You cast a DoT, not the individual ticks of that DoT. When you press a key or click a button, there is, per Fox's math, a 10% chance to duplicate that press, be it MB or VT or whathaveyou.

Semantically you might be right but this isn't how the staff works. I have it and have studied it a good bit. Whole DoTs do not replicate I.e. you won't have two copies of shadow word : pain. DoT ticks do replicate and the damage is logged as Wrath of Tarecgosa. Non dot spells do replicate and getting logged as just another version of that spell. I.e. shows up as two mind blasts in your log with no indication one was a copy.
Also dots and non dot spells can have different proc rates. I haven't retested since the nerf but I believe it's now in the 5-7% proc chance range. Still a huge buff.
