Two Bosses Enter: Echo of Jaina vs. Morchok

At the beginning of season 3 of Two Bosses Enter, I changed the rules a tiny bit, finally allowing raid bosses to be a part of the competition. While some have brought up that the power differentials between a 5-man dungeon boss and a 10- or 25-man are an unfair dynamic, I counter those statements with only this: It's my fake arena show, not yours! Jaina vs. Morchok, go!
On the last thrilling and chilling episode of Two Bosses Enter, the lost and angry essence of Baine Bloodhoof utterly wiped out the satyr guard Peroth'arn from the Well of Eternity. It wasn't even close. You guys and gals love your tauren heroes, and I will not deny you the championing of one of your prolific and hooved role models. The Echo of Baine was well represented in the comments, as we will soon see after checking out this week's combatants.
Are you ready for a serious rumble between two powerhouses? Master of the arcane versus an elemental monstrosity -- one is going home next week.

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

Night has fallen on the Dragonblight. The Destroyer's once-hulking corpse forever bleeds molten fire. Deep within the Azure Dragonshrine walks the spiritual remains of one of the greatest masters of the arcane -- Jaina Proudmoore, daughter of the late Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore and leader of Theramore. Barely contained within her form is a broken and wracked remembrance of the leader once alive.
The Echo wields Jaina's signature staff, which must first be reconstituted from its 16 pieces before Jaina's spirit materializes. Fire, arcane, and frost are all at her disposal.
Jaina is already an interesting character who has been around in Warcraft lore for a long time now. That being said, it looks like Jaina's Cataclysm journey is only the beginning. With her own novel by Christie Golden coming out this year, we can expect a lot from this powerful mage.
The Echo of Jaina's abilities include:
- Blink Jaina blinks.
- Frost Blades Jaina will fire three large frost blades that fan out in front of her.
- Frostbolt Volley Frostbolts erupt from Jaina's hands, dealing damage and slowing movement speed.
- Flarecore Echo of Jaina throws a Flarecore ember on the ground near her enemies, which explodes if it is touched. If the embers are not triggered in 10 seconds, the Flarecore explodes for massive damage.
- Pyroblast Jaina winds up a huge damaging fireball and launches it at a target, dealing heavy damage.

In this corner lurks the great Morchok, a massive elemental that leads the assault against the foundation of Wyrmrest Temple itself. After the fall of Ragnaros and Al'akir, Deathwing's elemental allies quickly lost large numbers and support as their leaders were dispatched and the elemental planes once again belonged to natural chaos. Morchok, like most of those in Deathwing's shadow, has been broken so completely that he now believes the end of the world is the only way to break his painful bonds.
With the advent of the Raid Finder, more and more players are experiencing raid encounters than ever. The fact that most people in game these days can tell me what happens during the final Deathwing fight is pretty revolutionary in MMO terms. Morchok is the first raid boss to enter the tournament, but please do not let his raid boss status skew your power levels stuff too much.
For raid bosses, I will be using the Raid Finder abilities and boss kits that each combatant posseses. Morchok, for instance, will not have his Korchom ability, which changes the Morchok encounter for the heroic difficulty; Raid Finder mode is it, folks.
The great Morchok's abilities include:
- Stomp Morchok stomps the ground real hard, squishing things.
- Crush Armor Morchok slams his target, dealing extra damage and reducing the target's armor.
- Resonating Crystal A crystal is conjured that explodes after 12 seconds. The damage is split between the nearest enemies.
- Furious Morchok enrages at 20% health, increasing his damage and attack speed.
- The Earth Consumes You! Morchok pulls all of his enemies toward him, inflicting damage. As Morchok pulls his enemies, Earth's Vengence calls forth earthen shards from the ground to block the terrain. Black Blood of the Earth begins to spew forth, covering the terrain and inflicting damage over time.

