Layering a transmogrification look from the Darkmoon Faire
So maybe you don't want to wear one of the umpteen million tier sets or dungeon sets out there. You want to look different, unique, stand out in the crowd ... we get the picture. There's an art to putting together a transmogrified look without just picking up a labeled set, and it involves the careful use of layering. Check out the couple above, from poster fwerp on Reddit, who have taken layering and off-set pieces and turned out a couple of outfits that are sure to have them blending in with the Darkmoon Faire crowd.
What's shown above is a set of roleplay outfits -- note the lack of spaulders -- but all it takes is a little creativity to toss together a look just like it, one that you can transmogrify for your own use. These are both cloth sets, so casters, if you're looking for something other than the usual robe and glowing shoulders getup, take a peek after the break and see how you can put this together for yourself!

Outfit #1
-
Shirt Rich Purple Silk Shirt Tailoring

- Chest Eldr'naan Jerkin
- Belt Eldr'naan Belt
- Legs Eldr'naan Pants
- Boots Blood Waders Quest reward, Darkcloud Grimtotem, Thousand Needles
- Hat Green Tinted Goggles Engineering
- Shoulders Eldr'naan Shoulderpads
- Bracers Vital Bracelets
- Gloves Delaris' Gloves Quest reward, Break the Unbreakable, Felwood
- Staff Whelp Keeper's Staff Quest reward, Done Nothing Wrong, Burning Steppes
The purple and green flair of the Eldr'naan set is the highlight of this particular ensemble. The Eldr'naan set is a level 68 green set that is a random world drop -- so you'll want to farm in Outlands if you're looking for these particular pieces and keep an eye on the Auction House for any green pieces that may be up for sale.
The boots, staff, and gloves on the other hand can all be found via low-level questing as quest rewards. Cataclysm added a whole new selection of low-level quest reward items that are suitably fashionable for the Azerothian traveler. If you haven't done any of the old world quests, now would be an excellent time to do so. As a caster, you'll want to keep any nice-looking cloth gear that you happen to get from questing. With the addition of void storage, you should have plenty of space to store anything that manages to catch your eye.
And don't forget your local crafters -- the goggles pictured above are the Green Tinted Goggles created by engineers. Unlike many of the engineering items, these are not soulbound. They are, however, cloth gear. While casters can don these through transmogrification, other classes are out of luck.
Outfit #2
- Shirt Green Holiday Shirt Tailoring
-
Chest Willow Vest

- Belt Highborne Cord
- Legs Highborne Pants
- Boots Aerie Boots
- Hat Darkmist Wizard Hat
- Shoulders Feralfen Amice
- Bracers Eldr'naan Bracelets
- Gloves Mistyreed Gloves
- Staff Diviner Long Staff
The Diviner Long Staff may seem like an odd choice to cart around. It's hardly the size of a proper caster staff. But with its odd twists and curls, it's reminiscent of the eerie forests surrounding the Darkmoon Faire at its new and somewhat creepy location.
The key to both outfits shown is in something that a lot of players have forgotten about -- shirts! Tailors can craft a whole host of shirts in varying colors, perfect for layering under a tunic or vest. Check with your local tailors for shirt options, or for fancier fare, head to the Threads of Fate in Dalaran. Karandonna sells a variety of shirts and doublets for gold, and like any vendor in Dalaran, the higher your rep, the lower the prices.
Most casters out there are used to wearing robes by now, but transmogrification allows casters to dress in trousers and tops if they want to. You know what that means -- no more big blue dresses! If you've been dying to wear something other than a skirt, transmogrification makes it easy.

This was a very enjoyable read. I've been struggling with the correct look for some toons. I really dig t9 priest, and that's what I'm doing for him, but my mage has been searching the void for the correct garb. I'm gonna give this a try for sure. Thanks, Anne!!

I'm going with the Wrathful PvP gear for my mage. its kinda spooky looking. Mages dont tend to have the best looking gear.

Merciless for my mage, just love it.

I'm actually quite fond of the mage T13 set on my gnome. The white version from LFR specifically.
The rotating gears on the shoulders are pretty neat, but I've seen that they look pretty stupid on bigger races.

Yeah, I've put together a few outfits just by going to the auction house, choosing my armor type, listing the items from cheapest to most expensive, then using the preview function to see how they look. I made a couple of fairly nice looks for under 100 gold, combining stuff I already had with auction house randomness.

Interesting article! I wouldn't mind seeing more articles like this.

Not to be a sh*t-talker, but I've been underwhelmed at many of the transmog choices I've seen on my server. It seems like most went for the mis-matched clown suit, or a tier set with very little thought or creativity.
These Darkmoon look-alike sets are nice, by the way! My priest main is outfitted in an all-white ensemble with grey trimmings pieced together from various low-level greens that I started saving and buying from the AH back when transmogrification was first announced.
For my night-elf mage I found a crimson vest and pants combo that still needs some accessorizing, but he's going to look great!

It would be nice if instead of making you run old dungeons, they open up vintage shops in each city with different themed gear. You could purchase the items with gold, points, or whatever currency they deem worthy.

@ NoYou - I love that idea!

Usually about once a week, I come up with something halfway decent. The rest of the time I put out a lot of @%@$#%. Hey, your mature language filter is on!

I'm a transmog junkie and I also pieced together my own outfit. The easiest way to do it is to pick a set you like and then swap out some of the pieces for things you like more but that still match. Wow insider's addon spotlight talked about an addon called Mogit a while back. If you haven't tried it yet and you are struggling to piece together a nice outfit then I highly recommend it. I don't think I could transmog without it! And people stop and whisper me all the time about my transmog gear!

Transmorgy this, transmorg that - so BORING and tired of reading umpteen articles on this issue. Yes, having some itemization can be nice - but cripes, after a while, so sick and tired of seeing so many damned articles on this assinine little thing that really does absolutely nothing for gameplay.
And people commenting on having more hairstyles with the barber too - again, jeezus, have heard so much from this vocal minority.
I am a pet and mount collector myself (before anyone wants to argue how pets and mounts are not part of gameplay), and I agree that these items do not really add anything to gameplay either. It is nice to see new ones, I will collect what I can - but do not need (and really, there are one 1 or two, or more often none) many writeups each time one is added.
Nina Katarina Dec 22nd 2011 2:44PM
Um - plenty of people do read this, and it costs you nothing to scroll past it. It does plenty for gameplay. Just not for the gameplay YOU enjoy.
If you're not interested just skip it. I like the articles, I'll keep on reading them.
It's really nothing to get angry about.

Why did you bother commenting to this article if you have no interest in it? O_o
Oh, I know! It's because you're a troll looking for attention. Well, here's some attention for you. It's my Christmas gift to you.
So you better not pout, better not cry, better not shout, I'm telling you why...
Greatfather Winter is coming to town and is not going to bring you a Lumpy.
Noyou Dec 22nd 2011 3:04PM
Well chris you certainly are a dick and a bad troll. Now go away. You might wanna have a talk with whatever or whomever is forcing you to read these writeups.
Thander Dec 22nd 2011 3:34PM
Sorry, but transmog is awesome. There's just so many possibilities. It's not gameplay, but it adds so much more customization to the character. Blizzard may never add more customization to the character models, but at least we can customize our gear.

I don't pvp; but that doesn't mean I need to go and troll the blood sport column.
Harvoc Dec 22nd 2011 4:48PM
We see you trolling, we hating...
