The OverAchiever: The worst (maybe) holiday achievements

I've been getting a lot of comments and feedback from players recently over troublesome elder placement during the Lunar Festival (the one next to the Razor Hill flightmaster seems to be a particular issue -- more on this in a future article), and it spurred me to start thinking about problematic holiday achievements as a whole. Thing is, Blizzard's really put a lot of effort into its holidays over the past few years, and most of them are much less time-consuming and frustrating then they used to be.
So how many really troublesome holiday achievements are there these days, anyhow? Most of them didn't figure prominently in our evil achievements series (with one sterling exception), but I'll grant that not all of them are sunshine and roses.
But then of course, there's that one. Yes, that one -- the achievement shat into existence by Satan himself onto a bed of Ed Hardy clothing with bad Japanese pop music playing in the background. You know the one I'm talking about.
Honestly? The more I thought about it, the more I had to admit that just about every WoW holiday has seen marked improvement in the four years that I've been writing here at WoW Insider. I don't think we've got a lot to complain about. Most of the "difficult" achievements below owe their status to an element of RNG or almost-guaranteed untimely death accompanying them.
Except for that one.
Lunar Festival
The Lunar Festival's problems (to the extent that it has them) are more immediate for what I imagine are obvious reasons, but there's really no achievement here that's an insurmountable obstacle.
Having said that, running around to find all the elders is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Fox recently described the Lunar Festival as a never-ending Fed Ex quest, and the time investment required to finish it will presumably keep ratcheting up as the game adds more continents and zones through expansions. For my part, I always found it somewhat relaxing ... but then again, I also did it when just the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor were required.
My pick Elders of the Alliance and Elders of the Horde are the most troublesome, although I admit I'm biased. Yes, this is my bias, right up here as we start this article -- I do not like dying in order to get an achievement done, and there's a very high risk of death running into enemy cities. While enemy city infiltration has gotten much easier with flying mounts, I don't envy the poor Alliance bastards trying to reach the Orgrimmar Elder without one.
Love is in the Air
Be Mine! was the classic choice here, although it got much better after Blizzard tinkered with the drop rate after a huge rash of complaints. Otherwise, Love is in the Air is definitely a much-improved holiday overall, although I still heard from forlorn players who just never got the candies that they needed for the achievement, even post-fix.
My pick Fistful of Love is the obvious choice, although most of the class combinations here are quite common. The worst is probably trying to find a troll rogue, as all those of you who went nuts looking for one during Pilgrim's Bounty can already attest. It does seem like a cruel joke to make players look for the same underplayed race/class combination twice.
Noblegarden
This was a tough holiday when its retooled version debuted in 2009, mostly because every player and his brother was suddenly camping every egg spawn. I wound up having a bored few hours myself sitting on the northeastern steps of the class trainer tent in Bloodhoof Village waiting for the same spawn to keep reappearing. These days, it's relatively easy (if admittedly a bit tedious) to get all the eggs you need.
My pick Shake Your Bunny Maker is really the only one here with the potential to drive a player batty, although it's definitely not as easy to find dwarf, orc, and tauren women. That, and if you really think about it, the achievement's kind of on the icky side in the first place.
Children's Week
Like this is even a contest? School of Hard Knocks. This is actually one of five holiday achievements that made our Top 25 list, and it clocked in at a very healthy #2. School of Hard Knocks is one of the very few things in this game with the ability to drive me into a towering rage. I cannot stand the design of this achievement. I hate that it gives complete asshats a means of griefing even the players from their own faction. And I really hate that doing it successfully means slipping past people who are actually trying to play to the demands of the Battleground. The best thing that can be said about School of Hard Knocks is that at least it makes you feel like you actually earned that damn proto-drake after all that you went through to get it.
This was literally the only achievement I had missing in the first year after the Wrath content patch hit. After being made completely miserable in a series of unproductive Battlegrounds with every player trying to do it and people sniping at each other when not griefing outright, I finally had enough, dropped out, and waited a year to try again. Judging from the hatred this achievement attracts, I wasn't the only one.
My pick Towering. Rage.