Baine Bloodhoof, son of the great Cairne Bloodhoof, easily trounced his demonic opponent by a solid number of votes. Many readers put some great stories, including some longer ones that I'm going to quote but not paste in full, so check those links.
Reader Fletcher had to remind us all of the practical problems we deal with every day. Save a PUG -- dodge the eyes:
It's almost sad that I can feel the pain just oozing off Fletcher's post. Let's all sit in silence for a moment.Pugs have shown me that the most likely outcome is that Peroth'arn fails to dodge the dragon mobs, pulls aggro, runs to the rest of his party, dies, and wipes the group.
Quaza's long tale of the matchup was fantastic. You can read the whole thing here, and it's definitely worth a read. Some of my favorite excerpts from the post are below.
The Echo of Baine and Peroth'arn really get into it:
The finale was the best part, as I am sure you will agree:Leaping and landing on the rock with the beast - Baine, he remembered - Pero'than dips his claws in the lava and begins a punch filled with the raw power of molten earth. But the tauren has tricks of his own. Stepping back to dodge the blow, Baine dips his axe in the pool behind him and slashes at his opponent, slicing tufts of satyr hair off Pero'than's chest, and leaving a trail of smoke sprouting from the shortened fur.
Pero'than notices a shift in Baine's footing, and steps to the side to avoid hiss obvious kick. That would have worked well, except that the kick wasn't aimed at Pero'than, it was aimed at the extremely fragile rock beneath both of them.
The rock shatters.
Wonderful. This is the kind of stuff that really shines. Reader Rai also had a terrifically written piece with Peroth'arn as the victor, besting Baine by exploiting his sadness and weakness at the end of all things. Read the full post here, but here's one of my favorite parts:"This was supposed to be an easy fight!" Pero'than roars. "You're just a filthy animal." As if to prove his point, Baine snorts and paws the ground with his hoof.
"Now you will KNOW POWER!"
Pero'than's magic lifts Baine up as he begins to consume the apparition. But as luck would have it, he lost his footing and fell to one knee, shattering his concentration. Realizing his mistake, Pero'than fades into the shadows, and sends out his demonic eyes to search for the ghost, who seemingly vanished along with him.
Baine suddenly appears, though not die to his magic. He shatters the platform beneath Pero'than's feet, bringing renewed agony as lava burns skin already burnt. Feeling weak, Pero'than swims to the only platform not yet used (the one closest to shore).
"This filthy animal says hi."
Once more, the full force of Baine's totems slam into Perothan, knocking him back to the molten debris. Searing pain engulfs Pero'than, who knew that he spent much longer than is healthy in the lava. He blacks out.
"Whoever you let down, whoever you lost...you're going to fail as miserably as they did!" Peroth'arn cackled, casting an incantation and causing a fireball, constructed from fel magic and dangerous flame, to land directly on Baine, burning at the apparition's form. Baine howled in rage, raising his axe high and smashing down towards Peroth'arn, who stepped backwards nimbly. The axe struck the stone and the platform beneath them both disappeared into the lava. Hissing, Peroth'arn endured the heat and swiftly leapt onto another platform, turning to face where Baine had stood: there was nothing. He looked at his claws, which were red with heat, looking back up with only a moment to spare before the totem hit him in the face.
"Cheap trick!" the satyr groaned, climbing to his feet as the ferocious apparition clomped out of the lava, continuing his assault. His axe was red with molten fury, and one hit was enough to tell Peroth'arn that unless he did something, his minutes were numbered.

