Two Bosses Enter: Echo of Baine vs. Peroth'arn

With a resounding roar of the crowd and the spectacular boom of the fireworks overhead, Season 3 of Two Bosses Enter has begun! Our first matchup mixes up the past and the future in one fell swoop by bringing two combatants from two edges of time into the same arena. From the bleak future of End Time comes the coalesced fear, anger, and sorrow of tauren chieftain Baine Bloodhoof, a powerful entity lingering on in an Azeroth obliterated by Deathwing. Plucked from the past is Peroth'arn, a satyr guard of the Well of Eternity, placed in the majestic palace courtyard to ward off invaders of the Well rituals. Both of these combatants have their work cut out for them in this matchup.
Since many bosses are being designed these days with area of effect abilities and environmental obstacles that must be overcome in order to defeat the encounter, I want to stress the rules a little bit on Two Bosses Enter -- environmental abilities and cool stuff are fair game and always have been fair game. The arena can be whatever you want it to be. For instance, Echo of Baine has a very cool ability with which he destroys platforms floating in lava. From here on out, the mages of Dalaran employed by the great Tirion Fordring on his Board of Tournament Creation and Trusts will now magically transform the arena into whatever the combatants could reasonably ask for. Remember this when discussing the outcome, readers.

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

The remnants of the shattered essence of the tauren chieftain Baine Bloodhoof is a sad tale of regret, remorse, and ultimate defeat. Deathwing's prophecies and proclamations have come -- the Hour of Twilight has long tolled the Azerothian bell. With ultimate failure comes the ultimate price -- too strong to die, too weak not to walk the remains of the world, a bitter, shattered echo of your former glory. This is Baine's ultimate fate if Deathwing is to succeed.
Baine's echo dwells in the Obsidian Dragonshrine in the Dragonblight, a nest of dangerous black dragons with vicious fire attacks in an inhospitable swamp of molten lava. It's hot, too. Uncomfortably hot. In the middle of the lava lake float large stones that Baine expertly navigates with jumps, devastating crashes, and weapon throws.
For the purposes of the fight between the Echo of Baine and Peroth'arn, the arena will resemble the Baine environment in the Obsidian Dragonshrine. Peroth'arn will understand that Baine can, at any moment, crash into a platform and sink the sucker. It's pretty apparent anyway from the size of Baine. Look at that guy.
How would you feel if you had failed not only yourself, your people, your Horde, and your ancestors, but also the world itself? You failed. You were too proud. Then, in a moment, all of that fear and doubt became real and began to wander, aimlessly, through the dragon graveyard. Forever.
Baine's abilities include:
- Molten Axe Echo of Baine's axe gets supercharged when he dips into the lava around his platforms.
- Molten Fists Echo of Baine's enemies can also dip into the lava for a Molten Fists buff, inflicting extra fire damage on hit.
- Pulverize Baine slams down his totem, destroying the platform he is on and hitting all nearby enemies for a nice chunk of damage. Platforms will eventually return but take some time.
- Throw Totem Echo of Baine throws his totem at a target, causing lots of damage and knocking his target back. His totem can then be picked up and thrown back at Baine, stunning him briefly and increasing his damage taken.

