Blizzard forums MVP calls fellow PvPers to arms

I think this sort of player participation is really important. Much as I'm a fan of pew-pew over QQ, constructive criticism is a great thing. Eldacar wants to know your opinion on the current Mists of Pandaria PvP proposals and what you love about PvP, as well as what your PvP gripes are from Cataclysm.
What's great about our particular omniscient deity in Azeroth is that Blizzard not only listens but responds. And, if it gets enough consistent feedback about something, it may well do something about it. So if you have something constructive to say, get over there and say it! You could shape the future of Azeroth.
However, what nobody is looking for is OMG Blizz nerf mages like now! -- so just don't, OK?
Here are Eldacar's guidance questions to think about when posting:
- What are your biggest PVP-related quality of life issues (things that are an inconvenience but don't significantly affect gameplay or balance)?
- What Cataclysm BG changes and additions did you like?
- What Cataclysm Arena changes and additions did you like?
- What Cataclysm general PVP changes and additions did you like?
- What are your top issues with Battlegrounds in Cataclysm?
- What are your top issues with Arenas in Cataclysm?
- What are your top issues with general PVP in Cataclysm?
I can definitely think of some things to point out, and I'm sure you can too.
Go to Eldacar's thread right now and make your voice heard!
Do you want to capture flags, attack towers, invade cities, and dominate the Arena for your faction? Do you dream of riding your War Bear with pride? We'll steer you to victory with the secrets of PvP, including proven addons and keybindings that win!

Naked PVP! A test of pure skill rather than a combo of skill/time invested.
Allow white weapons/shields and nothing more.
It would revolutionize the quality of leveling battlegrounds.
Homeschool Jan 30th 2012 6:46PM
As well as being simultaneously more attractive and repulsive. Naked male gnomes running around? *shudder*
Noyou Jan 30th 2012 7:56PM
I would love this. Not so much the naked part, but the stripped down PvP. Real simple. Not all macroed up and addon driven. Just my toon and your toon. Maybe they can make standard/plain uniforms to wear. This doesn't have to be the only format for PvP, but it would be a nice option to have. I suppose one could start a league like this on your own. Something to think about.

I would like to see PvP less gear based. It sounds like they are going to try to fix the problem of resilience. Nothing like trying to fight a tank and 2 healers that get a 40% bonus in damage reduction. Still sucks to get stomped by someone in full arena gear in a regular battleground. Granted I know those guys live for that kind of advantage, but maybe Arena and Rated Battlegrounds should have separate gear that only works in those areas.

Wintergrasp as an instanced battleground. Defend / attack is selected completely at random. It's over when the inner gates are demolished, or the three towers are demolished, or when 20 minutes have passed.
othragon Jan 30th 2012 7:02PM
I'd be happy with just seeing Wintergrasp brought to current content. Easily the best PvP experience i've ever had in WoW, despite my server being a small one, those battles were just plain epic.
STEAMROLLLLL!!!!

It wouldn't even be difficult to bring Wintergrasp back up to snuff with modern content. All you'd have to do is upgrade the honor rewards to levels more like those rewarded in TB and upgrade the vehicles to level 85 (or 90) health pools and damage levels. Maybe even bring back WG commendations and have them reward MoP gear. I bet TB will still be played if the honor rewards remain high enough.
Noyou Jan 30th 2012 7:50PM
^^ This. Was one of my hopes that I posted on the PvP forum. I feel WG/TB should stay current. I also think there could be a max level bracket and a lower bracket. As far as it being instanced, I don't know. But I also think more than 5 people should be able to participate at a time. If the other side cannot field more, they need to figure out something more than having tenacity or penalizing the other faction. Making it relevant again would probably take care of having only the minimum participate.

This would be fantastic. I dearly miss Wintergrasp, as it was the battleground that got me into PvP in the first place. I had some fantastic matches there: a few instances of making a desperate, last-ditch defense at the vault's gate, some down-to-the-wire assaults, and plenty of instances of clever tactics that turned the battle around for us.

WG was what finally got me into PvP as well and I loved it, quickly getting all related achievements. I sometimes go back to roflstomp it in hopes of feeling the old magic but it just makes me sad.

Great write up Olivia. I like when they do things like this to bring attention to us non-regular forum posters and get us involved. I put my two cents in on my mage, Shakakhan. :)
Revynn Jan 30th 2012 8:39PM
Add Halaa to that list as well.

PvP just feels too punitive.
Would comment on the forum, because the OP is articulate and clearly means well, but the thread is already 20 pages deep and attention spans just can't hold on that long. But I will say this - it would be nice for it to be easier to get into PvP. For as long as I can remember, I've despised PvP - not because I don't like a good test of skill - but rather because of the vast imbalance between a character who's geared and spoiling for a fight, and someone who's just starting out.
Part of the allure of pvp is that no two fights will ever be the same, but that's also a huge drawback. With PvE, you have predictable outcomes that allow you to learn and grow, and ultimately achieve. In PvP, you have to suffer through continuous deaths, over and over and over again, often learning nothing from them, simply because of a gear imbalance. It's just not fun.
I think Cataclysm actually made this worse, and I'm really hopeful that Mists will develop a way to encourage people to PvP. Maybe an after-action report, like what we get through raids now... "Get out of the fire!" could turn into "Use your trinket now!" Get people to learn in a similar way they learn in raids.

