Breakfast Topic: Have you ever won the Fishing Tournament?

Winning the contest is simple ... in theory. Once the contest starts at 14:00 server time, fish in every pool in Northrend you can find until you get a Blacktip Shark. When you get it, bring it back to Dalaran. There's a lot of luck involved, but the contest is definitely winnable, especially now that it's been out for over two years.
The derby offers some pretty sweet rewards. It's the only place in the game where you can obtain an heirloom ring. (You could opt for boots that increase your fishing skill by 15 instead, but who'd ever choose that instead?)
Do you participate in the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby? Have you already won your Dread Pirate Ring prize? Or is the random nature and high competition level of the contest simply not worth your time?

I've won both. Stranglethorn twice. The Kalu'ak I once lost by the length of a loading screen. I hearthed, and because I had a crappy computer, it took forever to load Dal. I was a third of the way to the turn in point when a different winner was announced. Had my loading screen been quicker I would have won it. Actually, I think something like that happened twice. But I won eventually, so it's all good.

Yes. I've been proudly rocking "Salty Tanddoori" for well over a year now.
I've posted my story on here before, but I feel it deserves a re-telling.
It was late in Wrath, so Dalaran was still a bustling metropolis. I get myself all set up in the lakes in the northern part of Howling Fjord. The announcement rings out and I go to town. By my sixth or seventh cast, I get the shark. My jaw hit the floor. I pop open my bags, go for my hearthstone, and my heart almost stops. It's on cooldown. COOLDOWN!!!!!
So, after a bit of swearing, I mount up, and start out on the longest ride to Dalaran I've ever partook. The whole way my heart is pounding, just waiting for that announcement that the tourney is over.
I fly into Dal, beeline it straight for the questgiver, and win my Salty title and my heirloom ring.
Swear to God, far more exhilarating than my 25man Heroic Lich King kill.

I know the feeling and congrats! Yes, for all those who may have their hearth on Dalaran, make sure you DO NOT hearth before the contest. Unless you are a mage ;) Save your hearth for when you need to get back to Dal.

Twice each, to get each of the prizes, and now I intend never to participate again.

Protip: turn down your graphics settings and turn off your addons for faster loading when you hearth.

I've won it twice on different toons.
Thanks falling subscription numbers and dead servers (Gorefiend)!

only tried a couple times. I found it hard to compete with DKs.

Done it twice, won it twice.
First time was for shiggles and gits, second time was to get Salty.

Now that I know Alex has not I feel bad :(
I have won. Fishing and Pet collecting is what I do to remain sane in Azeroth and in Real Life.
I rather fish while I wait on randoms and when I use to wait on raid's to begin.
Before BC Fishing in the STV Tournament had to be some of the funnest times. I did finally win it two times in '07 I think it was.
No one would fish during Holiday Events back then so I would :) I was still trying for the Nat Pagle Boots. If only I could hang out with him all day.
I finally won my Booty Bay Boots right before Cat hit it Took FOREVER! So many Saturday's put on hold for this! I Except for my son's Soccer games though.
I would like to attempt to try again for the ring someday....
Being born on and living on an Island makes me such a Fishing Nerd

I've tried many times on my druid to win the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, but I have thus far failed. As of late it takes anywhere between 5-12 minutes to lose the RNG event of doom. I did however manage to win the Fishing Extravaganza down in Booty Bay a few years back on my shaman, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to gain the ring, and possibly another salty title, for my druid.

After 2 yrs of trying, I did win the Kalu'ak tourney. And I got Mr Pinchy the same week. However, I still need "The One that didn't Get Away" for the Salty title.

Yup.. And now they call me "salty".

Yes, I've won the Kalu'ak one, and yes, it's utterly luck-dependent (luck in getting the RNG, luck in having enough local pools spawned, luck in not having other people competing for the same schools), assisted slightly by my having the Dalaran teleport ring. I took the heirloom reward, which was a pretty dumbass decision, in retrospect (it's useless to me now all my characters on the server are 85).
Sometimes I consider going back and having another go to get the boots... but the main reason I'd need the boots would be to win the Booty Bay fishing contest... which if I won the boots, I wouldn't need to do. So that logic loops in my head a couple of times and then I lose interest.

The day I transferred my toon to a new more hardcore guild (back in Wrath), I won the Kaluak tourney. Never since, and I've tried almost every saturday and sunday. :x

Won the STV contest on Easter Sunday I guess it was 3 years ago. I remember it clearly for two reasons: It was only the second time I seriously attempted it and a group from one of the "We're cool because we're progression raiders" guilds was there griefing. They'd kill horde attempting to fish and jump up and down in my pools. I had basically given up but figured I'd keep fishing for rare fish. I ran a ways down the coast so they wouldn't bother me. To my surprise I hit 40 fish and still no shout. Quick hearth to Booty Bay and I'm in front of Riggle. The absolute best part: Just then the druid jumping in everyone's pools says "Congratulations to Salty (I forget the name it was stupid though) and thanks to all the people we pissed off." The very next line in the chat box was Riggle shouting my victory.. did a /1 "suck it" and went to enjoy my new fish transforming trinket in the Dalaran fountain.

I have won the STV contest twice but not attempted the Kalu'ak yet. I actually carry the STV trinket around with me and use it if I am swimming around low level areas.
Maybe I will try the Kal'ak derby someday.
Travy Jan 21st 2012 11:16AM
I've won the stranglethorn fishing contest on my main getting the nifty trinket that turns you into a fish :]. I've been meaning to try my hand at the kaluk one.