When the Well was young and the World Tree stood tall and proud in the middle of the great kaldorei civilization, many Highborne practicing the arcane arts began to feel a strange pull. This strange pull was tugging at their hearts, their minds, their very magical essences, teasing them with aspirations and powers and forces uncontrollable. This was the Twisting Nether, and it was beautiful chaos. The pull was too great for many, and eventually those many plead their allegiance to Xavius. They became the satyrs, demonic corrupted Highborne who aided the Burning Legion in the first takeover attempt of Azeroth. Once and for all, the Burning Legion and Sargeras would reap terrible vengeance on the Titans.
As the summoning of Sargeras through the Well of Eternity was proceeding, Titanic constructs rebelled against the summoning of the fallen Titan. The Dragon Aspects had been tricked into forming the Dragon Soul and, well, you know the rest of that whole ordeal. At the Palace of Azshara, a demonic army marches out from the Twisting Nether into portals that will take them to their invasion points all over Kalimdor. The invasion would be total, and it would be final.
Guarding the gates of the palace was Peroth'arn, a satyr suckered in to the same fate of his breathren Highborne, now with no choice but to serve Fel leaders. His speed, fel flames, and dangerous Eyes will ferret out any sneaky foe. Fel corruption oozes out of his every pore, decaying everything in his vicinity. There is nothing in Peroth'arn of the original night elf, so naive, so easily tempted by a fool's power.
For the purposes of the fight, Drain Essence does not need to be interrupted by Illidan, but if you want it to be interrupted by Illidan, by all means.
Peroth'arn's abilities include:
- Corrupting Touch Peroth'arn's melee attacks apply a stacking debuff, increasing their damage taken by 10% a stack.
- Fel Flames Calling on the might of the Legion, Peroth'arn calls down a fel fireball on a target, inflicting damage and fire decay over time.
- Fel Decay Peroth'arn's presence and sickly touch causes a random target to decay from within. (Gross!) Healers who attempt to heal the sickly target will have their healing inflicted as shadow damage against them.
- Drain Essence When he hits 60%, Peroth'arn casts Drain Essence. This attack is immediately followed by the Eyes of Peroth'arn, which hunt his prey. If prey is found, they are stunned, and Peroth'arn gets a big boost to his attack speed.
- Endless Frenzy Peroth'arn goes into a frenzy at 20% health, increasing his damage by 25%.

I think far too many people are neglecting the fact that Players in the Peroth'arn encounter have Illidan on their side providing a MASSIVE buff. No such help here for Baine. Try to take that, too, into account when making your decision.

These have never been a battle contests, but popularity contests :P

Baine's gimmick is inherent to his setting. Pero's isn't. Assuming a truly neutral arena, i.e. no islands for Baine to smash, no lava bath for Pero, this shouldn't even be an issue. Hell, even if there _is_ lava, and Pero dips into it, the lava buff plus the stacking debuff inflicted on Baine by Pero's melee attacks should end it pretty quickly.
Fletcher Jan 16th 2012 8:29PM
Pugs have shown me that the most likely outcome is that Peroth'arn fails to dodge the dragon mobs, pulls aggro, runs to the rest of his party, dies, and wipes the group.

While Baine seems to have the popular vote atm, the mechanics point to Baine failing big time...
Baine has the Molten Fists mechanic that buffs his enemies melee damage, AND his Totem stuns him when thrown back at him.
Pero'Tharn has a stacking damage increase debuff on melee, and a requirement that his opponent could be stealthy... Last I checked, Baine ain't that stealthy...
Mechanics alone give this to Pero'Tharn, but because of popular vote, inc Baine win...

Yeah, I'm starting to think that including the Echoes was a mistake. Sure, they're not "real" faction leaders, but meh, does that really matter? Faction leaders, fake or not, are going to roflstomp over everybody and everything, leaving this contest deadlocked between the four of them and _maybe_ Murozond, because who doesn't love that fight?