Midsummer Fire Festival
All things considered, the Midsummer Fire Festival is probably the least-changed holiday overall and also probably bears the most resemblance to the current Lunar Festival (i.e., running around the world getting items from specific locations, etc.). If you don't like running around to all the elders for the Lunar Festival, it won't suddenly get better during the Fire Festival.
My pick King of the Fire Festival is the obvious choice. However, Burning Hot Pole Dance -- now that you can't return Fire Festival clothing for a refund -- has attracted a lot of complaints, as it eats up so many Burning Blossoms that players might otherwise have used for novelty items and a pet.
Brewfest
Brew of the Year would have been the pick here if Blizzard hadn't removed it from the meta, but it's no longer a concern.
My pick Hmm. Nothing really comes to mind. Brewfest is probably WoW's most trouble-free holiday.
Hallow's End
Now that A Mask for All Occasions has been removed from the meta -- and made significantly easier this year anyway, as they're all buyable -- I'm scratching my head again. This is another Travel All Over the World holiday guaranteed to annoy players who don't like the Lunar Festival or Midsummer Fire Festival, but I really liked the 2011 version of Hallow's End, with new quests and a more engaging way to do Rotten Hallow.
My pick The only bad thing about the new version of Hallow's End is that there aren't more pets like the Feline Familiar and the Creepy Crate. Boxes of concentrated evil that follow you around and snack on nearby critters are high on my list of potential fighters for the pet battling system in Mists.
Pilgrim's Bounty
While not part of the year-long meta What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been, Pilgrim's Bounty is definitely one of the best additions to the holiday stable. A cheap and easy way to level cooking on multiple alts? Yes, please.
My pick Eh. Pilgrim's Peril comes closest, but it's one of the least invasive infiltration achievements. No real complaints here. You can make a case for the Turkinator in the first year that the holiday went live (and it's definitely a lot easier for some classes than others), but eh.
Winter Veil
I've always liked Winter Veil, but then again, who doesn't love presents? The modern incarnation of the Greench during the 2011 holiday also turned out to be pretty cool.
My pick Probably BB King and A-Caroling We Will Go if you count all achievements, but you don't actually have to do them for the meta. Of the required ones, With a Little Helper from My Friends is the standout, particularly if you're a feral druid. Either you have to respec in order to get the achievement done, or you'll run around Battlegrounds or Tol Barad ineffectually whacking at people with your melee weapon and heartily wishing that Blizzard could reverse its policy on costumes in forms.

With a little helper is where my feral tank/dps druid threw up her hands in disgust and stopped trying for the meta. I wasn't going to be able to put together an int set during the holiday and wasn't willing to run around being useless.
Draelan Jan 27th 2012 1:30AM
I'm actually kind of surprised to see so many people convinced that there's no way for a feral druid to do achievements like Little Helper without respeccing or meleeing in caster form like an idiot... There's actually a very simple way to do it, and it is my preferred way even on other classes...
Use a vehicle. I personally use the cannons up on top of the keep in Isle of Conquest. It gives you a good view of the surrounding area, you can attack and kill enemy players from a great distance for credit towards your achievement, and you're far less likely to be ganked in the first couple minutes before you even get a single HK, even if you have no PvP gear at all. Hell, this past holiday I was doing just that and an enemy player was launched onto the tower to attack the cannons... When they started attacking mine, I didn't even bother getting out. He was melee and stayed close enough that I just aimed down until the cannon was hitting the platform it was sitting on and fired away. Wound up killing the guy.
Philster043 Jan 27th 2012 5:40AM
On my feral druid, I actually got the achievement pretty quickly in Isle of Conquest too, but not using a vehicle. I basically just stayed with most of the group and used stuff like entangling vines to annoy the Alliance. Funnily enough, I never once died - it's like being a gnome just made the Alliance overlook me the entire time. I wish I had thought of a vehicle, though!

Anything PVP related is bad and should be removed imo.
yes i know, PVP is not for everyone and IS a part of the game.
I GET THAT.
But FORCING players to PVP for PVE stuff is just bad imho.
