I think the gearing model was supposed to have only applied to Tier 11. Ever since Tier 12 and 13, Justice points can be used to really boost your character's gear to better tackle the current raiding tier of the time. So in the overall scope of things, I'd say the gearing model has succeeded. That said, I'm reluctant to take my 339 priest into any more heroics. Maybe I'm too spoiled by what gearing up was like during Wrath, but blowing through my mana every pull because the DPS are being idiots, CC has become a foreign language, and the Tank seems a lot squishier than they're supposed to be isn't my idea of a good time.

Yeah... it's gotten even worse. In 4.2, some geared players still ran the older heroics because they were easier than the Zuls. The HoT heroics are so easy and take so little time that the only people running the original Cata heroics any more are the people in a narrow ilvl band from 329 to 353.So, most of the time, the experience of running those heroics is very similar to when we ran them at the beginning of Cata... but players are trying to zerg them like the Wrath heroics. It's all kinds of awful. So players with ilvl too low to get into the Hour of Twilight heroics are stuck in a really awkward place where the intended content for them (the old heroics) are probably the least time-efficient means of getting geared up. In that way, I think the gearing system for Cata did fail.

The old Cata heroics are still pretty brutal on a squishy, undergeared tank and most groups just don't have the patience anymore for someone that's still sporting 333's and quest greens. As it is, I'm trying to deck her out in enough BoE drops and crafted items to skim past the 353 ilvl requirement to enter the much easier HoT heroics. It'd be a much different story if she was Ret, but I can't stand the current iteration of the spec.

don't be so reluctant to take a 339 ilvl tank or healer to a heroic, you get justice points fairly quickly so even if the first runs are bad it gets better very fast, and you might get an upgrade in drops.also chances are that your healer/tank complement will have an ilvl of 359+, and even if s/he has a 339 ilvl too the heroic will still be doable =).