"What is this SMELL?"
Pero'than's voice echos back across the canyon. The lava pool covering half the valley had four slabs of solidified magma floating on it, in what was roughly a diamond shape. The smell was sulpher, mixed with death. Pleasant. In the distance, he could make out a distant shape impaled on a large tower.
Pero'than frowned. Was that the dragon who CREATED the dragon soul, his beloved master's key into this world? Impossible... yet...
Removing such distractions from his mind, the satyr looked across the molten field at an almost ghostly figure, standing on the farthest platform. One of those lesser beasts from the forest, he knew, but this one has a look of intelligence in his eyes. Or her, Pero'than thought, one never knows with these brutes.
Hopping from the shore to the first volcanic slab, Pero'than lost his footing and slipped into the lava beneath. Dragging himself up quickly, he noticed that it seemed to stick to his furred hands, albeit painfully. He noted this and moved on to the second rock, adjacent to the one his primal opponent.
"Pero'than, formerly of the Highborne, now of the Burning Legion, fights against what remains of Baine Bloodhoof, fallen chieftain of the Bloodhoof tribe and the tauren for the Horde. Witnessing this battle is Chromie of the Bronze Dragonflight, gender unknown, and Tirion Fordring, an extremely bored and pret- OK, who wrote this cue card?"
Disguising his snickering as a cough (if only due to the presence of the bronze dragon), glanced over to two figured he somehow missed before. The one who spoke has odd pink skin, grey-white hair, and armor that glowed a yellow almost as bright as the protective shield around him. A second creature, half the height of Tirion, was maintaining the shield. Pero'than sensed that attacking them would be suicide, and since they seemed content with just watching, he ignored them.
Leaping and landing on the rock with the beast - Baine, he remembered - Pero'than dips his claws in the lava and begins a punch filled with the raw power of molten earth. But the tauren has tricks of his own. Stepping back to dodge the blow, Baine dips his axe in the pool behind him and slashes at his opponent, slicing tufts of satyr hair off Pero'than's chest, and leaving a trail of smoke sprouting from the shortened fur.
Pero'than notices a shift in Baine's footing, and steps to the side to avoid hiss obvious kick. That would have worked well, except that the kick wasn't aimed at Pero'than, it was aimed at the extremely fragile rock beneath both of them.
The rock shatters.
Feeling the lava flowing around him, knowing that even a few seconds could do serious damage, he swims to the nearest rock and drags himself up at the same time Baine reaches it. Pero'than readies another flaming punch, but Baine slams him first with the full might of his totems, sending him flying back among the floating rock that was the last platform. Realising it might be better to stay away from Baine until the lava drips clean, Pero'than swims to the rock opposite Baine, and climbs up.
"This was supposed to be an easy fight!" Pero'than roars. "You're just a filthy animal." As if to prove his point, Baine snorts and paws the ground with his hoof.
"Now you will KNOW POWER!"
Pero'than's magic lifts Baine up as he begins to consume the apparition. But as luck would have it, he lost his footing and fell to one knee, shattering his concentration. Realizing his mistake, Pero'than fades into the shadows, and sends out his demonic eyes to search for the ghost, who seemingly vanished along with him.
Baine suddenly appears, though not die to his magic. He shatters the platform beneath Pero'than's feet, bringing renewed agony as lava burns skin already burnt. Feeling weak, Pero'than swims to the only platform not yet used (the one closest to shore).
"This filthy animal says hi."
Once more, the full force of Baine's totems slam into Perothan, knocking him back to the molten debris. Searing pain engulfs Pero'than, who knew that he spent much longer than is healthy in the lava. He blacks out.
-----------
"Will this affect the past?" Tirion asks his draconic companion.
"Not at all. He won't remember a thing." Chomie replied. "Let's head back to your present so you can run this tounament. I'm curious to see how this turns out, even though I already know."
Tirion rolls his eyes as the Black Dragonshrine of the future - the grim, chaotic future of Deathwing's desires - fades.

I usually write replies to the column in a well-thought-out argument, but for some reason this one called out of a story. It was a bit longer than intended, but I think it turned out okay. I'll try to shorten any future ones, if I do write more.

Honestly Pero had this in his pocket... Stacking debuff and not to mention drain essence which weakens Baine by Alot. Then the eyes and no Illidan to hide Jim. Resulting in a stun. Mechanic wise Pero wins.
Garnlok Jan 16th 2012 10:28PM
To all those giving this to Paroth'arn on mechanics you're forgetting a few key things. Since both combantents are expected to fight intelegently Baine can trigger his lava buff as often as Peroth'arn does. Being 1vs1 Peroth will also take the full brunt of magma damage every time Baine shatters the rock, and when the eye phase starts the eyes will either die to the lava or Bane can avoid them with his leap, giving Peroth'arn the debuff for failing to find anyone (Not sure why that wasn't mentioned, but I've seen it before). All in all I think Baine has this one easily despite Peroth'arns DoT's and stacking buff.

