Well done, a someone who thinks about wow's weaknesses, I'm really enjoying this series of articles! Might I suggest going into neutral factions when you're done with Horde and Alliance? (Argent Crusade, Ebon Blade, Cenarion Circle, Dalaran, etc...)
You pegged something that hasn't really floated into my mind before. I'd always taken it for granted that Malfurion is alliance without considering it before, but you're absolutely right about him being truly neutral. And I think that's about all that needs to be said, he can still carry on as Tyrande's true love, but they do, (metaphorically, and literally live in different worlds.) I say let him be Neutral, I can respect him if he's neutral, but if I look at him as alliance, he's just another massively failed faction leader.
Now Tyrande.... who else has the righteous fury to counter Garrosh's savage brutality?
It's funny, they say in the RPG books or whatever, that a zeppelin ride from the sunwell to booty bay takes 88 days. It seems silly that the humans, dwarves, and elves could be expected to contribute much against the orcs in ashenvale. What we need to remember is that the alliance and horde are scattered. The fight against the orcs is on the night elves, it's their homeland.
I want to see a Tyrande that becomes ruthless in holding the line against the horde, the night elves are hemmorhaging land like the BP pipeline was hemmorhaging oil. I want her to be a gounter to garrosh, except where he's savage and ruthless, she would be righteous and merciless. (hint: nearly the same!)
Q for everyone else though:
Do you think that the expectation of a new continent in each expansion is a hinderance to good plot development? I mean, say we got an expansion where we get awesome war storylines playing out in phased versions of gilneas, southshore, barrens and ashenvale, or maybe some sort of gated content in the war progression in these zones....
I think that could make a damn good expansion, but maybe alot of people would complain about how there's no new zones....and that alone could shoot down the idea. It'd be a good alternative to watching zones stagnate, and people stand in the same spot until the next cataclysm? :)
Fluid zones, man... I think it's the future of MMORPGS

I'd love to see the war actually go somewhere other than "pointless new continent created for the purpose of containing the fighting for the next year or so."

Oh man, don't even get me started on Pandiarrhea. Sure it could be nice, but WHY are the horde and alliance are going there? "Oh, all my enemies went to Panda land, and I could just steamroll their abandoned territory?" "Naaah, let's chase them and mess up those panda people's lands by fighting a war there!"
They peg this as a game about warcraft, but from my perspective, every time they have a chance to show some war between the two factions, the jam it into a meaningless battleground, jam it into a poorly written book or comic and make us buy it separately, or jsut shy away from the idea at all.
I don't even remember formally joining the horde or alliance, every raid so far I've been a "Random Adventurer".... why can't I raid with Horde races? It's not like any raid was ever a faction specific endeavour.
