You know, the whole time I was reading this, one thought ran through my head over and over.
Fandral Friggin' Staghelm.
Right up until getting corrupted by the Old Gods, Fandral is everything Night Elves needed.
Aggressive? Check. You think the Horde would have been able to clearcut Ashenvale if Fandral was in charge?
Confidant? Check. If for no other reason than that he'd stand up to every other faction leader when he disagreed with them. This guy didn't even feel the need to pretend to like you when you were helping him bring his son back to life. Do you think he'd go along with (Insert Alliance Leader Here)'s harebrained scheme to do somethign just because they were the King of Stormwind/Ironforge/Gilneas? Heck, he kept Alliance players jumping to bring him piles of dirt for the chance at a cloth chest with Str and Agi on it for two whole expansions.
Willing to buck the establishment? Check. Fandral's got PLANS, and it doesn't matter if you're the Cenarion Circle, the Aspects, or sentient life on Azeroth, you can get on board or you can get run over, Chuckles.
The sort of guy who would take the fight to the Horde? You bet (Oh, if only he'd gotten a chance after Blizzard realized having leaders do things was good). Hey Horde, remember all those trees you tried to cut down? Well, they're surrounding Orgrimmar and they are not happy. (Cue Isengard Part Two: Ent-ageddon.)

I LOVED Fandral in every conceivable way. You have no idea how badly it grieves me that Blizzard threw him away as an out and out villain rather than using him as an actual figure among the night elves.

I so, so agree with this. I think one of Blizzard's biggest lore missteps this expansion was turning Fandral and Maiev into villains instead of making them agitators in Night Elf Society for a more direct approach to combating the Horde. It was a waste of two amazing characters.

That's the saddest part - all that tragic build-up, with him being an absolute jerk who was still right about everything.. to have him trade his beard for a twirly mustache and villain hat to play minion for a random big boss. Off-Screen.
(If he had to be a bad guy, he should have gotten some better explanation and come back as an Emerald Nightmare avatar to restore the lost nature. Not "I angry and I burn you nao, kthanx?")

For a Night Elf character not introduced until the MMO Character Assassination that claimed Tyrande, Fandral was surprisingly... well... Night Elven.
I always wondered why he and Tyrande were ever at odds. He'd be her biggest supporter if she were the Tyrande I grew up with.

Fandral was never a character I liked, but he was one that had potential to be interesting. It's a shame he went the standard insanity -> destruction route.