Peroth'arn surveyed the large circular area outside the palace, arms folded and a furrowed brow on his face. The portal leading up to the palace had been disabled, yet the ones on the left and right remained. He looked down the steps, as demons marched across the courtyard in opposite directions and into their respective portals, surprised but not concerned until the next thing that happened.
There was a crack in the wall, before lava spurted forth and began to flood the courtyard. As the lava, unmatched in heat and fury, spread across to the crystals and undernearth the feet of the marching demons, the portal controls exploded and the last of the demons dashed into the portals, desperate to avoid the inferno beneath their heels. Peroth'arn gazed at the crack, before chuckling. It had been a dull day.
There was a flash of light from above, and four large stone platforms dropped into the lava pool as it ceased to fill any further, reaching as high up the stairs as Peroth'arn chose to stand. The light subsided and a figure was visible, yet transparent, knelt on the furthest stone. With both intrigue and irritation, Peroth'arn leapt from the stairs and onto the nearest stone. The echo of Baine stood and looked around sagely, before locking eyes with the satyr.
"I have failed my people. My ancestors may not rest because of my actions, but I shall honour their memory. This destruction, this heat...it can only be your fault!" Baine roared, raising his axe. The satyr chuckled.
"Such fantasy and deception is amusing, but it cannot go unpunished. Prepare to die!" Peroth'arn laughed, running and leaping to the second stone, before making the final leap onto Baine's platform and engaging him in combat. The Tauren's axe swung into Peroth'arn's corrupted flesh, causing him to scream in agony, slashing back and slowly corrupting the echo. Baine struck harder with every blow, his rage unrelenting, but with every hit Pero'tharn corrupted him further, and further, tainting his spirit.
"Whoever you let down, whoever you lost...you're going to fail as miserably as they did!" Peroth'arn cackled, casting an incantation and causing a fireball, constructed from fel magic and dangerous flame, to land directly on Baine, burning at the apparition's form. Baine howled in rage, raising his axe high and smashing down towards Peroth'arn, who stepped backwards nimbly. The axe struck the stone and the platform beneath them both disappeared into the lava. Hissing, Peroth'arn endured the heat and swiftly leapt onto another platform, turning to face where Baine had stood: there was nothing. He looked at his claws, which were red with heat, looking back up with only a moment to spare before the totem hit him in the face.
"Cheap trick!" the satyr groaned, climbing to his feet as the ferocious apparition clomped out of the lava, continuing his assault. His axe was red with molten fury, and one hit was enough to tell Peroth'arn that unless he did something, his minutes were numbered.
"DIE!" Baine roared, bringing the axe towards the satyr - but suddenly ceasing his attack. Fel magic raised him into the air above Peroth'arn, slowly draining him of his life. He gasped for air, slowly losing his grip on his weapon. Peroth'arn grinned wickedly. This would soon be over. Baine let out an exhausted gasp as his hand unclenched, dropping the molten hot axe onto Peroth'arn's foot, breaking his concentration and releasing Baine. Baine recovered his axe as the satyr faded into nothing. "SHOW YOURSELF, COWARD!"
"As you wish..." Peroth'arn cackled, as his demonic eyes descended upon the platform, spotting Baine with ease thanks to his glowing axe. One was enough to stun him as the satyr reappeared from nowhere, with glowing claws from a possible dash in the lava attacking with a rejuvenated frenzy from the hunt. When Baine finally caught his balance, he raised his now-dull axe and took another swing at Peroth'arn, both of them suffering from the fight. The satyr roared before going into an Endless Frenzy, attacking swiftly and many times between each of Baine's attacks.
"No! My ancestors!" Baine screamed, throwing a totem at Peroth'arn, temporarily dazing him. "They-"
"-will be receiving a new visitor!" Peroth'arn cackled, throwing the totem at Baine and charging him, clawing fiercely and delivering the coup de grace. The Tauren fell backwards into the lava, defeated.
Peroth'arn cackled to himself, standing victorious on the rock and looking up into the sky with a smirk. He then turned his attention to the lava and the stones in the courtyard.
"I'm not cleaning this up..." he coughed, before disappearing once more.

