Raid Finder loot rules changing in patch 4.3.2

Coming up in patch 4.3.2, it will no longer be possible to win two of the same item from the same boss. New loot rules coming so quickly seems to be indicative of Blizzard's position on the Raid Finder and its rules -- fluidity is a good thing. With the Raid Finder, more people are seeing raid content then ever, and these players need a different set of rules and a varied approach opposed to classic raiding. As time goes on, you'll be sure to see more tuning to the Raid Finder rules. Hit the jump for the full post.
Zarhym says Raid Finder loot rules will change in 4.3.2
We know this information. The item designers have plenty of spreadsheets too. If you're saying creating said spreadsheet takes an equivalent amount of time as coding a system in the game whereby item distribution accounts for the spec you're fulfilling in a dungeon, you're wrong.

Quote:
If you are DPSing you get the need bonus on (your) DPS gear. Tanks on tank gear. Healers on healer gear. A little common sense with things like bears and spriests on their slightly different needs and all of a sudden the loot issues where everyone needs everything are all fixed.
Then a little common sense when there are two of an item, you treat it as any guild would, you roll and the top two get it. Not treat each piece separately.
It should have been completely obvious that everyone would need on everything they could regardless of whether they need it as your getting 20G for that shiny new weapon is much better for you than the person stuck with an i353 weapon getting a much hoped for upgrade because you will never see them again.
Blizzard fixed frost orbs from being needable soon after LFD launched. They fixed needing on BoEs in 5 mans. Why on earth didn't they fix LFR loot when it was glaringly obvious that the current LFR loot tags would not be sufficient?
New loot systems must be so depressing for GC and crew. Every time a new one comes out they must be so hopeful that their customers will all be pulling together. I wonder if they have a shrink on call each time a new one launches when they get reminded, yet again, about simple game theory, and the fact that in a group of strangers each person will do what is best for them.

We're not that naive. We knew from the start of designing the Raid Finder system that we'd need to build a smarter loot distribution system to regulate fair play. It was also really important to us to get Raid Finder working and implemented with the Dragon Soul raid. We had to be realists about it.
The loot system will be improved in upcoming updates -- including in patch 4.3.2, where it'll no longer be possible to win two of the same item for a single boss kill. But we're really happy with the implementation of Raid Finder and feel it's a great new feature for the game, and one we'll continue refining over time.

Now, a resto tree now... I suck at life...
loop_not_defined Jan 5th 2012 4:18PM
This could only happen if the [Holy] Paladin was in a DPS slot. If they were a healer, then either this was a bug or you got your facts wrong.
Ilmyrn Jan 5th 2012 4:25PM
Well that was his problem. Everyone knows Resto Paladins suck. He should have specced Shadow or Balance.
Bapo Jan 5th 2012 4:26PM
While I don't agree with what that pally did, few things.
First its HOLY not resto. Resto is for those tree hugging hippies and shammies :P
Second, your definition of "pure melee dps" is horribly off, since ret pallys, warriors, and dks are hybrids. (Warriors are tanks as well, so not "pure")
Third, if you notice they were afk an entire fight, vote to kick them, and let the raid know. I've been in several lfrs now where we have booted people who were afk for several fights, or were doing so poorly they should not have been in there at all (we had a blood dk tank with holy pally gear -_-). I've also been in other groups where yes, the afker ended up winning stuff. It sucks, do what you can to prevent it.

He must have been a REsTo paladin.
vlad_dracul2k2002 Jan 5th 2012 4:56PM
Do you mean a HOLY paladin? 'cuz I've never heard of a RESTO paladin. In addition, how do you know he didn't need it for a DPS spec? I'll acknowledge that he should've asked if he could 'Need' on off-spec items.
In addition, how do you know he/she wasn't having issues staying connected? My sisters and I have that issue sometimes.

Actually, this can and does happen regularly without the healer being in a dps slot. I've noticed that if you queue for multiple roles (say tank and dps) that you get the role bonus on both sets of gear regardless of which spec you're actually fulfilling. I honestly don't need any of the gear since I'm never going to see a regular 10m Dragon Soul raid, so I only roll need on the stuff I have.
And by all means, if some guy was AFK, dead, or underperforming and you didn't kick him, then that blame partly falls on you as well. Ignoring the bad folks just encourages them to do it again.

Only time I saw that drop, a hunter needed and won it...good times
loop_not_defined Jan 5th 2012 5:32PM
Broken-toes, I take it that was before the class restrictions were implemented? Sucks. :(
RogueJedi86 Jan 5th 2012 6:01PM
Funny how he was AFK/Disconnected during the fights, but when it came time to roll on gear, he was completely there. Sounds like a freeloader. Probably should've kicked him earlier, but hindsight is 20/20 yeah?

Ultimately, LFR was implemented for DS as a trial run. None of the gear we get at this stage will matter once MoP launches and we all go through a mad scramble to gain the next five levels.
Blizzard will continue to analyze and refine roll mechanics up to the MoP launch when at that point things will hopefully be "Working at Intended".
Broken-toes Jan 5th 2012 5:25PM
True, but MoP is more than likely a good 6 months away, in that time we will be fighting Halion mkII. They really need to get it sorted, I really don't want to be throwin myself at a crap half arsed raid boss then have a hunter steal my loots.
Pyromelter Jan 5th 2012 7:07PM
All the more reason blizzard gets +1 for taking the time to implement loot changes now, instead of waiting for the new big shiny in 6 months.
dodio359 Jan 5th 2012 4:16PM
snark factor 9 captain!
loop_not_defined Jan 5th 2012 4:21PM
Friendly reminder that loot rolls will identify characters by Spec, not just Role, when Mists of Pandaria launches. Example: Elemental Shaman and Enhancement Shaman will not get +100 on the same DPS gear after 5.0 launches. Only one or the other.
SamLowry Jan 7th 2012 9:43AM
Yay, and that will come how many months from now?
LFR is tearing the playerbase apart right now, and this one minor tweak is like putting a Band-Aid on a sucking chest wound. The looting system needs many more fixes NOW, because in the 6-8 months it takes for Panda to finally drop you'll see even more sub drops entirely because of this issue.
And yet the devs don't have a good track record on obvious fixes. Remember how long it took them to make frozen orbs greed-only? Jeez, what a debacle that was.
naughtyzoot Jan 5th 2012 4:21PM
Not allowing people to need on items they already possess so they can "possibly trade" it later in the LFR run for something else they lose on needs to be eliminated ASAP. It's getting ridiculous.
I'm glad they're getting rid of the ability for the same person to win both tokens dropped at least, but more is definitely needed.
kingoomieiii Jan 5th 2012 4:28PM
Oh, people needing on bargaining chips need to be BANNED.
Bapo Jan 5th 2012 4:29PM
Try having a person in almost all 397 gear needing on everything they can in lfr, in hopes of getting the final piece they need, and if it doesn't drop, most of the time they'll take the loot they got and vendor it. I hate that crap so much. : /
somethinglurks Jan 5th 2012 4:31PM
So what happens to the dual-wielding rogues, frost death knights, single-minded fury warriors and enhancement shamans who generally wear two of the same weapon? Does this mean you don't want me, as an enh shaman using one No'Kaled, the Elements of Death (http://www.wowhead.com/item=78481/nokaled-the-elements-of-death) rolling on another for my off-hand? There's no way to regulate it that much without pissing off another group of people.