Please put your thoughts on the forums, We need people like you stating exactly what you are stating here. I also agree that there should be a new tier from like 0-2.5k resilience (or however they want to do it). It would be like having well geared heroic players have to run heroics with fresh max level toons. Not that it can't be done, but is this fair? Is this how we want to be subjected to PvP? I know I wouldn't I love pvping while I level up because it's more pure. Sure there are those who totally gear up for it, have the heirlooms, etc. But once you hit max level, I think there are more high end tuned players feasting on the fresh ones. And I don't think it is right.
You have a voice and it is a good one. You should post, no matter how many have posted. They will take the time and read through the good ones. I beg you, and anyone else on the fence about it. Please do so.

They already did this in Cata. With the exception of your weapon and trinkets you can get crafted pvp gear for every slot that is comparable to last seasons honor gear.
If you go into a bg with a full set of crafted pvp gear you'll find yourself having a lot of fun.
Amaxe Jan 30th 2012 9:52PM
Hmm, how about PvP only armor and weapons. The idea of white only is interesting.
Of course I guess you need some sort of reward system, but not such awesome rewards that it becomes "you have to PvP to advance" in outlook.
Of course if it is too weak, then the PvPers will complain about how Blizz ignores them...
Oh FFS! Just dump the damn system already!

Boulderfist represent!
Vega Jan 30th 2012 10:12PM
Boulderfist represent! On topic though, I would say that the lack of world pvp is what I miss most. That may be because everyone has just gone carebear, and just logs if they see world pvp while leveling. Not sure what the solution to bring back that 'nervous, look over your shoulder every 10 seconds' feeling you used to get in STV would be.
**double post downvote the one above please**

My first character was on Boulderfist. The day the AQ gates open is still my favorite moment of WoW. Granted I d/ced over a dozen times, but the moments I was on it was just a frantic race by both factions to get to Silithus, people banding together to fight off ambushes, the whole strength in numbers thing. I never did make it to Silithus but still, was worth it.

Regarding PvP in Cata, here are my grievances:
The presence of PvE gear in Rated PvP. If you want to abuse the dragon slaying items in PvP, go have fun in Random BGs, not in an Arena or a Rated BG, where victory or defeat mean something. What Blizzard should do is create a check on gear when someone enters a 3v3 or 5v5 Arena and a Rated Battleground. Any piece of equipped gear that exceeds the item level of that season's Honor gear should instantly have its durability reduced to zero. 2v2 Arena and Random BGs are exempt for this of course.
The disparities in scaling between resilience and damage. Even with over 40% damage reduction, people can dish out damage greater than someone's health pool in mere seconds. This flies in the face of Blizzard's stated goals of wanting to reduce burst damage and prolong PvP fights.
Directly related to the above problem is the sheer proliferation of interrupts and the resulting proliferation of instant casts. Every class in the game, barring priests and hunters, has an interrupt. Due to the ridiculous nature of damage, a single interrupt on a healer can lead to a player death. At the same time, the instant cast nature of certain classes makes them nigh impossible to counter. Implementing a DR on interrupts (as is the case with silences) as well as increasing their cooldowns should lead to more casted spells, with the instant casts being weakened.
Separate balancing for class abilities and combat ratings in PvE and PvP. Apply the same rules that exist for CC and abilities such as Colossus Smash for Warriors to all similar effects so as not to adveresely affect PvE output. Apply the same conditions to the Mastery combat rating as those that exist for Resilience, i.e., make it exclusive to PvE gear and have no effect in PvP. This should apply especially to masteries that directly boost healing / damage outputs (Warlock masteries, for example) OR have randomly triggered effects (Arms, Marksman, Elemental masteries, for example). In case of masteries such as that of Holy Paladins, bake those into the spec and put in a mastery that is more direct in its nature.
Reduce RNG in PvP. Random enchant proccs, ability proccs, effects such as dodge and parry have no place in a competetive environment. Deathwing, Arthas and Illidan don't care if they randomly take a 100k hit to the face or if a feral dodges 5 of their attacks in a row. Allow random effects as a part of cooldowns though, such as Evasion increasing dodge or Shield Block increasing block chances.
I am going to go out on a limb here and sound very cocky, but implement half of what I have mentioned and watch the PvPers praise you to high heavens. SWTOR, Rift et al have failed in PvP BECAUSE WoW is special. It has a certain something. Don't destroy the potential to have a brilliant PvP game alongside the PvE.
Oh, and talk to Dustin Browder and the rest of Starcraft team and give WoW the tools to become an entertaining e-sport (replays, spectator mode, etc).