Sorry, but no, you're wrong. First off, the only reason the eye phase occurs in the first place is because Illidan interrupts Peroth'arn's Drain Essence. Since Illidan isn't there, the phase must be totally disregarded, meaning Drain Essence isn't stopped leaving Baine at a huge disadvantage, if not outright killing him.
Secondly, while Baine gets his Molten Axe buff, since both contenders are expected to fight intellegently, it shouldn't take long for Peroth'arn to figure out that he can get the same buff. And lets not forget Corrupting Touch which increases damage taken for each application, and Fel decay which is a pretty heavy source of damage. This isn't to say Baine is at a total loss. He does have the ability to smash the platforms and hurl his totem...
Which brings me to my last point, Baine's totem, which can be hurled back at him for high damage, a stun, and yet another debuff. Its not about one boss having more difficult mechanics. Its about one boss having a significantly larger toolbox than the other. Baine has three different abilities he can use while Peroth'arn has six (excluding his enrage but including Baine's totem and Molten Fists). If this contest were based on something other than popularity, Peroth'arn would win this bout hands down.

Ok so let's set the stage so everything is accounted for.
We are on Baine's turf in the time twisted Obsidian Sanctuary. By design Illidan will be there to provide the shadow walk buff and just in case he will only interrupt drain essence so it is just Baine and Peroth'arn fighting. Peroth'arn will also get the buff/debuff when he goes for a molten swim.
Right off the bat Baine has the home field advantage and of course Illidan to provide a nice buff. But upon 60% and all of Peroth'arn's eyes come out, where is Baine to go? There's a reason Tauren aren't rogues, besides them as a whole being better people. And there are ways to stun Baine too. Tossing his own totem at him can almost negate Baine's axe buff for the duration and Peroth'arn can get in some fel fires and decays.
However when we think about the lore we have the Tauren chieftan who failed his people and now "lives" (I don't know if it's actually them or some phantasm) with the frustration of his failures and has all the rage that comes with sitting and thinking about them exclusively. Baine is an intelligent fellow I'm sure and even in a rage can think of a strategy more than "hit them with totem". To the point of taking brief lava baths for his buff and downing platforms with too much fel fire. Peroth'arn is a former Night Elf who foolishly lead himself and others down a path of eternal corruption.
Any serious match would be close but Baine wins for all his rage and desperation to fail no more.

TBE is a huge popularity contest. Everyone knows mechanic-wise, Pero has this fight in his pocket

