Breakfast Topic: Have you ever won the Fishing Tournament?

Winning the contest is simple ... in theory. Once the contest starts at 14:00 server time, fish in every pool in Northrend you can find until you get a Blacktip Shark. When you get it, bring it back to Dalaran. There's a lot of luck involved, but the contest is definitely winnable, especially now that it's been out for over two years.
The derby offers some pretty sweet rewards. It's the only place in the game where you can obtain an heirloom ring. (You could opt for boots that increase your fishing skill by 15 instead, but who'd ever choose that instead?)
Do you participate in the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby? Have you already won your Dread Pirate Ring prize? Or is the random nature and high competition level of the contest simply not worth your time?

Cool story, bro.

The ring is flashier, probably because it's an heirloom. But when I have it on an alt, there are always better rings to equip. The 5% XP is not all that great now. The boots, +15 to fishing skill, plus they teleport you to booty bay!-what's not to love? I wish I had boots that took me directly to booty :p

10-1 Your horde. Its stacked against you. The NPC should be in the senter of town not the fountain. Alliance have a good lead if they hearth back at the same time as a horde to Dal since they walk liss than 1/5th the distance. Blizzards ballance on this contest was a little more favorable to alliance...

Haven't participated yet, until later today...

I won the Kalu'ak tourney on my main. I was so nervous when I hearthed back to Dalaran and turned in my fish. I quickly picked my prize (ring- would have taken the boots had I had more time). He has the Salty title too. I am working on getting the Salty title on my mage now as well as on my bank mage (her name is Pikkle). I have never done the STV fishing tourney. Maybe I will after football season is over.

Too random. Feels more like a lottery than a test of skill. So, I pretend the tournament don't even exist.

Low quality water texture =O! It burns my eyes!

The few times I've attempted to go in, a winner was usually announced within a few minutes of the event starting. Meaning that usually when I got there, the event was either already over, or over before I really got a chance to participate. The event itself isn't really that interesting in my opinion, either. The height of excitement is when you have people flagged and landing near a node you're also going after. But even then, there are bigger and better ways of instigating World PvP.
It also doesn't help that on one of my old realms, both of the victories were monopolized by the same two people nearly every week. I'm not even really sure how they did it--the events are supposed to have a level of RNG to it, but apparently that doesn't matter. A lot of world events can be like this--rare spawns, world bosses, and so on. I don't really tend to enjoy them as a result. They feel less like an actual competition and more like a fixed ring match or lottery.

That sucks. They should make it so you can only win it once per toon. On my server, it usually goes anywhere from 6-10 min. Usually 7 min, in, there is a winner.

I haven't given this a shot since wrath but if I recall correctly it, some times, took somewhere between 2 to 3 minutes for it to be over.
That just left me with a feeling that... I just never had a chance to begin with so never bothered again.

Yeah, it's like that. It can sometime take a little longer now because people aren't in Northrend much any more. But back in the day, I think the statistic was that the Tourney was usually done within 8 minutes.

I absolutely quit trying once I found out the same people could win it multiple times. One day i noticed two people already wearing the Salty fishing the same spots as me during the tournament. I whispered them asking them why. They both said they were trying to get the ring. I immediately thought of the hundreds of people those two (and others like them) were potentially screwing out of their Salty titles and promptly banked my fishing pole. It's already hard enough to win. Finding out i was also competing against people who had already won was just too much. What was Blizz thinking when they added that stupid ring as a reward? That's no place for an heirloom if you ask me.

I've never won the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, but I did once win the Booty Bay Fishing Extravaganza.
I set a timer on this past Easter Sunday to remind myself that it was happening. Since it was Easter the online server population was quite low and the competition was minimal. I set my hearth for the Booty Bay inn and ran up and down the Eastern coast of Lower STV.
And that's how I won.

That's pretty much how I won the Booty Bay Fishing Extravaganza a few years back as well. Easter Sunday was a prime time to try for that contest. I only saw 3 or 4 level 80s on the eastern side of the peninsula and a small handful of twinks. Luck was with me and now I'm Salty!

Yup, won mine on Xmas day a few years back on a Sunday, no problem at all. A friend of mine won hers this past year on Xmas Sunday as well. Big holidays are a good time to try to win these things.

I had it even easier...I won it on the 1st day the contest started (and again on the 3rd, trading wins with a Horde fisherman for the first month).
The time it took me to win was quite a bit longer than what it takes these days, with all the competition, so it was certainly not as difficult a task as it is now. But for that one week, I was the proud owner of the only Hook of the Master Angler (http://www.wowhead.com/item=19979) on the whole server!
