20 observations from a leveling tank

The following is a list of somewhat random observations I have collected after several expansions' worth of tanking for low-level groups.
1. Don't take shortcuts on trash packs. The time you save sneaking past one of them will be eliminated by the time you'll lose when someone blunders into them and dies.
2. Someone will almost always blunder into them and die.
3. Despite common complaints on the forums, the vast majority of players are actually really nice people who are perfectly willing to tolerate mistakes and the learning curve. The actual occurrence of true, unforgivable jackasses seems to be about one per five groups, although this depends on when you're queuing.
4. Two seconds are required for warrior tanks to apply Rend to one mob and then Thunder Clap it to the rest of the pack with Blood and Thunder. This is apparently one second too long.
5. If you pull like a ferret on meth and your group's constantly scrambling to keep up with you, you'll always have that precious second before they catch up.
6. Doing this if you're undergeared is a great way for your healers to hate you. By the way, they're right. How do you reconcile these competing directives? You can't!
7. The worst pull in 5-mans while leveling is the first trash pack in Auchenai Crypts. It can be pulled cleanly if the group is willing to cooperate and withholds DPS until you've gotten the caster(s) out of the next group's range. However, this has not happened to me since my main tanked the place during The Burning Crusade.
8. Actually, I would nominate Auchenai Crypts as the worst leveling dungeon for a tank. Uninspiring loot, mobs that spawn other mobs out of your reach requiring immediate attention before they take off for the rest of the group, only two bosses, and large trash pulls all add up to a fairly irritating experience.
9. Most problematic DPS while leveling: frost mages. The same stuff that keeps them alive while they're out questing -- slowing and freezing mobs -- is the same stuff that can make positioning mob packs safely a hassle. Runners-up: Moonkin and elemental shaman who get overexcited about Typhoon and Thunderstorm.
10. On that note, is it just me, or are pugged hunters a lot better on average than they used to be?
11. Players have grown used to the relative lack of mob incapacitates, disarms, and stuns in 5-mans from Wrath through Cataclysm. The presence of these mechanics in classic and BC dungeons tends to throw them for a loop.
12. Spending most of a pull stunned or disarmed while a DPS pulls aggro is not a good feeling. Being lectured by said DPS player for not doing your job is worse.
13. Reading a group's mood is tough, and the line between a group that thinks you're pulling too quickly and one that thinks you're pulling too slowly is more fragile than you'd think.
14. There is nothing worse than a player who has a tank of her own at level 85 and can't shut up about it.
15. The dungeon in which you are most likely to lose aggro is Hellfire Ramparts. This is before a host of new DPS death knights in gear that is usually better than yours realizes what Blood Presence does.
16. You can avoid a lot of potential trouble (although I don't exactly know why or how this works) by apologizing for a fairly inconsequential mistake early in the dungeon (for example, "I'm sorry about that, got stunned and couldn't taunt that mob off you"). Maybe it makes people feel more comfortable if someone's expressed respect for their time or the willingness to own up to a mistake, but it's very rare for me to have any problems with a group when it's happened.
17. Blackrock Depths is probably the single best dungeon that Blizzard has ever created, though I would also nominate Scholomance, Magisters' Terrace, and perhaps Halls of Reflection. However, it's a pretty complex experience with quests all over the place -- and players who want all of them -- plus an ill-defined set of bosses that will complete the dungeon's different stages. Don't queue between levels 50 and 58 unless you've got at least two hours on your hands, and kill all the things. Eventually, whatever completes the section of the dungeon you got will die.
18. Playing a druid tank has blinded me to how maddening it can be to get a decent shield as a warrior or paladin tank. I still haven't gotten the Extinct Turtle Shell from archaeology, although it wouldn't matter for the draenei warrior on a different server from my main.
19. One of the things that consistently shocks people new to tanking is how much you have to know about dungeons and mob mechanics and how invisible this knowledge is until you run into someone who doesn't have it. On that note, Maps for Tanks is a godsend.
20. Heirlooms are great if all you want is to get an alt to 85 as quickly as possible, but one of the nice things about playing without them is being able to look forward to what drops.