DragonXero Jan 27th 2012 5:23AM
While I fully dislike PVP and want to agree with you, I simply cannot, in good faith, do so. Why? Because the PVPers feel the same way about all the PVE content. In the end, we and they have to deal with roughly the same about of BS because we're not geared properly for the encounter. I will say that we probably have a bit of a harder time with our runs, comparatively. PVPers have to kill the same number of BS combos that we do, but they are prepared for it. Let's face it: People who have soaked their gloves in Deathwing's molten blood, hardened it with his tears, and stood triumphant over his corpse will stand almost zero chance in the BGs. People who burn their lives away pwning some n00bs in the Arenas and BGs will be geared to the teeth and perfectly capable of pulling off relatively acceptable DPS for a heroic mode single boss that doesn't even really need a tank usually (c'mon, a ret pally can tank Headless Horsemen, without heals). Sure, you're going to end up right on top of the healers on the DPS charts for any recent raids, but nobody's even going to notice that for the holiday enemies. The difference is, the content that PVPers need to take down for the holidays is actual different content from usual. The content PVErs need to take on is the exact same thing that people in arena gear take on daily.
Simple solution to all this? Make all the PVE and PVP achieves equivalent. For every PVP achievement, put in a PVE one that can take its place. Give us an either/or way to do these achieves, and both sides can be happy. Thus, you don't need to drag an orphan into the BGs if you're a PVE player and you don't have to take them to meet every single heroic boss if you're a PVP player.

DragonXero: While you sound reasonable, remember that WoW is PvE at its core, and PvP is more or less a minor feature that got pumped up due to player demand.
Adnarish Jan 26th 2012 6:18PM
School of Hard Knocks! Oh, you mentioned that already. Still: School of Hard Knocks!
Also: the 'get lucky or come back next year RNG'-achievements like the Hallows End pet drop before 2011.
Caylynn Jan 26th 2012 6:31PM
Well, at least the RNG achievements (mostly) aren't required for the Metas.
- signed someone who still has no brewfest or hallow's end mount :(

What's wrong with dying a few times to get an achievement? Everything in this game involves dying. I level alts, I die. I do PvE, I die. I do PvP, I die A LOT. About the only activity in this game that doesn't involve dying is cornering the AH, and of course by definition, Ironman runs. There's nothing wrong with running the risk of death to get something done!
(No, I am not referring to the annual crapfest that is School of Hard Knocks. Just that it's okay in my book that some achievements have an element of danger in them.)
VioletArrows Jan 26th 2012 7:36PM
There's a damn big difference between dying a couple times, and having achievements that require putting faith in a community that's been shown time and again that it will do ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING including shoot itself in the foot just to ruin other people's fun and spite itself. :/
Nathanyel Jan 26th 2012 6:22PM
While Alliance may do Pilgrim's Peril on a PvE server without problems, Horde side has two cities with guards near the tables (Ironforge and Exodar) which will at least flag you, or kill you if you're not 85 yet, and another city that requires flying to avoid dying - considering the minimum level for the Meta is 55 due to Terokkar Turkey Time, which you can do even after the event if you're not 55 yet.
Turkeynator - yes, in the first year definitely, but there were less and less people doing it concurrently in later years, never ran into problems that weren't my own fault then.
And achievements like Turkey Lurkey and Fistful of Love (though not Shake Your Bunny Maker) are actually quite easy if you have a friend with a free character slot, or just a trial account (well, exlucding Worgen/Goblins)
Deathgore Jan 26th 2012 6:23PM
Still haven't got School of Hard Knocks, and now that I'm on my third main, I just don't have the patience for it. For someone who rarely PVPs it's too overloaded whether running a pre-made or not. Most of the holiday achievements I've been able to get without resorting to asking guildies for help and now with SWTOR trimming down our WoW chapter it just isn't worth it. Blizz just needs to take it off the requirement for the meta and let people move on without it. WORST. ACHIEVEMENT. EVER!!!!!!!
Caylynn Jan 26th 2012 6:27PM
School of Hard Knocks is definitely the worst. Followed closely by trying to get the stupid Elder in Orgrimmar as Alliance. *sigh* I hate dying. :P
eirinefrostblade Jan 26th 2012 9:04PM
The Org elder is actually not that hard to get... If you can be awake at about 3-4am server. You just have to fly up reeeeaaaaallllly high and wait for the damned flying pats to go away.