I'm not really very good at figuring out tactical advantages one opponent has over another, but Morchok is simply far too big and slow to avoid Jaina's Frost Blades, which leaves him frozen and at her mercy to do with as she will until the ice melts.
Deathknighty Jan 25th 2012 8:06AM
Actually, I'm pretty sure he's an ice elemental, I've seen it said in a variety of places, it's just that he's a copy and paste of a stonecore boss and they couldn't find the time to even recolour him.
So, yeah, frost mage vs ice elemental.
Fletcher Jan 23rd 2012 8:23PM
I got a mention! Fame is finally mine!
WRT the current match-up, this is interesting. Jaina's Blink makes her mobile - she can certainly dodge Black Blood of the Earth. Morchok, on the other hand, is too big to dodge Frost Blades, and probably too slow to get to the Flarecores in time (presuming he notices it; pugs have shown me that this is not always a sure thing). Unless his Stomp is capable of detonating the Flarecore at range? It *is* quite stompy.
On the other hand, Jaina *is* quite squishy, as a cloth-wearing mage. She's not equipped or skilled to take a beating from Morchok up close. How well can she kite him? She's faster and can attack at range. He's stronger and can chuck crystals at her. It becomes something of a battle of attrition.
Ultimately, I think Morchok can take enough of a beating to take Jaina down. Score one to Ozruk's big brother.
Robert Jan 23rd 2012 8:24PM
This battle might have been closer if Morchok wasn't this tier's loot pinata. Not only that, but a loot pinata that's so slow that when he first came out he could be effectively kited by a ranged. Hey, check that out, Jaina's not only a ranged, but does slowing attacks. Oh, and what's more, ranged can continue to dps Morchok while hiding behind those spikes during black blood of the earth.
Morchok does virtually no ranged damage, save for his crystal thing. His attacks only hit melee. Jaina's attacks slow and/or stun. Jaina can blink when he gets close. Morchok's probably too slow to get to the flamecore in time.
On paper, there's absolutely no reason why Jaina should lose to Morchok. The only possible excuse I could think of is if Jaina was an idiot and used poor strategy. Jaina is a mage. Morchok is a rock. I think Jaina wins in the intelligence department.
Jaina wins. Even if you hate her, try telling me realistically how she'd lose to Morchok?
Deathknighty Jan 25th 2012 8:11AM
I dunno, maybe he trips on her?
He's pretty big, there are a multitude of ways he could squish her.
Vaniya Jan 23rd 2012 8:34PM
Please, pleeeeease let Jaina win! I mean, Tyrande will clearly win the whole thing, but Jaina is pretty strong. Here is how it will go:
Morchok lumbered up to the Azure Dragonshrine, unsure of how he got to where he was. Wasn't his master still attacking that tower over there, instead of idly laying... Through it? Morchok didn't quite care, for he had been walking around for several hours when he saw bright lights coming from the shrine.
Once there, he accidentally stepped on something hard that made a crunching sound. A whisper went through his mind, just a gentle "who's there?" Morchok lifted his foot, and was surprised when the fragments floated away, swirling in the air with other shards. Another flash of light sundered the air, and there stood a puny human.
"You Seek to halt an avalanche. I will bury you!" lumbered Morchok.
"I will defend this shrine with my life!" screamed the woman, who immediately shot a ball of fire at the elemental.
This did little but annoy Morchok, who went to crush her. His foot came down, but only hit empty space! "why won't you give up?!" she cried!
Morchok, furious, employed his earthen powers to pull her to his feet, where he started seeping the black blood of the earth. Before the woman could be overwhelmed, she sent blades of frost at her foe, freezing him and his blood. She blinked away, just in time for Morchok to break free!
He threw down a crystal that was sending off a high pitched sound, and Jaina quickly sent a pyroblast at it, shattering it. Fed up with this rabble, Jaina sent off frosty projectiles at her enemy, and he chilled, unable to move any faster than a crawl. She summoned several growing spheres of pure energy around him.
"My own invention. I call them Flarecores." she said cooly.
"This is impossible. I am inv-" Morchok started to say, but he was cut off by the massive explosion that turned him into a fine powder.
With her duty completed, the Echo of Jaina Proudmoore closed her eyes and faded into oblivion, her staff once again shattering into hundreds of pieces.

Morchok
Crush armor, resonating crystal, win
Randomize Jan 23rd 2012 8:40PM
Well, considering Jaina can just throw a flarecore far away and nuke at morchok while he runs those down, I'd say it's an easy win for her. She's doubtlessly going to be able to get behind a pillar for black blood of the earth and continue to nuke him while he sits there and does nothing. Even assuming he can dodge her frost blades, he's just not quick enough to stop flarecores and keep meleeing her.
wagonga4 Jan 23rd 2012 9:00PM
I love how the Jaina supporters let her use her abilities in any order, any how, and with no cooldown and spamable. So, what if, by the same rules, Morchok spams resonating crystals and keeps pulling her in when she tries to reach them? I'm pretty sure Morchok would win if there's no CD involved.
Even with CD, ignoring player-like actions (eg, kiting, shooting from between pillars), Jaina's Blink CD is on a pretty long CD and she can only use frost blades immediately afterwards. So, if Morchok pulls her in after she blinks, she's kind of stuck there for a while, while she gets chewed up by Black Blood of the Earth.