I'd add as a DK than DK's have no AE Taunt ability. We have ae abilities that generate aggro like Blood Boil or Death and decay but no actual ae taunt. This makes things especially painful when you've got multiple people blowing up multiple different mobs right away.

So far my Paladin Tank, now having just reached TBC content, has yet to encounter a death knight who didn't, for some inexplicable reason, spam death grip whenever possible
Even when already in melee range
I don't understand why anyone would do this, let alone five different people in a row (and the first just wandered around in blood presence too despite the entire group shouting at him)
David Whyld Jan 3rd 2012 6:52PM
I've had that as well. More times than I care to remember. I pull the mob and then instantly it's death gripped away from me by a death knight, who promptly dies, and then hits me with a barrage of "NOOB TANK L2P" because I didn't have aggro on it. You can't win with some people.

Death knights start with death grip on button two. This being the main button in the rotation for most folks, noob death knights invariably leave it where it is and press their row of buttons. Thus you get shiny new death knights fresh out of Acherus death gripping their way through Hellfire Ramparts with you. Feel free to enlighten them. ;)

"5. If you pull like a ferret on meth and your group's constantly scrambling to keep up with you, you'll always have that precious second before they catch up."
But I don't want to 'pull like a ferret on meth'. I want to have fun, I want to finish quests... sometimes finishing quests involves actually looting things. I don't understand why nobody loots things anymore...
Enkylanos Jan 3rd 2012 6:46PM
Looting things takes time, and if you're taking time, you're not pulling like a ferret on meth. If you're not pulling like a methed-up ferret, some friendly DPS (it only takes 1/3 for this to happen) has taken it upon himself to pull the next group.
Ergo, no tank loots because they need to beat DPS to the next pack, heals can't loot because they need to keep up with the tank, and DPS can't loot because they need to try to catch the tank on the damage meters.
TLDR: Get most DPS to keep it in their pants for the first 2 seconds of a pull and looting will return in some cases.

Overall, I've been pleasantly surprised at how well tanking low level dungeons has gone. Some bad groups along the way but most of the time you find yourself running with people who actually know a thing or two about their class and don't ninja pull, ninja loot or just plain ninja.
But then, of course, you get the few exceptions who make even the shortest, easiest dungeon a chore:
The Ninja Puller: absolutely has to pull every single time. Tank dead? Pull! Healer in the toilet? Pull! See that group of mobs standing over there that we were going to skip? Pull! Even better, wait till we engage the boss then pull!
The Go Go Goer: if you're in the dungeon for more than 3 seconds and haven't pulled something, the Go Go Goer is there with "GO GO GO FFS NOOB TANK PULL!!!!!!!" Think you might want to loot the boss after killing it? Think again. The Go Go Goer thinks that's taking too long. Just pray you don't start lagging or the Go Go Goer will fill your screen up with long rows of "GO GO GO GO GO GO" until you get the message.
The Ninja Looter: "Rogue, why did you just roll need on that shield?" "Shut it, idiot! it matches the staff I got in the last dungeon!"
The AFK'er: hmmm... why does the mage have a DPS score of zero on Recount? Ah, he's been AFK eating his dinner for the last 20 minutes and has the healer on follow.

#17 Seriously!?
BRD is the single WORST dungeon ever implemented, and every time it pops, you know you'll get a tank who wants to spend hours killing EVERYTHING in sight when all you want to do is kill the one boss required by the dungeon finder.
Possum Jan 4th 2012 3:50AM
Oh go back to Trial of the Crusader.
Katherine Jan 4th 2012 4:22PM
Sorry mate, half the bosses are on the way to the last boss, and some are even IN the way. Now what about the time that we had UBRS according to the dungeon finder and the tank wanted to do LBRS and complained that I was still at the entrance discussing it rather than following him going the wrong way and healing him.

