Around Azeroth: Man bites dog
Are we really going to rehash this argument again? Look, Mr. Snuffles is an invaluable part of this raid group, plus he whines and tears up the carpet if I don't take him along with me. And as a raider, he should be allowed to roll on the loot! Sure, he can't use most of it, but he enjoys burying it in the front yard. Look, fair's fair. If you don't let him roll, you'll have to find another blood elf retadin. What do you mean, there are thousands of those? Fine! We're out of here. (Thanks to Bloodless of Mal'Ganis [US-H] for the screenshot!)

I actually see so few retadins anymore it's ridiculous. They seemed to make up the vast majority of the paladin population in Wrath, but my hypothesis (that I have no way of testing) is that they all went prot once Cata rolled around, chasing faster queue times. If I /inspect and then just run around clicking paladins, I'm actually pleasantly SURPRISED when I find a single ret in the vicinity.
It might be good that there are more tanks; I'll concede that. The downside, of course, is that most of the fresh protadins are either straight terrible or have the DPS mindset, and I honestly believe that protection paladins are the new "death knight tanks" of the Wrath days. At the very least, when our warrior is out and our raid group pugs a tank, experience shows I have the most reason to be nervous if I'm going to be working alongside another paladin.

I've been a prot paladin for years and these galldarn rookies aren't doin' their research. Usin' DPS gear and not taking Divine Guardian...make protadins look bad, me included! Get offa my lawn!

Not so much faster queue times, but more like all of Cata's changes killed any semblance of fun/survivability in retribution. And no, I'm not after your job (I hate tanking), I literally do more dps and *don't die* doing normal solo stuff in prot.

Yeah, and it's hard to stay competitive DPS-wise. Takes work and even that perfect execution will sometimes be undermined by the RNG gods frowning upon you. I was looking to compare my logs with other ret paladins on my server, and I discovered that there really aren't any others. Maybe 1 or 2 other people competitively raiding and often not as ret. I assume many of them probably went prot/holy or flipped to another DPS toon.

I was main spec holy with off-spec ret all through Wrath. Ret was fun to play on my off nights, for questing, or when we would decrease to 2 healers on heroic modes in 10 mans after running 3 for the first while.
Cata killed all the fun I had going ret. I didn't want a spec that was complicated to play when I went dps. I wanted something fun! If I wanted challenge, then that's what healing was for.
Now I'm holy all the time, even when doing dailies - I just can't stand ret. I am working on getting a prot gear set though, as I know questing/dailies will go a heck of a lot faster as prot than as holy. Ret is sadly dead to me. :(
