The aesthetic consequences of new character models

Redesigning these models will have a variety of effects. As a long-time player, I have my own stylistic loves and hates. Human females look astonishingly vapid and nigh-idiotic, and their animations in melee look ludicrous to the point that I expect them to fall over every weapon swing, while gnomes and blood elves have excellent combat flow. Female undead melee are awesome to watch, but I can't stand the bones poking through my gear. That's part of the complication here. The models you love, someone else hates, and the models you hate, someone else loves. That's often viewed as a cop-out -- but man, if you screw up my tauren, I will burn your world. (Note: Will not actually burn your world ... too lazy.)
Think about it. I've seen literally hundreds of players complain about tauren models, that they're too big, too blocky, etc. But those of us who play them play them for exactly that reason or because we rolled a druid back before troll was an option and got attached. For that matter, consider the troll, a model that is definitely not to everyone's taste but again has a strong base of fans who choose trolls even when it's not an advantage to do so.
Even if we ignore the very real issue of devoting development time to updated models and assume that there's a team ready to place on the project, which models get the update? We know worgen and goblins wouldn't (although some worgen females would probably want it), and its unlikely that draenei or blood elves would, either. I honestly have a hard time imagining what you'd do to update those models; they've been around since The Burning Crusade and still look pretty great.
So this leaves the original four races per faction to consider, eight out of 12 current races (13 in Mists of Pandaria), and we know some of those races aren't going to get a major overhaul. My own personal love for the tauren aside, what would you update? They're giant minotaur people, and they look exactly like that. Frankly, I'd rather see expanded options for them -- more skin colors, more horn choices, more hair/beard options, maybe that Grimtotem face paint -- than an actual, drastic change.

- What do the people currently playing those races say they like and dislike about their models? The last thing you want to do is drive people who've been playing a character for a while into feeling they no longer enjoy it. Any changes made should be made to increase their happiness.
- What about that race's model keeps people from playing it? Our own Alex Ziebart and I have constant arguments about this issue. He often plays human females; I can't stand the human models, male or female. I like night elves; they drive him insane. We've literally spent hours of our lives going back and forth on this one. I personally wouldn't want to see night elves lose their lithe, graceful animations but think they could undergo a bit of a facial reconstruction (and yes, you could shrink the hands down a bit) -- but I'd rip human models back down to the basic wire frame and rebuild them from scratch, if I could. I can only assume most players of human characters do not feel this way. (See #1 above.)
- What can be done to update those models without losing their character? This is the trickiest bit. Anyone who played the Cataclysm beta remembers when worgen models saw a drastic facial redesign to increase how feral they looked. (For a while there, we didn't have heads.) It worked for male worgen, but female worgen are a mixed bag for a lot of people, and a lot of us preferred the preview worgen women to the ones we actually got. Going forward with character updates, we want to see the essential nature of those models emphasized without losing anything we currently identify with, and that's a pretty significant task.
- How cool do they look in plate? I did say this was what I thought was most important.

So let's speculate: which races need work the most and can have said work done without radically disturbing their iconic status? We won't mention increased polygons, because that can just be assumed for everyone. Likewise, more hair and customization options would be nice for everyone. I also think WoW could take a page from other games and offer variations on body type for every race. We could have skinny humans, fat blood elves, extremely short orcs, tall gnomes. (A tall gnome would just be tall for a gnome.)
- Undead I'd say they don't need a lot of work. Undead females move fluidly and with barely leashed menace, and undead males have a nice, languid style that transforms frenetically when in combat. A few more faces would be nice, as would an option to poke through gear less.
- Trolls I like the troll model, think it's well animated and looks good, but the forest trolls from The Burning Crusade should definitely be an option here. Troll females need more faces and larger tusk options.
- Tauren Seriously, I will rain fire down upon you. Leave them alone. I definitely would like a taunka model with a fully animated face instead of the Tauren with a Big Face Mask version we have now, and a distinctive taunka female model.
- Orcs I'm on the fence here. I hate orc faces but think their models are well animated and wouldn't change their body proportions much at all. Orc females are very suitable in terms of fitting into the feel of a stocky race, but I'd like to see their shoulders broaden a bit; they look a bit like they come to a point.
- Humans Burn them to the ground, salt the earth. Complete do-over. Get rid of the monkey faces, potentially even reduce their muscles. Someone please figure out how to make a human female face that doesn't look like she just walked in on her parents in My Little Pony costumes taking turns riding each other across the living room.
- Gnomes Aside from more hair options and a face or two that looks less angular for males, I think gnomes look and move extremely well and would need minor tweaks at best.
- Dwarves For a race that catches a lot of flak, I think dwarves (both males and females) look exactly like what they are and give you an immediate sense of "Yep, those are dwarves all right" that I'd hate to see them lose. Be extremely careful here.
- Night elves Most players seem to hate their faces and hands, so consider ways to improve those, especially male night elves. Their overall body plan and animations, though -- those are very solid and require few tweaks, in my opinion.