I've tanked and healed all kinds of dungeons and 6 is the one I sympathetically groan with the most. However, if a tank and healer cooperate then a lot of dps-induced headaches can be mitigated. If they don't . . . I recently ran Dire Maul on my lowbie disc priest. The tank kept running and pulling when I was out of range. He also never stayed till a mob was dead, just nearly dead and then run on. I was stuck sometimes between the tank and dps both with mobs attacking them and running between them like an idiot trying to keep them both up. I asked several times if he would slow down and got no response. He died as I didn't manage to get in range quickly enough the last time, got a screen full of abuse before he quit group.
I'm not saying I've never screwed up and pulled when tanking when the healer was elsewhere. I've also been guilty of spacing out on occasion as a healer and not keeping up how I should. If I do so though I admit it and rededicate myself to concentrating. I really don't understand why people can't just be calm about it and communicate better.

Been a while since I tanked, but experienced number 1 and 2 when i tried it again yesterday xD
MikeMachine Jan 3rd 2012 7:32PM
I just leveled my first tank, mainly because there was a lack of quality tanks when I was trying to level another healer/dps so I said screw it I'll make a tank. Some things I noticed.
1. All ranged classes except shaman and moonkin open up to early for warriors.
2. DKs still don't realize that its good to deathgrip a mob running loose but bad to deathgrip out of my aggro.
3. 25% of Ret pallys don't understand what Righteous Fury does, nor spell it correctly in /p chat.
4. Healers that talk about being new are usually the best because they pay more attention.
5. Vanilla Stratholme is the worst place for maintaining aggro, thankfully the mobs tend to be just weak enough that it's ok to give DPS some slack.
6. If a healer begins to DPS, make sure last-stand is off cool down.
Katherine Jan 4th 2012 4:26PM
Righteous Furry. What?
Blayze Jan 3rd 2012 7:46PM
Isn't Crypts also the place with the bridge you can be knocked off by the spawning adds with the knockback?
Makes me glad for Overload on my Inquisitor, as long as stuff's not immune to physics...

I have wanted to become a versatile wow player. I've played dps and I play mainly as a healer. I've wanted to get into tanking but the thought of controlling so much and having to know everythign about everything has kind of thrown me out of doing it. Maps for tanks sounds like a great idea to help out everyone actually, not just tanks!
karatesmashunhurt Jan 4th 2012 9:26AM
I think it's gotten easier since the buff to tank aggro generation. I agree with (almost) all of what Allison wrote (tastes in dungeons are bound to vary) - but especially the part about most groups being nice and willing to forgive mistakes.
If you're really worried then try levelling as a tank and kit your toon out in looms, you're ridiculously overpowered if you've got a full set. With that kind of advantage you can still make mistakes, but it's a lot easier to recover from them.
rodmin Jan 3rd 2012 8:38PM
Sigh, DPS still aggro things over when we tank.
When that happens, i let them die most of the time (i talk with the healer before the dungeon about this though).
The only time in which i taunt them back is if i see an "ops, sorry" or similar.
Also, three things:
1 - Most of the times healers do not talk about the healing being rough or not. This can be unpleasant if you're pushing big packs and they're not talking anything (unless a DPS pulled, watch your healer's mana before a big pull)
2 - the majority of negative things in the thread make me believe that this post was written a bit based on anger towards PuGs after a fairly recent spoiled game session, which is understandable.
3 - Is it just me, or did you came up intentionally with the pig-tail girl comparison to match up with your pic?
Killik Jan 4th 2012 5:08AM
Yeah, it's a good idea to talk with the healer privately - ones I've met have a habit of blowing a whole mana bar trying to save stupid dps. I guess they are too nice for their own good! :)

While you mentioned incapacitates and wrote a good article overall, I wish someone would write something or mention to new players about how to handle Mind Control.
This is the number one thing that I have yet to see an entire group know how to handle it.
I have seen the whole group kill the Tank , I have seen them all Kill the Healer. I have seen the Tank kill the Healer and seen an endless variety of insanity when someone gets mind controlled. Everyones eyes light up and they pounce. I wind up sounding like a lunatic trying to tell them what to do and not know ing who has what spell to CC or not etc. I usually lay into them pretty hard core especially when I am the healer and they all kill me. then I watch them wipe as I humiliate them in chat about what you gonna do now etc.
Anyway its a good point for a topic such as this.
