As long as the video game industry hovers at ~15% female developers TOTAL, this type of balance won't ever happen. You have to have people who are strong writers and have a wide world view to allow for strong female characters that aren't consumed by relationships they are in. It's really hard for a male to not do this, without even really deciding or intending to do so, it just happens when they are writing. To most people, that's just "normal", so they write it that way, never considering that it ISN'T how that character would really respond.Add to that the chances of a woman (do we even know if there are *any* female writers on staff at Blizzard that could go toe to toe with Metzen?) being in the game industry, being in a position to write, and being a good writer themselves, so that they could balance the characters so that a strong female isn't "rolled" into the character of the strong male they choose to love, is extremely unlikely.

The only woman I know of that has any sway in the world of Azeroth is Christie Golden, and one could argue that she doesn't really create anything substantial, but just presents Metzen's and Blizzard's stories in a very pleasing way.I think it would be a really good thing if Metzen got Golden on board to write some actual in-game stuff and maybe became an advocate for some of the things that Alex stated in the above article.

The thing is, she only has sway in the books she writes. She doesn't have sway on the game, and nor should she necessarily. Being a good writer does not automatically make one a good video game writer. (In fact it is very very hard to transition from one to the other, because ALL the rules change.)I guess she is the closest we could hope for. Now we need to figure out if she can create strong women who can love a strong man and somehow manage to balance that. From what I understand though, the outside writers have to get everything cleared by the "team" that Metzen leads that handles all the writing for the universe. All Metzen has to do is be like "Eh, I like her better when Malfurion is around..." And we are completely blocked.

I've been wondering this, too. I look at the photos of staffers that Blizz uses during Blizzcon and don't see any women. I actually read the credits for all of the games once and the number of female names in ANY of the departments was pretty sad. And then you have the whole Worgen female model debacle - we got a chicken cluck for our LOL emote for how long????
