As more and more tanks get all the gear they need from the new 5 mans, they will start rolling greed on the tank gear that drops. At that point, there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking the group if you could roll need for your off-spec.

When tank loot drops, just wait and see what the tank rolls. If he rolls need, let him have it. If he rolls greed, go ahead and ask if you can have it.

Despite some of the horror stories, most groups are actually really cool about that stuff, as long as you ask.
