If I may-

The Iron Vrykul (and, indeed, all iron races) did not predate Loken's rebellion and are a relatively recent development. They were not the original, pre-flesh Vrykul; there were stone vrykul mentioned in the Shattering though they are never seen. that said, we also do not see non-iron vrykul assisting much of anyone. The Iron Vrykul assist Ignis because they're both working for Yogg-saron, it's an altogether unnatural alliance. We rarely see Vrykul interacting with other races but nothing implies they're assistants or defenders, considering we never see non-fleshy Vrykul. We have no idea what the original Vrykul did.