You know who spends a lot of time reading books? Mages.
What are books made out of? Paper.
What's Morchok made from? Rock.
Paper wraps rock, so this one goes to Jania.

I think that Jaina can handle the black blood fine. But all her kiting ability is for naught if she has to stand still next to the resonating crystal. I reckon Morchok is pretty good at stomping out flarecores. She'd probably get him him into single digits HP wise but I reckon she falls first.
Ballmung Jan 23rd 2012 10:18PM
This week the only limiting factor for the arena is finding one big enough for Morchok. There however seems to also be the question of how often spells can be spammed so for the sake of balance it will be as often as they are in normal groups. Sorry blink spam fans.
Jaina does appear to have the advantage of intelligence being a powerful mage but remember Morchok is an ancient earth elemental and never discount age. That said we should consider speed a bit and the matter of flarecore. With normal fight parameters in there Morchok probably won't be hitting all of them if at all. Too busy stomping and squishing Jaina with stomp and crush armor. Since this is mano-y-mano Jaina is gonna to be taking that double stomp damage. Jaina is also getting that stacking debuff by herself (no mirror images remember). Now I've had the mishap of the other tank thinking he was dps on his fight and I was forced to take 9 stacks of that debuff. 90% armor reduction! Thats more damage taken leading to a faster kill. Yes Jaina can blink and then use frost blades. But what if Morchok uses Earthen Vortex right after? Oops! Or perhaps a resonating crystal? Even if Jaina blinks to the crystal she still gets damage when it goes off.
Morchok is an ancient earth elemental determined to crush Wyrmrest temple and any in his way of that goal. Time twisted Jaina is an echo of her former self. The Jaina of now and certainly the one in Mists can fell Morchok, but not the shell of her in this fight.
Mike Jan 23rd 2012 10:20PM
Frost mage more powerful than any player could hope to be vs. warrior with even fewer closing methods than the standard warrior has? I see this one being a straightforward trounce that leaves the IRL Morchok breaking his keyboard and accidentally murdering his entire neighborhood with an enraged Black Blood of the Earth.
Rai Jan 23rd 2012 10:24PM
The giant lumbering stone monstrosity lurched towards Wyrmrest Temple, stomping at the road beneath his heels and leaving large marks as he trampled the stone. He grunted with each footstep, moving closer and closer to the temple. Overhead, dragons engaged in battle. Hundreds of smaller elementals engaged dragonkin across the snow-covered battlefield, but Morchok pressed onwards, moving closer and closer to his destination. He was less than thirty seconds from the entrance when it happened. There was a flash of light and the sky turned a dark purple colour. The dragons, dragonkin and elementals disappeared and it looked like he was alone. Morchok turned slowly to face the long road behind him, only to discover there was a ghost stood behind him. The Echo of Jaina sized him up and he grunted.
"No mortal shall turn me from my task!"
With a solemn, emotionless expression, Jaina looked away from him.
"Such violence. Such rage. I am sorry."
Morchok stampeded towards her. Jaina raised an arm and conjured three blades of frost, which travelled down the road towards the giant. Morchok, being a giant, was hit by all three and frozen into a giant ice block. Jaina walked towards him, continuing to look solemn. There was a roar and the ice broke after a few seconds. Morchok approached her and stomped on her astral form, causing her to scream in pain. She muttered a word and an orb of flame shot into the air over Morchok's head, and landed on the ground. Thinking nothing of it, Morchok continued his assault. Before the third stomp, Jaina sighed and Blinked, moving backwards away from him. Suddenly, the untouched flarecore detonated and bathed him in searing flames, causing him to grunt in pain.
"I apologise, but I cannot let you succeed...so I must consume you with flames..." Jaina sighed.
"The earth consumes you!" Morchok yelled, as the ground around him began to whirl into the air. Jaina attempted to channel a pyroblast, but was swept off her ghostly feet before she could launch it, being hit by the rocks and dumped at the feet of the monstrosity. Her frown soon turned to agony as a thick black liquid began to gush from Morchok and spread out across the ground. She turned to run as large crystals grew out of the ground, narrowly avoiding the ooze and darting behind one to avoid their flow. She took a few steps back and fired a pyroblast at Morchok, who took the full hit but continued channeling his spell. When he finished, the crystals disappeared and he began to lurch towards her, only to be hit by another set of ice blades and frozen once more. He screamed with rage, breaking out of the block of ice and taking a frostbolt volley to the face. As he continued his assault, despite slower, he summoned a resonating crystal on the ground. Jaina looked at it and a line of energy extended towards her.
"Flee and perish..." Morchok threatened. Jaina took the hint and Blinked once more, reappearing by the crystal. She closed her eyes as it detonated, but opened them once more afterwards, surprised at the lack of effect from her close proximity. Morchok reached her once more and continued his assault, despite the occasional pyroblast to the face. Jaina was receiving fiercer and fiercer blows with each stomp though, and she knew it. She fired another flarecore into the air, which landed next to them. The giant, remembering what happened before, took a couple of steps and stomped on it with his foot, preventing the explosion.
"Puny human! Your magic cannot protect you from the very earth itself!" Another resonating crystal appeared across the road. Jaina ran towards it, pausing only to take another stomp. She fired off another set of frost blades at the giant, before reaching the crystal just as it detonated. Morchok broke free of his icy prison once more.
"Your ice magic only delays the crushing of your body!"
"I am faster than you, giant. If I wished to obliterate you, I would not give you these precious minutes."
"The rocks tremble..."
Morchok whipped up another vortex of earth, pulling Jaina close again. She glared at him.
"......and you drown in the hate of The Master."
"I take relief in that your passing will end your pain" Jaina announced, clicking her fingers and casting a spell.
She smiled softly, then Blinked once more out of the black blood reappeared between two large crystals at the edge of the spell. Morchok could see her face while he channelled the spell, unable to move. She was pointing at something.
"All will be..." he begun, but then he spotted the glow of the flarecore at his feet. He tried to move to stomp on it, but the spell he was casting was using up all of his concentration and he couldn't.
"...dust." Jaina announced. The core detonated and the searing flames engulfed Morchok.
"Imp...ossible..." Morchok cried out, "This cannot...be..."
The giant fell to the ground, lifeless and the ooze faded. The Echo of Jaina turned and walked down the road, across the plains of the snow and out of sight.

