*sigh* I hate having to re-learn how to play my paladin every single expansion. I've given up on ret completely, since I can't stand the ret that Cataclysm brought us. Holy has always been my main spec, with ret as my off-spec, but after having my holy paladin as my main through all of BC and Wrath, my new main is my shadow priest.I still love my holy paladin, but I am very tired of the roller-coaster that Blizzard has us on.

This. I love my pally, he was my first Character, and my first to each level cap, but re-learning him every other patch (especially late Cata, as it ALWAYS seemed to be mana cost/regen nerfs targeted at high-geared players, that made my lower geared toon cry while trying to gear in heroic 4.0 dungeons) it seems has left me cold, and now he languishes behind my new-main Mage and even my levelling Shammy in terms of playtime.

I now have 4 healers, druid, disc and holy proest and now a pally. There's enough similarity between those first three healers for me to even map the same key combinations for a lot of similar spells, but the pally was something different. With the Holy Power mechanic powering either a single target or AoE mana free spell, the wonderful holy radiance and the fact that the AoE is directional means the pally is a lot different to play and a little more interesting. I certainly haven't been spamming HR, so I don't think the nerf matters too much. It does explain however why I keep getting beaten on my other healers by pallys in the DS RRF ;-)

The fundamental problem with pally balance has always been really rather simple. The design of the class at its most fundamental level was and still is broken. This means that the space between horribly broken and face roll is extremely narrow if such a space exists at all. Blizz keeps trying to find it, but every gear tier breaks the balance point. They've tried to change the design in cata by adding holy power, but that's mostly added RNG.A lot of the problem is the resource system and it affects shaman as well. Melee and mana simply doesn't mesh well. If it's meaningful it makes gearing too difficult and if it's not you end up with 9-6-9 pally tanking. RNG resources like holy power are not the answer either for essentially the same reason. On the other hand healing without mana doesn't fit the current design, so we have pally's swinging back and forth along with shaman. The only class which manages melee and heals so far is the Druid and they pretty much completely swap resource systems.
