When looking back at TBCs Heroics, you have to remember that fewer people raided and Heroic content remained relevant for a long time for many players because it was the only content available, thus you didn't overgear it. Trust me, when you were wearing SSC/TK gear and above, it was a cake walk. However, is that to say Heroics haven't gotten easier? No, they definately have, but initially in Cata, Heroics were actually a challenge. Some even being harder than some of the TBC Heroics. The problem is threefold:1) More players are having the ability to overgear very quickly2) Content being nerfed while it is relevant3) Not enough difficulty options for dungeons. While I am looking forward to the Challenge Mode in MoP, I would prefer the current model to be re-evaluated. Something simple like;Levelling mode (level 80-84)Normal mode (level 85)Heroic mode (level 85 with gear normalisation)

Personally I saw three major problems with Cata Heroics (and the raids as well):A) They were damn long, even a near-perfect run of GB was at the very least a 90 minute affair, and even for people with the time to spend it was extremely draining. It didn't help that most people were used to the shorter Wrath heroics (even at 3.0/3.1).B) They were pretty unforgiving. Often little mistakes could mean a wipe (Ozruk anyone), and playing the "what the hell did we do wrong there" game every other boss certainly didn't make them much fun.C) Tying into point B, Healing was different and pretty difficult, and even the slightest upgrade in gear was probably much more crucial than it ought to have been. That being said, I personally (and I'm a very casual player) liked the difficulty of the older heroics, at least as opposed to the "just pull we'll be fine" feel to the new ones (though I certainly like the fact that they're short and fun). However, one of the biggest things I think Blizz should reconsider for MoP is not a new system of tiers for heroics/dungeons, but a more specific way to choose which daily heroic you want to do. When you had daily heroic quests in Wrath, it was easy for you to go "oh, the daily is VH, I can definitely do that one" or "today it's HoL, I probably can't manage that one, I should find a group for one I feel better on". Nowadays, you get one entirely at random, meaning if you have the time for a VP but not a GB, you're out of luck, or if you feel confident in trying heroic VP (one considered generally easier) but don't feel confident in GB (one much harder) then you're also out of luck. That was honestly one of the biggest factors that drove my guild crazy in 4.0, we'd all sit there in the queue praying to heaven we didn't get one we didn't feel that confident with/didn't have time for. Not only that, but with a pool of all the heroics, keeping track of and mastering 30-something different bosses and mechanics didn't do us any favors either.I'd much rather like to see a breaking up of the random choices (like they do now with all Cata Heroics vs. just the 4.1/4.3 ones) into "shorter vs. longer" and/or "easier vs. harder". You'd still be picking a random heroic from a group, just this way you wouldn't be stuck in a 2 hour wipefest that you didn't have time for anyway. It brings back the element of being able to pick and choose your battles if you need to from Wrath, but still keeps things fresh and random. I think a system like this would have remedied a lot of the problems people had with Cata heroics, without having to nerf them into oblivion or wait until people overgear them.

Regarding B) I'm in the camp where wiping is a means of learning. However, I do understand that in a pug environment, that's not always a given, especially when you look at what any new or returning players end up experiencing when they do a VP-Heroic with people that haven't stopped playing since Cata dropped. For them, I conceed that tough heroics can be a pain, but that's more to do with pug mentality than an issue with game difficulty.I like the idea of seperating dungeons into types. Short/Long/Gaunlet, although, just change some bosses into optional or manadatory between Normal and Heroic and you may achieve that goal. There's plenty of possible systems that can solve this unheroic Heroics issue, and I'm definately am interested in seeing how Challenge mode plays out. It'll be especially interesting to see if those fun dungeon achievements end up being in Challenge Mode only. I'm not sure Blizzard are brave enough at the moment.