If there is something that the first season of cata bosses taught us, is that you don't mess with the REAL champion, Ozruk.
I'll vote for his little brother, Morchok.
And wait a sec, is the heroic mode of Morchok (Split in two) allowed?

It's simple...Jaina's boyfriend dumped her to try and take over the world. She's pissed. The end.
ScottyD Jan 24th 2012 12:34AM
Rock is sort of highly resistant to fire and ice. I doubt even Jaina could safely handle a fireball that was hot enough to actually damage stone, and rocks don't just shatter when they get cold so Morchok pretty much has the highest resistance to the other elements that is possible. Most of the people defending Jaina are explaining the fight in the sense that she's just spamming the abilities that would save her like the freeze or flamecore. Well if she doesn't have cd's then neither does Morchok and he could just keep pulling her back into the blood over and over no matter how many times she blinks away so she wouldn't even be able to fight since the pull disables you and the blood would just burn her down.
wagonga4 Jan 24th 2012 2:01AM
I agree :D
Almost everybody is saying "Jaina can cast ice blades and freeze him in the spot" then "Morchok can't move while he casts Black Blood". I'm sorry, I didn't know Jaina could cast Ice Blades without blinking a long way away, making them spread out a lot, also moving away from a possible resonating crystal.
If Jaina can spam stuff quickly, Morchok can spam resonating crystals and that consuming Earth thing. Jaina can't get away, is CC'd almost permanently and can't get close to the crystals. Sure Jaina can blink away but since Morchok's thing has no range requirement...
