi story is worth a download!

Ironically, the biggest news of the week was that a real contender in the MMO market was coming out and it's in direct competition with the big man on campus. Talking about the mechanics of the genre is important for our show, I think. I like opening it up to the broad because of how much WoW has influenced.

The BIG problem for me is that Star wars is not released Down Under until March (maybe)

Thanks, Rossi. Of all the days to post a pod cast wherein you talk about ham bombs...it just had to be the day my wife told me to order our Christmas ham.
o.O
Anyone know where I might be able to rent a bomb sniffing dog?

SW: shrug, just the next game made purely to get to the subscription money Blizzard stumbled over by accident.
The secret of WOW ? Blizzard just wanted to make a GREAT world and an MMO with 500K players.
The rest wants to make a subscription based game to get to the money pit.
But what really kills these trials after 3 to 4 months is the fact their players play with a WOW staged mind. They want something different but WOW is burned into their heads.
This makes for the most ridiculous game creations, like healers in SW or the exact same 3 fold 2004'ish talent trees and BG's where the Dark Force just plays basketball against the good guys in a sporting hall.
At least Diablo 3 will have lesser WOW vocabulary then all those "I want some subs too" copies, which is a kind of funny. Blizzard brings more diversion throughout all of their on line games then the rest of the would wanna be's.
I don't think Blizzard can learn anything from SW, unless the fact that people buy things whatever the lack of a breathing living world, fake lineair gameplay, no day/night cycles or critters.
Blizz: better next time put out an mmorpg with painted background cities and mountains, those players don't notice it ... for the first days anyway.

One clarification, SWTOR *crafting* takes _one_ minute per item. The gathering professions are what take 3+ minutes to do.
What I do is have my crew members to the gathering while I quest with my current companion. Then in town I do crafting and disenchanting.
Mathew McCurley Dec 21st 2011 9:11AM
I am crafting items in SWTOR that take several minutes to make.
Turtell Dec 21st 2011 8:08PM
The higher quality things take more time. However, you can lower the time it takes to make things in several ways. It's really not that bad, especially since it's just the companions doing it.

I have...exactly 0 to say about Star Wars. I do want to play it, but I'm currently sitting on about $.75. Not gonna happen. Maybe sometime I'll try it out. I do need to expand my game playing as WoW is the only game I play (because it's the only game I can manage to play by myself, but you know).
Question for you guys: I'm kind of curious to try a tank. I love to DPS (ranged) and have found healing to be quite enjoyable (on my Shaman). What tank would you guys recommend for a beginner (without heirlooms. I am officially to invested in all my characters on Silver Hand to delete any of them).
hwacha Dec 21st 2011 12:31PM
I would suggest Skyrim to you, a one-time cost for a single player game that seems like it would have a lot of replay value. My husband and I are playing and have taken very different approaches, and I really like being able to just put that world on hold because I have a raid with my WoW guild.
As to your tank, a druid or paladin might be good for you. I havent leveled a pally past 40 and didnt find it engaging, but lots of people seem to love it. I've never leveled a druid as feral but switch between resto and balance all the time. If you end up really hating either you can always turn to healing :)

Just got around to listening to this, having de-subbed from the itunes feed a while back. Really appreciated the unannounced SWTOR plot spoiler. Ftr, I didn't know *that*. Obviously I'm some kind of weird anomalous internet user who doesn't pore over information on plot-centric games in advance. I've also somehow managed to look a reviews of ToR, read news stories about ToR, check out class-guides for ToR and listen to podcasts specifically about ToR and still not have any of the plot reveals spoiled.
I'm probably going to vote with my feet in any case, but you guys could really do with revising your approach to this sort of thing. There's no need for it, or significant benefit from it.