Telwar Jan 27th 2012 9:37AM
The flying patrols are at specific altitudes. You can come in above them, and then swoop down when you have a chance.
I can't say that I have had a problem getting to holiday stuff in Org, TB, or UC since we got old world flight.
Luotian Jan 26th 2012 6:30PM
School of Hard Knocks has GOT to go. It has been the only one lacking on my Nelf hunter for her matron title for TWO YEARS. I'm just not selfish enough to do what needs to be done and completely screw over my teammates. I'm a hunter. I'm not meant to carry flags or solo cap things in PvP. I know this, as do they, and I can't be so cruel to my teammates as to do that.
SamLowry Jan 26th 2012 7:57PM
Maybe that's how I was so easily able to get Hard Knocks on four characters: I don't care about PvP. Good, bad, I don't care--I'm just doing what the 'chieve tells me to do.
Mummrah Jan 26th 2012 10:16PM
This is coming from someone who never PvPed outside of some WSG/AB/AV while leveling. Please. As a hunter you shouldn't be running the flag in WSG, but in EotS, there's no reason to not do so as long as your team has mid. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with capping something by yourself as a hunter (or any other class for that matter) if you are able to. If the opposing faction leaves a node unguarded (something done often during that week b/c they're trying to do the same thing you are) then they deserve to have it solo capped. None of the required parts of the achievement inherently call for you to go against the SOP of any of the BGs. Stop making excuses and figure it out.
Draelan Jan 27th 2012 1:49AM
School of Hard Knocks DOES, however, pit you against your own teammates... You, and everyone else going after the achievement, are fighting to return the enemy flag in WSG, fighting to be the one to grab and cap the flag in EotS (to the point where I've seen 90% of my own faction gathered around the flag in the center, ignoring the fact that we didn't own a SINGLE TOWER for them to cap it at...), capturing a point in AB, and AV...
And there's almost ALWAYS PvPers who are resentful of these people who don't care for BGs clogging things up and ruining their fun... Not unlike how a PvEer would be angry at someone who comes into their dungeon or raid and runs all over the place, pulling trash and bosses and wiping the group just for an achievement so they could then abandon the group and let in the next person wanting their achievement... as frustrating and annoying as it is when you just want to get your meta, I can understand to a degree why some players become downright hostile and go out of their way to make the achievement hunters as miserable as they are.
What I think would work BETTER is, instead of having to complete specific objectives in each BG with your orphan out, how about change the achievement to "Win each of the following Battlegrounds with your orphan out." It doesn't eliminate the achievement and still encourages people to go into BGs, but instead of encouraging players to fight with and resent their own teammates, it promotes actually learning how the BGs generally work and working together to achieve a common goal. (Winning.) PvPers would still have to deal with a lot of new people who don't normally do BGs, but at least they'd all be working towards a common goal instead of the often times counter-productive behaviors that the achievement currently fosters. (Still looking at YOU, EotS with everyone in the center and no towers capped...) And you never know... the achievement might encourage someone into the BG, and then seeing how it's played correctly might cause someone to realize that they enjoy it.
artifex Jan 26th 2012 6:30PM
I hated School of Hard Knocks when I did it, but looking back, it wasn't the hardest for me. I just hadn't done battlegrounds before. And those of us who were new caught grief over it, until people figured out we'd just clog their games until we got our achievements, so it was better to not hinder us.
Actually, the worst for me might have been the flame baton tossing catching during the Midsummer Fire Festival, because at the time I was playing exclusively on a Macbook, without a mouse. That meant either keyboard turning (doomed to fail by design, I suspect) or using the trackpad. I eventually got it on my old main, but gave up trying on my alts. Now, even though I play on a desktop with mouse (the Macbook is too slow to do anything but bank alt type stuff now) I still cringe, partly because I still keyboard turn a lot :)
BTW, it took me 13 months to finish. It was actually something in Brewfest that I had to repeat. Getting free 310% flying was so awesome, too, especially once it rolled to other mounts. (I originally chose tailoring specifically to get flying carpets for my lock, so of course I wanted to use them whenever possible.)
