Addon Spotlight: Glance, a multi-use top bar

Keeping your interface neat and tidy while still retaining a lot of your precious information can be a tough feat. Some poor souls never get away from a disaster UI, started and finished in sadness, shame, and wreckage. Do not fret, young ones. There are addons that can help you be neat and tidy without too much work on your part. I promise.
Glance was an addon that I first discovered while trolling through the comments on my various columns, as am I known to do. My readers are a steadfast bunch, always willing to show support for their man and recommend some great tools to players in need. Well, as it turns out, I am one of those players in need. A few weeks back, I got an email that asked me what was an easy way to get into LDB bars and addons, and I didn't really have a great answer. The first thing that popped into my head was the concept -- the bar addon works as a dock for other LDB plugins. It didn't feel right explaining the whole thing in that way, so instead I went looking for an addon that resembled LDB but didn't take the setup some LDBs require. That addon is Glance.
At a Glance
Glance works as an LDB bar-type, FuBar-esque information display that hangs out at the top of your screen. Everything is included without having to go out and find the separate modules and plugins. The downside to having everything included is that it's not going to get added on to -- the thing comes as is. That downside turns out to be an upside for many people who just want this specific set of features -- and it's a pretty robust feature set.
Modular addons are still my favorite type of addon because you can turn on and off pieces of the addon to save on CPU and memory usage, if you care about that sort of thing. One of the menus allows you to check or uncheck the modules you want to have active. The customization options allow you to scale the top bar, create mount and pet lists so you can summon a specific set of pets and mounts, auto-repair without a separate addon, and even view some party member stats as well.

Glance features a multitude of modules and plugins that can show you a variety of information and options to quickly summon a pet or mount, check your daily experience or gold gains, look through a better friends list, and more. The Glance bar also features a repair percentage indicator, lag in milliseconds display, framerate number, and addon memory usage monitor, especially helpful for players looking to track their addon usage stats to find troublemakers. You can also check out the clock that shows you server time, which helps you make those raid times.
For those of you who are still engaged in world PvP, Glance also features a Wintergrasp and Tol Barad timer, making sure you never miss a Battleground. You can also check out your professions from a drop-down as well, freeing up some of your action bars. If you're using the default user interface with the player and target frames at the top left-hand corner of the screen, Glance can move your frames down just a bit in order to make room for itself. I love the fact that little ol' Glance makes a little bit of wiggle room for itself.
Macros and commands
There are some macros associated with Glance that let you control some of the features that the addon works with. You can make a macro for /glance random, which summons a random mount for whatever specific area you are in. Flyable areas will get a flying mount, etc. /glance randomair, randomland, and randomwater also all work for summoning those specific types of mounts.
You can hide or show Glance with a simple /glance hide or /glance show, respectively. Options are located through the interface menu or by typing /glance options. I really appreciate addons that are light on customization needs but still find a way to make the customization options they offer well thought-out and easy to use.
If you're looking for a lighter solution to LibDataBroker or FuBar and can deal with less customization and fewer modules, Glance is a great addon for what it does. I like how easy the addon is to use out of the box, and it looks nice and has good scaling options. Suffice to say, I like it.

Addon mailbag tiiiiiime ...

Mat - First off, I have been an avid reader for a few years. Addon Spotlight is one of the few posts I read even during long breaks from WoW.Thanks for the email. Yes, there are lighter-weight alternatives to most raiding addons out there. Skada is less resource-intensive than Recount because of the modular nature of the data collection. Just turn off the bits that you don't want to run or care about and you'll save plenty of CPU power. In fact, what you're going to want to do is get an addon that monitors the CPU/memory performance of your addons and find out which ones are your troublemakers in raids. Today's addon on Addon Spotlight can do just that, by coincidence!
Now, I have an article idea, bear with me:
I run WoW on a computer with a gimpy video card, Raiding has always been a FPS killer, and the LFR is the worst of all. I love my addons, but I have to turn some off, and lower my video setting when I want to run LFR.
Are there some smallr, lite weight alternatives to the ubiquitous raiding addons? (Recount is a resource HOG!)
As for some alternatives, Skada is a good damage meter, and BigWigs runs a little lighter for many people than the ubiquitous DeadlyBossMods. You may have some success with BigWigs, and maybe the commenters can help us out and suggest some more alternatives for addons for older video cards. There will be a longer Addon Spotlight devoted to the subject in the future, closer to Mists of Pandaria.
See you all next week.

Any chance we can get a screenshot of the whole screen? Im having a hard time visualizing where it would go. : /
TimR Jan 12th 2012 4:35PM
It's a narrow band that runs along the entire top of your screen.
Windswept Jan 12th 2012 3:14PM
Reminds me of the bar at the top of Ultima Online with all the reagents and such.

