For the last few months I've been leveling a bunch of alts and trying to buy as few materials on the ah as possible just to see the disparity between the materials needed to level a crafting profession and the gathering needed to level a gathering profession. LW seems to be the worst (I have 2 skinners over 450 feeding a single LW and still in need of about 250 borean leather), but tailoring is frustrating. I've sent 7 toons through northrend and haven't quite gotten through frostweave. I haven't been going out of my way to farm cloth like I have with some of the gathering professions, though. Meanwhile, my scribe has leveled almost entirely on whatever has been left over from leveling an alchemist of each spec. For what it's worth, I think Enchanting should be the first profession you pick up. It generally makes leveling future professions cost-neutral if not a bit profitable and can be leveled by pretty much exclusively feeding it craftables from another profession and the greens that drop as you level. That's why it goes so great with tailoring: you can have both without worrying about a gathering skill.
