The Daily Quest: Something old, something new
WoW Insider's on a Daily Quest to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining

After nearly a year of fantastical landscapes torn apart by the havoc of Deathwing's return, I think I can safely say, I'm kind of tired of seeing the world torn apart. Though you can destroy the world in an instant, you can't really say the same for putting it back together again. It makes me wonder if we'll ever see an Azeroth that is healed -- one that has finally recovered from the earthquakes and devastation, one that shows signs of repair. I'm guessing something like that would be a full-scale project the size of Cataclysm itself, however, so I'm not holding my breath. Still ... I kind of miss the tranquil forests of Ashenvale. Being able to run from one end of The Barrens to the other. A Stranglethorn Vale without a giant sinkhole in the middle of it, and a Darkshore minus the tornado.
Today we've got a pretty interesting post about that old feeling everyone is missing, as well as a couple of other interesting ideas and subjects.

- Tusks and All looks at the good old days, nostalgia, and why those good old days won't necessarily make a return.
- A Sunnier Bear has an interesting idea for bears and other druid forms in the upcoming Mists of Pandaria.
- Flavor Text Lore is embarking on an ambitious project that dives into examining Norse mythology and its presence in WoW -- and it sounds like a fascinating read.

What's the video about? Blocked in this GEMA-plagued country.

And now I'm sad. I miss all of the old world stuff that was destroyed =( especially Cairne.
Nomatoo Jan 25th 2012 2:33PM
...something borrowed, something blue. I feel a TARDIS would be very much appreciated in this situation!

Tusks and All got it right, people don't miss the actual game, which was tedious and (comparatively) badly designed, but the feeling they had in this new, vast world, exploring it with so few other players, which eventually became the "server community".
This feeling did not fade because of changes to the game, but because the game naturally got "less new" every patch. And despite server populations growing, groups that functioned over a longer period of time became smaller, the server community began to erode - long before Dungeon Finder, which I'd rather call a reaction to this development than its cause.

I dunno, I think the dungeon finder was very much a cause rather than an effect, but I can only attribute this to my personal experience.
Personally I really wish the LFD had an option so you would only get a group with people from your own server. Yes, I know I'd have a longer wait, but it would be worth it...

Darkshore =/= Westfall
I miss peaceful Azshara before the goblins got their grubby little mitts on it, and the Isle of Dread. It seems like there are so few areas that are untouched now. While I can see that as efficient from a design sense of make the most of the zones, I think there is something to be said for wide-open, unused spaces as well.
Shinae Jan 25th 2012 3:37PM
There are ever-present tornadoes in both Darkshore AND Westfall.
jazz.panther Jan 25th 2012 4:53PM
Pretty sure the author was referring to the BIG "tornado" (a.k.a. The Raging Chasm) that messed up Westfall, west of Sentinel Hill. The Cataclysm didn't really mess with Darkshore.
Anne Stickney Jan 25th 2012 4:59PM
...have you BEEN to Darkshore? I can assure you I was very much referring to that.
jazz.panther Jan 25th 2012 5:40PM
*inserts foot into mouth* Sorry, I was thinking of Darkshire in Duskwood. Amazing what a difference one letter makes! :\

I heartily agree with all....I especially miss the Ashenvale of the Elves. Orcs and Elementals ruined it.
I dont think every zone should be populated....Azshara's emptiness made it a haunting place to do a few quests or farm for resources.
Desolace on the other hand actually benefitted from the Cataclysm.

I'd be happy if they could at least let the poor people of Menethil Harbor put their sand bags away.

I miss it so. The world of azeroth before cataclysm felt large, expansive, mysterious and majestic. It doesn't have that feel for me anymore. When I run across the barrens and come to a dead end it just loses its expansive feel, when I run down the road in silverpine and see worgen and forsaken fighting and war wagons, it loses its mystery. When I run though ashenvale forest and see areas of it burned and other areas chopped right down, it loses its majesty. When I run though darkshore and see the land ripped apart, it loses the ethereal feel. When I come to thousend needles and see its flooded and need to get on a tug boat, it doesn't have the awe of looking up as the needles.
Cata did break azeroth, it broke whatever fundemental beauty the game once had to it.

I started playing a couple of weeks ago after almost a 4 year break, and I can't believe how much the game has changed. I had a level 70 warrior tank, and I had no idea what to do with him (I couldn't remember where anything was). So I decided to just start fresh. All the zones have a familiarity to them, but I certainly notice the differences. What I notice most, though, is how little interaction there is between people. I know I'm not running around where most of the end game stuff is, but I rarely come across ANYONE. Everything costs an exorbitant amount of money on the AH, and guilds seem to be, mostly, a joke. I still like the game itself, but it seems like the changes they made broke the community. Now it feels like a bunch of individuals playing near each other rather than a group of people playing together.

Am I missing something or has there been no updates to The Daily Quest since the end of January?
