Exclusive: Watch "Race to World First" documentary free through Feb. 3
The whole sprawling scene plays out onscreen in the feature-length documentary Race to World First -- and you can watch it free right here at WoW Insider now through Feb. 3. (The film is also available at RacetoWorldFirst.com for a small fee.)
The Looking for Group Productions film, begun back in the day when clawing to a top spot on raiding progression charts was perhaps at its cut-throat peak, follows a handful of top-tier WoW guilds in their sprint to the top. Producers John Keating and Zachary Henderson conducted some of the early interviews for Race two years ago at BlizzCon 2010's WoW Insider reader meetup, including familiar faces like WI Editor Adam Holisky and GM/actress/huntress extraordinaire Michele Morrow.
Get a peek at this film for free while you can right here at WoW Insider. Who knows what in-game challenges you might feel up to tackling after seeing that much fiery motivation in action?

"The podast guys" are from The Instance, another good WoW podcast to listen to with the WoW Insider Show. Turpster FTW!

I used to listen to The Instance a lot, it's lost a lot of it's appeal now that Randy left to go work for Blizz. It was actually going downhill before that.

Very nice documentary. Great to have some real insight into both the players involved in the top elite guilds competing for world firsts and how they operate. well done.
i wonder what these players do once the race to world first is done (inbetween the major patches) ? Other MMOs...?

One thing I noticed which I had an idea about before but really hit home here is that it seems all of the top guilds play Horde side. Other than all the fanboys giving meaningless responses like "Because the Horde are better" is there actually a reason why they all seem to choose to play horde at that level of raiding?
Martin Jan 27th 2012 3:09PM
I don't know about all classes, but I know that Trolls make the best hunters in the game (all other things being equal), so if enough other horde racials are better than the alliance counterparts, that might make a difference.

I'm not trying to start a flame war over which faction Blizzard favors or anything but with all of the talk from Devs etc about trying to reach/maintain parity wouldn't this be a sign that something is off? I mean if they are all playing Horde because of some actual advantage to playing those races for raiding then wouldn't that mean there is an inbalance between the factions at least from a raiding standpoint?

Thanks for posting this on WoW Insider. I think it's very well made and gives a good insight into what motivates world-first players.

Okay, Seriously, this is fubar. I cant believe people put WOW as the # priority in their lives. I play alot on my downtime from that place called WORK where i make a living. However, im so irked about that guy who said people will want to have their kids play video games instead of sports one day. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? That loser obviously couldnt handle a game of touch football in highschool of course he would say something as asinine as that.
I understand if its something you do all the time and you go for it. Realistically some of these people really have some messed up concepts. Why dont we all just become robots and stay glued to our computers instead of socialize outside of a WoW UI. We all belong in our own considered social circles, and finding one that fits you is great, but this is just outta whack. What if there were no computers, no video games? How would some of these people that take this to the next level cope with their lives? I mean just look at these players that are trying to justify themselves. No GF/BF, No JOB that can sustain self fufillment where they can safely say this game is NOT on their list of priorities. Almost No anything except for a nice computer and a box of frozen hotpockets. Live the lives you want to live, but making a video trying to justify these means is just plain ridiculous.
I mean if i saw on a resume that this guy had RAID LEADING EXP in a top guild in WC, I'd laugh at him. WoW does not reflect on RL situations. It doesnt prepare you for anything. All you do is theorycraft on how to down some boss that will always be the same when you come back it. If you die who cares. Doesnt exactly work that way in the REAL WORLD. If I invest money here for this company with these other people that agree, and LOSE IT ALL, I'm pretty sure said company will tell us to take our 25man Raid Leading and shove it where the sun don't shine, and of course you are all fired.
Sports vs Warcraft...Seriously that guy needs to get the hell off his computer and learn that sports will always dominate. I play alot of games all the time, same with sports. Honestly, watching this video makes me want to quit this game before it starts screwing with the next generation of kids. Time to take off your diapers and put on big boy pants.

Well, nothing like a sports fan putting down gaming. In my world, if you are not a gamer, you are nothing. I work in a high tech field, everyone around me is a gamer, and they all hate sports. We have LAN parties on Super Bowl Sunday to avoid it. I got my job by being a gamer, because I was well versed in tech. Sports does not always dominate. Most of the people I know avoid sports like the plague, and not because there is anything wrong with it, but they simply do not like it. Schools in my area have a hard time finding enough interested players, and have cut programs because of it. Do not get me wrong, someone who doesn,t work, because they want to play games might have an issue there, but I also know many generations of people who have never had a job, but will bet on the Super Bowl and play fantasy football til their mouse wears out. I'm sure there will always be sports fans, but they no longer control the universe. Geeks rule the world, Gamers control it. Get used to it.

Oh I see, you think im a typical jock and all i do is play sports. Well, ill admit i am a nerd to in the sense that i have 5 85s, 3 of which are raiders, 1 of which is heroic raiding. I do game alot, and i get my competitive edge from playing sports. It works differently for everyone sure, but sports always will have the dominated edge. It's undisputed. Take ALL gamers, theyll say sports suck. Take ALL Sports players, theyll say games are for weak dorks. Take the rest of the people and slightly mention WoW. Theyll look at you as if you are speaking another language. Take rest of people and slightly mention a few sports. They will know more about it and be more involved than with this game. You and everyone else who downvotes this and upvotes your statement are just another pile of stereotypical south park badass behind the computer desk. If technology ended today, All the hardcore 40h per week gamers would be last on the list of survivors. I suppose you think being a hardcore CoD player makes you unreal at actual warfare? Before you go ahead and say all warfare is stupid blah blah blah, what happends if you were drafted, or any of these people for that matter? Actually, id be glad to have you in there, gotta send in some kind of decoy in the front lines. Gamers dont control shit, Geeks definitely contribute to good and bad things of the world. There are no stadiums for gamers except for a flimsy table at blizzcon. Athletes make money, not gamers. Get used to it.