Im looking for a way to make my map disappear when I'm in combat to help free up some screen real-estate.
Currently, I'm using sexymap, and if possible would like to continue to use it, but I would really like to make the map vanish when entering combat like my chocolate bar does.
Any suggestions?
Ozzard Jan 12th 2012 3:37PM
Larger chocolate bars so that they take longer to vanish and you don't mind the minimap?
aelders5124 Jan 12th 2012 4:31PM
Try Kong UI Hider i think it's called. You can set it to different opacities (real word?) For combat, no combat, no combat plus target, etc
Jahbootie Jan 12th 2012 4:48PM
One alternative is to turn on the Fader in Sexymap and then set the Normal Opacity to 0% and the Hover Opacity to 100%. You will want to set all of the buttons to display "On hover" as well.
This will turn the map (and the buttons) transparent by default; they will re-appear when you hover your mouse over the map location on your screen. Only flaw is that selected items (target, focus) will still be displayed unless you turn that function off in the main WoW options.
Not a perfect solution but since I only need/use the map once in a great while, it works for me.
I suppose you could also get Minimap Button Frame and set the opacity in Sexymap to 0% in all cases (there may even be an addon out there that just turns off the Minimap completely.) Use Button Frame access buttons when you need them, use the main map to see where you are, when you need that, and do without a Minimap completely.

Just realized you can turn off the tracking of Target and Focus - click the Tracking button on the Minimap and de-select those options. doh!

Honestly, I think just ditching Recount is one of the best things you can do for your in-game mental health. I run 5-mans and LFR, and the fact of the matter is, as long as the bosses are dying, it doesn't matter who's top of the heap on the charts.
I understand that the competition of the DPS race is a motivator for a lot of people, but if you're there for the experience, the gear, and the story, I think you can safely toss it as I have, particularly if you're a healer or tank (as I am). I have a DPS as well, but it's a mix of 378/384 gear, so I know even at my best I'm only going to be in the middle of the chart.
I say: Reject out recount, oust Omen and slay Skada!
Bapo Jan 12th 2012 4:04PM
I agree with your comment about Recount. I have a guildy who refuses to dps because she'd be at the bottom of the charts, and thinks she would be kicked out. (it has happened before), and I keep telling her that as long as stuff dies in a timely manner, we're fine.
I would also say keep some sort of threat meter at the least though.
Dragonrose Jan 12th 2012 5:02PM
Skada also functions as a threat meter. I personally have it set to show my threat in combat and dps for last fight out of it.
harr01 Jan 12th 2012 9:25PM
No, I use recount not to see if I beat everyone. But to see if everyone is doing their job properly, especially me. I have a lot of alts and need to know if I'm doing things correctly. I tried turning it off for a while but had no idea if I was doing enough dps ('enough' as defined by me).
There's been a number of times on certain toons where, if it wasn't for Recount, I would've never gone and read up on my priority 'rotation' or spec, and therefore never improve.
On the other side, I also find it useful to know if someone is doing less than 8-9k in a new Twilight dungeon. This gimps the whole grp and shows that the person isn't trying at all.
That said, spamming Recount in party chat unasked is a douchebag move.
harr01 Jan 13th 2012 10:40PM
You don't need Omen anymore. At all.
Dennis Jan 13th 2012 2:59PM
My question about damage meters is why Recount and Skada are always mentioned but Recap is skipped? I find that after grouping with another player of the same class, I'm able to compare their dps on each specific ability with mine. Using this I've been able to improve my own dps on my various alts. I've tried Recount because it was always the popular meter to use, but it just seemed clunky sending me back to Recap. Is there a reason that it's ignored? Is it a baby seal killer???

I've been using Titan Panel for ... years now, really, and have never been able to play without it. I think I might just say goodbye to it now and take this addon!
Pryn Jan 12th 2012 5:07PM
I love titan panel too, been looking at this and wondering similar, is it worth changing over or is it just another variety of the same thing?
exogenesis. Jan 12th 2012 5:52PM
I've just changed over, and I can safely say it's fantastic. Shows everything Titan Panel has ever shown, and so, so much more. My only qualm is that you can't customise it with fonts, centre text, changing the order of the modules, etc. But it's definitely worth making the switch.

Anyone know if there's an addon that will automatically output something to /party when you join an LFD group? I like to let people know that I'm on my laptop while I look after my grandfather and may have to drop group unexpectedly, and I've got a macro for it, but sometimes I forget to hit it at the beginning of a run.

Ive been trying to get shadowed unit frames to work and i need help. Is the any way to show the percentage of threat i have on the target (like with the default ui) and any way to get the target frame to light up so it tell me if i have the most aggro (also like in the default ui)? these features are extreme important as tank. Please help
ahsanali Jan 12th 2012 6:22PM
Use tidy plates + threat plates instead. Way more useful for tanking and they work for keeping an eye on multiple mobs too. Can't tank without them now!
