A nice writeup for someone coming back to the game after a very long break might be a great guide. Like... so you took 9 months off and you just came back to your main in blues... how to get into the raid finder in a weekend :)

I feel your pain! As a casual player with a job and a family I just couldn't justify the time instances took at the start of the expansion.. So I chose to level up a couple of alts instead..The gear grind just wasn't an option. Now..Spend a bit of gold on crafted 377 level gear and you've skipped the first two tiers and are good to go for heroics. It's a whole different world :) You can just run heroics for valor to get a tier 13 set bonus. To be honest I've preffered running normals for justice points to vendor for honor tokens for old pvp gear to transmog. :) Nearly finished my hunter, he's looking fine! Great thing is, when the next expansion is out the token grind wont be for nothing..That transmog gear I actully keep! As opposed to binning them for quest greens in Mists! :)