I don't get how Baine is popular anyway. Has anyone read his short story? He's an idiot.
Kalmar Jan 18th 2012 3:56AM
Peroth"arn traversed though the palace gardens, looking around exitingly, today is the day when his new great lord Sargaras would enter Azeroth adn grant even more power to his lojal folowers. but then sudenly everything was going white, slowing down, Peroth"arn starteled looked around to see if their was any enemies nearby, could Illeden have cast this spell on him. SHOW YOURSELF: Peroth"arn shouted angriely, he was about to cast his own spell, when sudenly a black place with lava came into view, and some kind of animal looking part corperal, part physical stood at the other side on a platform.
Unbenouced to the curropted highborn however it was not any usual kind of infiltrators that had cast their spell, it was the Aspect of time himself, Nozdormu. Norzdormu knew that he coudent send himself, his flight or any heroes to the past before they had defeated his other self, Murozond, but at least this proved that he could bring enteties from the past into the future, in this case he hoped that using Paroth"arn to defeat the echo of baine so that the heroes would have less obsticals in their path. But it was importent not to lett the Satyr know, or otherwise the future might get in even greater jerpurdy, so all that the Aspect of time could do now was wait.
Peroth"arn was realizing that he must have been brought somewhere far from the well, anger engulfed him: NOOOO, i cant stay here i must be at the well to recieve my reward from my lord!: The Echo of baine hearing the angry shout opened his eyes and saw a creture with horns and hoves, hair covering much of its body, not so different from himslef, only that it also had Claws instead og hands. the cheften had never seen the Satyr but knew what they where and who they served. A thought rushed his mind: YOU, are you the one responsible for what has happend here?: The young cheften had forgoten in his rage that it was Deathingwing who caused the hour of twilight.
Peroth"arn atension whent back to baine: Shut up you missereble little illusio-: he noticed something, staring for a few seconds and then began a small laugh: Ahaha, I see the magic surounding you now, that must mean that if i destroy you i will be sent back to the palace: With that Peroth"arn made his way though first platform, then on the second one he noticed that the lava was stiking to and empowering his claws, though somewat painfull, and just when he was about to cross the the third one where Baine was standing, Baine shouted: What dark horrers have you brought in this place? By my ancestors honor - i shall take you to task!: In responce Preoth"arn shouted: No mortal may stand before me and live!: The two finely joining combat.
The echo of Baine knowing that he was imune the the lavas heat diped his axe into the sticky liquid, and then swong it into the satyrs chest making him scream of pain, at the same time Peroth"arn used his Curropting touch on the spectre making it take more damage, though not emidietly. Peroth"arn casted felflames on the platform and and slashed eagerly for it to explode beneath the tourens fett, but even though Baine was blind to the truth, he was not blind to the danger, and Pulverized the platform, therby negaiting the spell from ever finnishing and bringing his opponent to the lava. Peroth"arn felling the searing heat on his body began swiming to the next platform, all the while Baine was hacink on with his axe on the satyrs back. when peroth"arn steped up on the platform he felt drained and needed energy, and their was plenty of energy on this half corporal creature: YOUR essence is MINE!: shouted Peroth"arn adn held Baine in the air where he coudent do anything but strugel. but Baine had ways to deal with opponent from a distance as well, using only one hand to ceep his neck from being snaped from the magic he grabed one of his totems with the other and though it at the satyr. Peroth"arn was in the lava agein but quicly maneged to get up agein, anfry and in pain he grabed Baines totem and prepared to though it back at the horned creture, but saw nothing. suprised Preoth"arn summoned forth a large amount of eyes and made them search for the creture, but they found nothing: I can see you: said Peroth"arn hoping to fool the touren to show himself. Baine emerged from the lava where he had been hiding, a trait that was unusual for a touren, bit Baine had done the same to Magatha grimtotem, using a false storm to hide goblin zeppelins and conquer Thunderbluff. Baine made another pulverize one Peroth"arns curent platform: My wrath knows no bounds!: Suprised peroth"arn receved anothe slice before trowing the totem at him, and then swam to the next platform thinking: Clever, littel worm: Baine folowed when he recovered but Paroth"arn used fel flames to block him from aproching, Preoth"arn then proceded casting Fel decay, causing much pain to the touren. Baine responded by thowing another totem at the satyr and then made his way up the platform before Peroth"arn, the two exchenging blows. Peroth"arn wanting to use the totem agein grabed it, but before he could Baine used another Pulverize: their will be no escape!: it was pwerfull enough that the totem sliped from Peroth"arns claws, casting fel decay while he swam to the final platfrom. when Peroth"arn emerged he had no hair left on his body and extremly chared, in pain and in anger Peroth"arn shouted: ENOUGH! it is time to end this game!: going in to a frenzy peroth"arn slashed at the touren with molten claws, finely doing more harm to his advesery then what he took himself, he finely saw victory in his bruning green eyes. But that though shatered into as many pieces as the final platform when baine used his final pulverize. With no more ground to stand on the satyr was dommed: NO! How can can this be!: was his last words before his head and then his claws sank in to the lava. Baine Victories but not queled said: Suffer for your arrogance: He then proceded to raise to platforms agein, where it was less sound to desdurb him.
Norzdormu dissapointed that one of Murozonds creations had foiled his plan to make it easier for the heroes, but he had could do this agein to the other echos in the dragon shrines if needed. As for peroth"arn, he died in the future so his past is still intact, the time has not been altered.
PS: my first comment, hope you like it^^

It suffers from the "Wall of Text" syndrome. Please try using paragraphing.
As it is, hardly anyone will read it. I know I couldn't bring myself to.
