Another interesting news piece from Massively in the past few days that would be relevant to WoW Insider's readers is this article:

Titan may have product placement in it, judging by that job listing. Kinda tarnishes Titan's image a little in my eyes. But I'm high on TOR right now so Blizzard isn't high on my list, so I'll admit bias. But I know gamers in general hate product placement in their games, so this can't be too pleasing.

There are MANY games with in game advertisements. Like, did you know that in Battlefield 2142, there was a monitoring system that you had downloaded so that when you looked at an advertisement in the game, it would track how long you looked at it, what it was and when? Every other Battlefield game after that had it.

It depends on the game. For those of us who play sports games, NOT having product placement would be weird. Imagine a racing game that had no brand name cars, no brand-name advertising banners. It would be really weird and empty. Or if they used fictional ones, that's always strange too. Like that family guy episode where they were using slightly altered names like "McDaniels," "Burger Queen," "Flame Broiled Bopper," "Chicken McFingers," "Fresh Fries" (Quagmire: "Oh, c'mon, they don't own "french fries!"). Imagine a sign at a sports even that said "Cucu Coola" or something. It's kinda jarring.
In a fantasy RPG or MMO, I do concur however, product placement would not feel right... unless that fantasy RPG or MMO happened to be placed in the current time frame. Also, if product placement helps make it f2p, and appears fitting in the environment, sure, why not, go for it.

@Alex Have you started on MOBA Dick yet? When can we expect beta?

Guild Wars 2 has Mesmers... sadly my WoW days are now over.

GW2 is basically the way for me to be able to play two MMOs without having two subscriptions. THAT'S probably the only real reason that I plan to buy it.
