Breakfast Topic: What NPC do you miss the most?

While I was writing last Sunday's Know Your Lore, I started thinking about the world of Azeroth and how much it's changed with Cataclysm. I think one of the most poignant moments of the new expansion for me was playing through the new Darkshore, honestly. Darkshore was one of the zones I leveled in with my very first character way back in vanilla -- and to be perfectly honest, the zone totally stank. I hated almost every minute of it. The running back and forth was ridiculous, and please don't get me started about the Tower of Althalaxx or The Sleeper Has Awakened.
Yet despite the pains of leveling up in the area, despite the soul-crushing annoyance of Deep Ocean, Vast Sea and other quests, I was sort of attached to these NPCs that were sending me on all these wretched missions. And when I played through Darkshore in Cataclysm and saw so many of those old faces dying or gone, it was almost heartbreaking in a way. Which I'm sure is exactly as intended, but there's a part of me that wistfully wishes I could see those old faces again.
I think the NPC I miss the most is Mr. Smite from The Deadmines, pictured above. I mentioned it briefly in Know Your Lore, too. The Deadmines was the first instance I ever ran, and the moment I blew open the doors and first set eyes on a pirate ship in the middle of a mountain was one I really won't ever forget. Part of that moment was Smite's bellow of alarm and the subsequent rush of pirates. Plus Smite's encounter, in which he Warstomped and stunned players long enough to go dig up a bigger, better weapon for smushing, was one of the more memorable encounters from the vanilla instances.
Is this something you've thought about? Are there any NPCs you were particularly attached to? In an expansion where so many are long gone and will never been seen again, which NPCs do you miss the most?

the nostalgia is kickin in :( i want old thrall where all the proffession shit is now,
not that garrosh kid where the bank was.

my guild has been running a lot of older content recently, filling in achievements that weren't complete. The older thrall model is kind of better than the new one. I realize he's a Shaman now, but does that mean he's got to look all.. not Thrall?

yeah... so I can lead a raid to kill him. Thus far this expo I've had to save him twice, get him married, and in the end he takes all the glory just for shoving me from platform to platform (with about a 5% failure rate). The things I do for loot...

There was an Orc in Azshara, I'm afraid I forget her name. She sent you on quests to collect Highborn tablets from the ruins and had you deliver them to the interested parties. She claimed to have been posted in Azshara for turning down a superior officers advances but was going to make the most of it. She was an interesting character and I had hoped to see more of her in Cata but she's just gone now.

Gah I so know what you mean about Darkshore. It was my first leveling zone too and it breaks my heart when I go through there, especially the Lordanel quests.
Man talk about gut wrenching :/
Was so sad finding NPCs and one to be dead...the other to be alive.....the next dead, then gathering the souls of all your old friends to fight that elemental.
I think the dead hypogryphs around the flight master was the saddest part of it.

omg yeah. I too leveled through Darkshore on my first ever toon. When the shattering hit, I took my NE druid there to see what the cataclysm had done to it. I just flew around, soo sad, and I didn't even know what happened to everyone yet. Next on my list was to roll a NE mage so I could quest through there and find out exactly what happened. I read EVERYTHING. Well worth it. Sad in places, but very worth it.

I miss the NPC's there, too. Many people disliked the zone, but I liked the town. The fetch quests SUCKED, but the NPC's had become familiar. Knowing you literally get to see who lived and who died was a bit much. Gubber Blump still is missing. He was a friendly Dwarf who just loved fishing. He would teach you fishing for free, had a simple quest which rewarded you with the first +Fishing pole, and he sent you a letter a day later thanking you again and giving you a free bauble. How could you not love that?
I was running thru there on the night before Catacylsm, trying to get the old Furbolg rod on a character before the servers went down, and it would be gone forever (the old one.) Never made it. Time ran short, I got lost, and didn't have the time to finish, so I just hearthed. I knew all the places I ran by would be different after the expansion.
I was always amused by people relating how much they hated "Deep Ocean, Vast Sea", because if you knew the trick, it was simple. You could click the chests thru the hulls of the ships. Then they fixed it.
Outside of the NPC's in Darkshore, I would have to say one of my most missed NPC's is Mr. Smite.

@Vagrant
Totally agree. I played that zone first on my 80 at the time, just before the expansion hit.
I hated that zone so much, it kept me from playing a NE. This time though, the zone made me feel. It was so moving, everything had a sense of urgency.
And then your sent to find Grimclaw.
Even now, I'm getting misty eyed just thinking about it.

Darkshore, absolutely. I always get "Normandy"-vibes - Normandy I in Mass Effect 2, that is - from Darkshore.
Calaana Jan 24th 2012 8:26AM
Smite, easily. There's not even a contest there. One of the best characters, voices and fights(however easy) all in one? That's like time-lord enforced winning there.
Second for me are actually still in the game, but I don't see them anymore - the fighting belf and draenei that moved from shat to dal. They were always amusing.
Third is the little gnome that turned the lights on in dal.
... and I just realised why I didn't like the cata "world" much.. thanks, I'm gonna go be depressed about that again for a while.

Jaadar and Asric still exist! They randomly spawn at the Darkmoon Faire now, though I was heartbroken to see that they have no banter now - they're emoting a conversation to each other, but there's nothing for the player to read. A bittersweet surprise, for sure.

I named my female cat Mr. Smite because I liked him so much. This was before I knew he was going to disappear in Cataclysm =(
Arrowsmith Jan 24th 2012 8:15AM
NPC I miss the most? Hmm. I'd have to say Magni Bronzebeard, the OG Dwarf King.
NPC I LOVE the most? Caretaker Weston in Stromgarde, cause we have the same name. :D
Prelimar Jan 24th 2012 9:49AM
Magni for sure. he wasn't my king, but he was the king i defended with pride, not just out of duty.
Noyou Jan 24th 2012 10:37AM
Uncle Magni. Going to go visit him as soon as I log in. Bring him some ale :)
LordVashtal Jan 24th 2012 8:21AM
Though he's not really gone, persay, I miss Cro Threadstrong and his tireless war on the vagrant fruit cart. It's one of those nice touches that Cata didn't really have, and this saddens me. At least I can take heart buying an apple from him to smash on the alts I send through Shat.
