Breakfast Topic: Have you ever caused loot drama?
Drama often happens when someone wins a roll and hands it over to a significant other, against stated loot rules. Have you ever done that? Is it just a token of affection? Or was there a threat of personal repercussions if the transfer wasn't made?
Have you ever let a PUG or someone of lower rank in the guild roll on an item and then made up a rule on the fly if you don't like the outcome? Have you made a loot decision based solely on how much or little you liked the player? Have you rolled need on something you didn't need specifically to grief your group? Have you ever ninjaed an item and then quit the group?
I find the rationale behind questionable behavior fascinating. Is it nepotism or favoritism? Do you do it out of spite? Is there revenge involved; did someone do something bad in-game to you and you go for the eye for an eye philosophy? Did circumstances outside of the game make you act out by being unfair about loot in game? Are you just a funsucker who enjoys griefing?
I accidentally caused loot drama by rolling need on something I shouldn't have -- way back before you could trade BoPs within the group. While playing a gnome warrior I somehow didn't notice all of the int on the pretty blue ring. I still feel bad about winning that. But I didn't do it on purpose so my motivation was more "Oops!" than "Muhahahaha."
Now we all have had bad loot events happen to us and we've heard the stories. That's not what I'm asking. I want to hear the other side of the story.
If you have done anything shady that is loot-related, what did you do and why did you do it?

The RNG G-ds have been kind to you. My luck hasn't been that good. I didn't get anything I needed from ICC until after I start Cata content. I've done many Stonecore and haven't won a need yet. I've gotten nice stuff from trash, but it was all vendor trash though. :)
Congrats though. May the RNG be continually kind to you. :)

Same. The tank even threatened to kick me from the group if I didn't trade / sell it to him. I didn't :)

How is that loot drama? You won a nice drake, gratz :) Why would someone kick you from group, because you won a mount?

When I was a nooby levelling druid, I once needed on an ax which had the perfect stats for me, without remembering that I couldn't equip axes. Much name-calling ensued, and when I realised what I'd done I apologised and handed over the item. I still blush when I think about it!

When I was a n00b, someone invited me to a Scarlet Monastery run. Things went surprisingly well, and he said he wanted the staff at the end of the instance. I thought he meant the very end, not the end of the armory, and I thought there was more. I still feel bad about taking the staff.

No, but I've caused serious friction in the past by refusing to give in to loot demands.

I was doing a heroic in a new guild. I had leveled to 80 without ever grouping with other people for an instance (really) and was a complete noob at the whole need/greed system. I needed on a frozen orb and, understandably, drama ensued. I put the orb in the guild bank and everything worked out okay. Still. Yes.

I've ruthlessly (but not obscenely) harangued people who have rolled need on loot that isn't proper for their class or spec when there were others there who clearly needed the loot. Hunters rolling on int gear while leveling, tanks rolling on DPS plate, warrior and paladin tanks rolling on 2H, etc. Yes, they can use them, yes, it's okay to gear up your offspec while running in another role, but NOT when there are people in the group who need the loot for their current role NOW.
So, if you do that in a group I'm in, you're going to get shamed. Relentlessly. Until you leave the group. Because that sort of bullshyte is not called for, ever. Wouldn't do it in a group with your guildmates? Don't do it with a group of strangers.
Vincentmagius Jan 13th 2012 12:59PM
What if you would do it with your guildmates and friends?
I've never had guildmates or friends that cared. Unless we're going for something specific, we go with an upgrade is an upgrade as long as you have the specs. We might do swaps or trades later, but that's between us.
I know it's a frowned upon position here and I'll get downvoted, but LFD rules are currently NbG. By demanding Main spec after loot drops, YOU are changing the rules mid run. That would make YOU the scammer and ninja.
You can argue the loot rules should be one way or another. Both are equally fair and unfair. But attacking someone for a fair roll is out of line. You are bullying someone who won the roll fair and square because they don't fall within your "perfect world". What if that was some small kid on the other end? Do you feel like a big man now that you just forced some poor kid to hand over an item? Do you want their lunch money too?
The real question is would you yell and berate someone in real life because they took the last cookie? More will come if you try back later.

Right - so it's perfectly acceptable when a hunter rolls need and wins a tanking trinket at the same time a tank is rolling? Or a tank asks if anyone needs a dps piece that drops, the rolls need and wins anyway after someone says they do need the piece? Not in my book.
Looks like I'm the one who's been downvoted, laughably. Well, you can say it's a fair roll, but that doesn't mean it's a socially acceptable thing to do. I would be amazed though if you would really effectively ninja items your own guildies might need, and if that's true, thank god I'm not in your guild. And anyone old enough to run endgame heroics at this point is old enough to know better.

I won 2 hands tokens on my mage in a raidfinder run, the second week Dragon Soul was out, without realizing that I already had tier hands on that character. I figured it out as soon as they landed in my inventory. I probably should have scrolled back, figured out who was second on each roll, and handed them over, but I didn't want to deal with that. So I asked in raid chat for people to roll for the tokens, and handed them over to the winners of those rolls.
A rogue took exception to me not handing him one of the tokens (he'd been second on both system rolls, rolled low on the /roll), and proceeded to misdirect to me, on cooldown, in all succeeding fights.
Luckily the tanks were on the ball and I have a quick finger for invis/ice block, but it was quite annoying.
BadAndyMk3 Jan 13th 2012 9:11AM
I'd have done the same thing as the rogue. He didn't get the token because 1. YOU screwed up, 2. YOU were to lazy to scroll up and see who should have got it, and 3. even when you found out he should have won, YOU decided to be a jerk and just make everyone roll off for the tokens.
People liek you are why we need BLiz to mandate strict LFR loot rules.
wow Jan 13th 2012 9:12AM
I'm surprised you guys didn't Vote Kick the Rogue. Glad things worked out though, for the most part. :)

All kidding aside though, I was in a similar situation, but I had won all the need roles in a run and the "Loot Master" (even after stating the rules in the beginning) still gave the items to the guildies running the instance with him. I was just a single little PuG. hehe.
I even took it to a GM and sent screen shots, but they didn't or couldn't do anything about it. I almost quit the game due to this and that kept me from running dungeons/raids for a long time as well as dealing with the asshats and Elitist Jerks (not to be confused with the cool website).
I did run the instance again and actually got the item drop and won again, and was given the item (this was a group made up of all PuGs.) This run was one of the best I've ever been a part of. :)

@ Bad
Since the rogue rolled when Nina asked for them I would take that as tacit acceptance on his part that rolls were OK. Why not get in her face beforehand even if he didn't approve of having to re-roll? It's not her fault he didn't re-roll with quite as much luck.

@wow
That's something I struggled with some of my guildies over. We would pug people into raids with us, and I had to carefully explain to them, "Yes, we do loot council, but we're very fair. You won't be overlooked just because you're not in the guild." So when a piece would drop that a guildie would really, really want, it was difficult listening to my guildmates saying, "What? Why not just give the piece to our friend?" Why? Because it would be rude to make the loot rules "You can have anything we don't want," and furthermore, no one will raid with us if the impression is that we're loot whores.
Thankfully, people got over that, but it was difficult at times.
