Breakfast Topic: How do you decide which is your main?

When Cata hit, she was my first 85, and for a short while she was my only 85. I've PvPed on her as retribution (and as protection for a while, but the less said about that the better!). But since then, as I've become ever more PvP-focused, the amount of time I spend tanking has dwindled considerably. I still do it, and I still enjoy it, especially when it's really challenging, which it seems to me is sadly less and less the case for tanks right now. But the thing is, PvE is just not as exciting to me as PvP. So the character that's getting the most play is my shaman, by a pretty long way. My priest and my warlock are next in line -- and heck, even my hunter gets more playtime than my paladin these days!
And yet when someone asks me what my main is, I'll still say "paladin tank." Maybe it's because I spent such a long time getting to know her. I was too nervous to level by tanking when I first started, so the leveling process took forever. Maybe it's because I like to surprise people by saying I play a tank (see a previous Breakfast Topic for why I think they might be surprised). Maybe it's just because she was my first.
But I think the idea of a main could be something quite significant in WoW. It's how you identify yourself. It's your positioning and your role in the big machine, and it's who you feel you are online. Possibly.
So how about you? What is your main? How do you decide? Do you simply tell people that it's the character you play the most right now? Has your main changed, and if so, why? What's your WoW identity?
My name's Olivia, and I'm a paladin tank. Honest.

My main is will the first toon I made. Bliss would have to extremely change warlocks before Id ever switch. 11,000+ Achievement points are hard to walk away from.

I've several alts whom I've attempted to convert into my main - a balance druid, a mage, a hunter, even a rogue. In fact, I have the most fun leveling and playing my lvl 85 gnome engineer frost/arcane mage. But, thru all the nerfs, frustrations, disappointments, I keep going back to the first character I got to max level.
My name is Kutitap and I'm a desto warlock.

My main is an 85 enhance shaman and my only toon over level forty. I've tried leveling lots of other classes, I have alts at various levels and I've tried restoration and elemental builds, but I keep coming back to my enh. shammy with the awesomeness that is dual wielding and puppies.

I don't have one. I started playing just over a year ago, and my three highest characters are my L70 Human Fire/Arcane Mage, L63 Human Fury Warrior and L66 Dwarven Shadow Priest. I'm also fond of my L44 Blood Elf Subtlety Rogue but losing interest in my L50 Human Retro Paladin. (Also a Dranei Shaman, a Tauren Druid and a Worgen Warrior).
I'm still figuring out what kind of DPS I want to be. So far, the answer seems to be everything except demon/death/pet classes.

I rolled quite a few toons before I finally leveled one to 85 (my feral kitty). Then, as an almost joke, I rolled an enhancement shaman (tried elemental as my second toon but was too much of a noob at the time to play it correctly) and I completely fell in love. I think it was with my shammy that I got serious about learning my class and playing the game. I still have a few faults I need to work out, but I feel like my shammy and I have similar personalities. I think I connected with my druid well because of the diversity and adaptability the class has that I share.
But, in all honesty, while shammy's can't fill all three dungeon roles, I feel like he's more adaptable to situations than my druid. If the healer dies, I can do a decent job keeping everyone alive for the fight by using greater healing wave on my Maelstrom 5 stacks. If the tank dies, I just put on rockbiter weapon and UE if I lose aggro. If something needs kited and there's no ranged in the group, I can do this easily. And I can make up for any lack of damage in the group cause my output is pretty good. Switching forms with druids is too inconvenient for me. So, I guess my shaman's my main because I connect with the playstyle more. He's also the one I farm with, keep all the gold on, hunt achiebements, etc.

My main is Evlyxx, a priest.
Evlyxx was my first character, my first to 60, my first to raid, my first to everything including my blog @ www.evlyxx.co.uk.
My playtime on her now is limited to valor capping each week and raiding and I play my alts more but once Panda time comes Evlyxx will be first to 90 and first to gear up to raid standard. Only once raiding and all non raiding gear options are exhausted will the alts be let loose for anything other than profession levelling.
My name is Evlyxx and I am a priest.

My Paladin was the 2nd toon i got to 85, after my DK. He was my main throughout wotlk. I faction changed him twice. My paladin was my main going into wrath. Starting FL.
Until i found the joys of the Spriest.
My name is Seraphy and im a former Paladin tank/converted Shadow Priest.

My main is a healing priest and has been since Vanilla. She wasn't my first character made, but once I started playing a priest, I knew I'd found my favorite class. I play her the most and have the most time invested into her with achievements and whatnot so it's not difficult to claim her as my main.

My Druid will always have my WoW-heart. The first char to hit the consecutive level caps. My Deathknight has seen a lot more of Cata though since I seem to suck at positional dps (You need to be behind your target to do that) and Boomkin's Eclipse mechanic isn't "jiving" with me.
Next xpack I'll be leveling Boomkin/Resto instead of Cat/Bear again.

My main is a destro lock. I know the other specs are better dps wise but I love the way the class plays. He didn't even hit 80 before my dk (thanks old zul gurub for making me make a tank for
Mount runs).
He is and always will be my best toon. I have a priest healer, dk and I'm levelling a tankadin but they just don't work for me the way my lock does.
