Breakfast Topic: Have you ever won the Fishing Tournament?

Winning the contest is simple ... in theory. Once the contest starts at 14:00 server time, fish in every pool in Northrend you can find until you get a Blacktip Shark. When you get it, bring it back to Dalaran. There's a lot of luck involved, but the contest is definitely winnable, especially now that it's been out for over two years.
The derby offers some pretty sweet rewards. It's the only place in the game where you can obtain an heirloom ring. (You could opt for boots that increase your fishing skill by 15 instead, but who'd ever choose that instead?)
Do you participate in the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby? Have you already won your Dread Pirate Ring prize? Or is the random nature and high competition level of the contest simply not worth your time?

My wife and I used to do it all the time. About the 3rd time we did the Kalu'ak one she caught the shark, then her game froze when she hearthed back to Dal. It was a few minutes before someone else turned it in, but she missed out because she ended up having to reboot her computer. :(

I've never won the Derby, though I did catch a Blacktip Shark one time. Someone else clicked the button a split second before me.: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bbleeker/6735862891/.

I *have* won the STV tournament however - on two characters even.

No. However, if I wait until DST ends (or begins, I can never figure that out), I may have a chance.

I won my first and only Stranglethorn Vale fishing derby. Beat out a guy in my guild (who I had no idea was going for it at the same time I was) and he started swearing at me in guild chat. I'd only been there for about 3 days, so that was a nice intro to my guild... Fortunately, everyone else is much nicer. lol
Still can't get that damn Mr. Pinchy though, so I'm stuck missing an achieve for my Salty title.

Keep at it. I just got Mr. Pinchy on my pet collector toon. Took a couple days of dedicated fishing. Just remember it needs to be highland mixed pools. Good thing to fish for after server resets ;)

No, I haven't. But thank you SO MUCH for reminding people about it. >:(

No, I've never won and don't see a chance for me to ever be able to. Both tournaments start at times when I'm unavailable to play. The one time I was able to participate was way back in BC, and didn't even stand a chance!
Culhag Jan 21st 2012 8:55AM
I won the Stranlethorn contest during BC, and I don't feel the need for the ring (don't play a lot of alts), so I never attempted the Kaluak tournament.

It's the last fishing achievement I need for the meta.
Alas, I will never become Salty Underwood at this rate...
Cuttlehoof Jan 21st 2012 9:02AM
I have this achievement on my Hunter Cuttlehoof (Thaurissan Horde). He was my first character, WoW being the first game that I ever stuck with a character from the get go (I have a tendency to remake characters over and over again based on my mood). I don't raid with him anymore, I just do achievements and other fun stuff :D You can catch him hanging out in org, constantly transmogging and sporting my favourite title of all, Salty!
pfl.guy Jan 21st 2012 9:03AM
won the stranglethorn tourney, but was disappointed when there was no achievement attached to the new event...so i've never even tried.

Uh, yeah there is. Since you already one of them, you got it. Plus you could not have got the Salty title ;)
Kirembri Jan 21st 2012 9:04AM
No, stupid tournament. It's not from a lack of trying, either. I've finally transferred off of that hellish PvP server, which would give me some hope for winning it except that I moved to an Oceanic server and the tournament is now 2am my time :D. Moved there with my Australian guildmate in the hopes that he'll finally be able to at least try to win it, so I've got my fingers crossed for him ^_^
Noyou Jan 21st 2012 10:44AM
I'd stay up til 2am on a Saturday/Sunday just to do it, but that's just me.

More like Fox Van "I'm going to remind everyone else that there's still a fishing tournament so people can't sneakily win one this week"
It's one of those really long royal names or something.

The ONLY time I have caught a Blacktip Shark so far, I miss the turn-in by mere milliseconds…!
There I am, hearthed back to Dal, Nitro Boosts outta the inn and towards the walrus…
Literally, LITERALLY, clicking on the Complete Quest button; and I see a toon right next to me, with the same handwashing animation that we do all the time in WoW…
I was SO bummed out, SO SO angry, SO SO SO frustrated…!!!
And that was two weeks ago, and now you gotta bring it up and throw salt on the wound…!
Sephrenia Jan 21st 2012 9:36AM
"You could opt for boots that increase your fishing skill by 15instead, but who'd ever choose that instead?" what a sweeping, dismissive statement. You are automatically assuming that people have alts. I only really play one character, so I chose the boots when I won the Kalu'ak Derby. Having yet another way to get about faster appealed to me along with the increase to fishing skill. Of course, I did win a long time ago, back in the days when skill counted for something.

Yes, I have won the Stranglethorn fishing contest, which was the last achievement I needed to get the "Salty" title. I was very happy.
