I can't help but think Blizz intentionally removed Neptulon to allow Azshara her own "time in the spotlight" later on without us thinking "why doesn't Neptulon stomp her?". Of course, the question of where he went and what happened to him there is another source of content in itself. Resolving one story-thread at a time (and spin it out to other stories) helps this game stay alive.