Turn humans into belves. Problem solved.
Wolfrunner Jan 23rd 2012 7:35PM
That wouldn't solve the problem. Humans need a complete redesign. If I wanted to play a blood elf I would play a blood elf.
I played a human mage (male) since Vanilla and race-changed in Cata. Even back in Vanilla I, and many others, were unsatisfied with the human animations. Rossi, I think you might be surprised with how many of us who play humans wish Blizzard would change them. At least redo the run animation, for the love of the Light!

I'd like to say it is the models that have killed WOW for me. The same thing happened with Everquest2. The women look like unisex cones Gumbees with a couple of whacky hairstyles. If the models could be updated to the likes of Guild Wars, Rift, etc. I don't want to feel like a child playing Walt Disney long earred characters. It's funny like on the boxes of many of these games they have beautiful models...EQ the sexy, beautiful blond and gritty conan character types.

I totally agree with you about Tauren. They are my favourite race model, and I would make every class a Tauren if I could. Big cows o' doom!
VSUReaper Jan 23rd 2012 8:12PM
I like the way the turen are huge, but I don't like their idle animations and how sometimes they seem like a giant rectangle.
I want to see more details, flesh out the animations more, and make them look less blocky.
Don't mess with the size, but make bigger doors.

I think what it boils down to is that, generally speaking, a polish, rather than an out and out redo is what is in order. Whether or not the current dev staff has it in them, we'll see. One things for sure, we need BIGGER textures. A lot of the older character models have 128x128 textures, and it shows. They texture resolution needs to be tripled at least, 512x512 is a heck of a lot more real estate for fine details. We might also see, since Blizz is dropping support for older operating systems, the inclusion of detail inducing texture work like displacement maps, where the texture layer itself tells provides information which allows for the illusion of depth where there is none.

