However there is a difference between referencing something and saying a faction you support needs to do the same thing.

1)"alliance need to pull a dresden"
is different from
2)Dresden was bombed during world war 2
1 implies approval, this is very different from the meaning of 2, which is a plain reference, you can disagree with that if you like but doesnt change the facts that they are different.
