re: Making gear for yourself - As with so many things, the key here is balance. My Priestess crafted herself a set of Netherweave Vestments at level 60, and the set bonus was still intact when she hit 70. It's probably not worth the money, however, to craft level 55 rares or 80 epics, nor would it be wise to craft and equip every upgrade as soon as it's available. As a general rule, I'd advise against self-crafting more than once for each type of cloth you encounter. That's about every ten levels, so you should be in a good position to decide which of your gear is outdated and what you'll keep wearing for a while. I also find that crafting as you go makes the cost more bearable; since you're using materials you've gathered, and the spending is spread out over several /days, it doesn't feel like as much of a hit as buying 2,000g worth of materials in one day.