I agree. I play a lot of orcs, and I don't mind the body proportions or anything, but I think they just need a lot more polish. Updated textire, more idle animations, maybe a few new faces, etc.
For undead, I DO wish you could have an option of making the bones not poke through the armor.
loop_not_defined Jan 23rd 2012 5:32PM
This is my one pet peeve with Tauren. I love the proportions and general shape - that's fine. It just feels like there's no DETAIL, for males or females. The faces are nearly indistinguishable from each other. Color patterns hardly play any role, since they almost all work from the same base color (brown). The one defining characteristic is horns...and only sort of. Considering horns are the one place you'd find jewelry on a minotaur character (next to the nose ring), I'm rather surprised such options don't exist.
Homeschool Jan 23rd 2012 6:07PM
I almost entirely agree with this opinion. The biggest difference between, say, an Orc and a Goblin is NOT that the Goblin is short while the Orc is bulky. It's that Goblins look like creatures while Orcs look like the Halloween costume we made out of cardboard. (Right down the the weird corners and edges and splotchy paint.)
I'd like to see four things:
1) Higher polygon count
2) Higher texture detail
3) More detail complexity in the animations (watch a Goblin's face while it does things like casting or idling)
4) More options for customization
Regarding #4, it bothers me that you can't customize things like their figure. Want a less muscular Human? Too bad. A lean Tauren? Nope. A roly-poly Goblin? Sorry. We get a few options that let us pick face style and color, and a haircut/color (which we can change at a barber, so would we even miss it here?) And once you've got on your armor, those generally don't matter anymore. It would be nice to have some options that actually let you define a lasting appearance, even if it was merely height/weight. (Although, now that I think about it, an "attitude" option that let you pick a set of animations would also be nice... Let me finally have the "Distinguished" Worgen for spouting British jargon and Shakespearean prose.)
LynMars Jan 23rd 2012 6:19PM
This so much. More options, more detail, more polish. A few more skin/fur colors, more patterns, facial tattoos--A lot of people like to RP as Dark irons, or Wildhammers, or the various kinds of Trolls and Tauren. The ability exists in the game engine, make the options available to players for greater variety.
It'd be nice to select eye color independent of face, too. A few more faces for each race would be nice.
I also wouldn't mind the slider options like what SWTOR has; it's not too complicated, not too much strain to give a couple options for height/build, and gives characters more options than just "uber buff muscle man!" and women all the same general shape; mages and priests have the same builds as warriors and paladins, and it's one of the biggest complaints I see (and feel myself).
Jorges Jan 23rd 2012 6:24PM
That's what I'm thinking too. Updating doesn't mean changing, it means getting better. Just rise the polycount, add better textures and for the love of god, make armor pieces look like they have depth. The only pieces that our characters wear that actually have polygons are helmets, shoulders and weapons. The rest is just textures.
Also, this is what I mean to getting better: http://beyondthetree.wordpress.com/
Of course, Blizzard can do it even better.
Nathanyel Jan 23rd 2012 6:45PM
Tauren nose rings need to become a character option independent from the "beard", with that option applying to feral forms as well. Just so that I can turn it OFF for my cat :|
Cennic Jan 23rd 2012 8:20PM
I definitely agree with adding better textures and resolution, even more options for faces and hairstyles. In fact I'm not even going to say that I don't agree with having different body types, as it would be really cool. Unfortunately, it would also be an incredible amount of work for, ultimately, a small benefit. In order to make different body types, they would literally have to go through and change every piece of armor in the game to work with every single body type and not just every character model like it is now. So while it WOULD be cool, it would be a massive undertaking that I just don't see happening anytime soon, if at all. Other than making armor more detailed, most if not all of the other proposed changes would only apply to the character models themselves, and not virtually every item currently in the game whose aesthetic is determined by the character model.
I suppose there might be some way to make the armor model automatically adjust itself to fit each body type or something, as I'm guessing thats similar to how it works in games where you can fine tune a body type and not just have limited choices like "Thin, Average, Fat" and "Short, Average, Tall". But even that would be quite a project and again, for not a whole lot of gain. Something like that would be along the lines of the old world revamp.
So really the question is, would you rather have a new expansion that actually adds a plethora of things to do in the game, or be able to give your new night elf a beer gut? Personally, as fun as it would be to point and laugh at a night elf with a beer gut, I'd still choose having things to do over having things to look at that I'd only notice for a week after they were implemented anyway.
Snuzzle Jan 23rd 2012 8:26PM
This. Folks, none of the models are getting the worgen-in-alpha redesign treatment. They're getting the vanilla-to-cataclysm goblin treatment. Or, if you prefer, the Thrall-Jaina-Illidan-etc treatment. More polish, more polys, more flow and more detail.
Personally, as a long time player of female tauren (in fact, I played femtaur exclusively until I fell in love with female goblins) I can't wait to see what they do with her. As long as she doesn't get the female worgen makeover, that is.
I love the slightly clumsy way she moves, the way she almost looks like she's going to faceplant when she runs, and the fact that her entire model just screams "Solid and strong." Every animation is deliberate and controlled. I hope they don't lose that feel in the revamp, because I know she's far from a fan favorite model.

If you want to see what the WOW models in this game are supposed to look like, go to the website of the Sons of the Storm, and check out Samwise's gallery. Sure, the other Sons all have a bit of the flavor too, but Samwise has them nailed, and no matter how great WOW get's graphic wise, it will look more and more like his drawings.
Night Elf males are supposed to have big hands and feet. I wish Night Elf females had a bald or mohawk option to better show their feral tribal nature.
All the vanilla races mostly just need high resolution skins, and more polygons to smooth out their jagged areas and edges, with some more love given to the facial details and animations.
Then some minor tweaking to the placement of the body parts and posture. All you have to do is be very careful to maintain every single face and hair style already in the game but with a more polished look.
People are are expecting brand new revamped interpretations don't seem to have their finger on the pulse here.
xvkarbear Jan 23rd 2012 4:44PM
What feral tribal nature?
Night elves aren't tribal at all.
Reis Jan 23rd 2012 5:00PM
So.....someone hasn't read the KYL about NElves being evolved/changed Trolls. :)
loop_not_defined Jan 23rd 2012 5:34PM
Having evolved from Trolls still doesn't make Night Elves tribal. It makes Trolls tribal. This is one of the primary differences between the two: tribal vs. modern.
Scunosi Jan 23rd 2012 5:40PM
@xvkarbear
I don't know about tribal, but the original Night Elves were at least depicted as much more feral than the current serene, almost stereotypical elves we have in-game today. Or at the very least the females were, since they had to take over almost every non-Druid class while the men worked in the Dream.
I don't hear it often, but quite a few people would like to see a return, if only for the women maybe, to those more vicious roots. Especially now that Tyrande is looking more and more like arm-candy and less like a wartime leader.
Killik Jan 23rd 2012 6:20PM
That'd be a picture of a female troll.
