Our group has progressed to heroic Yor'sahj, and I've been persuaded to dump my holy pvp offspec for a ret spec so our DK can solo tank. So I've dumped a bunch of gold into BoEs and reforging and gemming, loaded up CLCRET and practiced with it at the dummies, and gone through raidfinder a couple of times to learn the dance moves in easy mode. But I'm still pulling less damage in ret than I do in prot, especially AoE in black phases. Part of it is that my gear isn't quite caught up, part is that I'm just not as quick fingered as I will be later on. But I'm sure that there are tips and tricks that I'm missing. Can you recommend some "Remedial Ret For The Recovering Prot" reading?

If you haven't already, be sure to switch to Seal of Righteousness for the adds. Per Elitist Jerks, SoR pulls ahead of SoT with 4 or more targets. For adds rotation, I will throw down Cons, DS, HW, rinse & repeat. Kick in Inquisition as soon as I hit 3 HP. But by then they're usually down.

P.S. My only experience is with the raid finder fight, so given that you're doing heroic, you will probably have plenty of time to build up 3HP for Inq.!Since Cons and HW have longer CD's, you will probably have time to do a Judge and insta-Exo as fillers on random targets too.

Having a 3HP Inq up isn't too difficult. Remember, you should be refreshing it as part of your regular rotation on Yor'sahj and the ooze anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue. One thing that I've found, however, is that as Ret you need to be aware of when you're going to be switching to your AOE rotation. For instance, Consecration has a hefty CD, but it still fits inside your single target rotation. Make sure you've got it available for your AOE phase. Against Yor'sahj specifically, don't refresh it when oozes spawn unless it's not going to elad into a Black phase. As well, Consecration and Holy Wrath eat a lot of mana, especially when you're also swapping your seal, so make sure you're topped off ahead of time. There's nothing worse than getting ready to go whole hog on a bunch of adds, only to find the tank's empty and you're waiting for enough mana to regen so you can Judge.

Also, since Divine Storm STILL (!!!) doesn't work with Zealotry, unless you REALLY need the extra DPS from your four piece, it's probably better to push AW/Zeal back until you're not AOEing.

@jazz.panther,That is not good advice.Switching to Seal of Righteousness is not worth it for most of these adds, since they don't live long enough to make up for the dps you lose from giving up GCDs to switch between seals. Also, blistering tentacles have to be single targeted anyway, and they are the nastiest multiple adds. I would only switch for fragments, and even then it is situational.Including Holy Wrath in your AoE rotation isn't useful at all, since it isn't actually an AoE effect: it always does the same total damage (low) and merely divides between targets in range. So it should be no higher in your priority than it is in your single target rotation (i.e. use it if nothing else is up). It certainly should never come ahead of judgment, especially assuming you have your 2 piece bonus. Consecration is a mana pig and does very low damage as well. I certainly don't prioritize it; even against multiple targets EJ keeps it second lowest priority in our rotation (with HW at the bottom).Basically, at 4 targets or more you switch to divine storm instead of crusader strike. If you have a free GCD (and another at the end of the phase) or it will be an extended AoE phase, switch to seal of righteousness. I strongly recommend the elitist jerks retribution concordance and the thread stickied to the top of Blizzard's paladin forum for more detailed information on our rotation.

I can't stress enough that Holy Wrath is not a true AoE effect, even though it hits multiple targets. It is really only useful to fill gaps in the rotation whenever nothing else is up, and that is no different in AoE than in single target situations.

If you can, take a look at your parses. Are you lining up your CDs properly? Stacking AW/Zeal and doing it as often as possible? (aside from saving it for a lust or not doing it during an AOE phase) And don't forget the Guardian, he's a great boost. If you can manage it, pop him early and then do your AW/Zeal after about 10 seconds for maximum str boost. But if not, just make sure they're all stacked together. One of the big ret things is max out your CDs as much as possible. Is Inq up almost all of the time? It's not too hard to keep it over 90% in most fights. Furthermore, are you refreshing it too often? Sometimes people do that and lose some TVs in there. If possible, make sure the timer is in single digits. If you're full of HP and it's 9 sec, you can probably squeeze one more TV or pray for a proc. If it's lower than 5, smack CS and refresh Inq. Also, if you can, try and get the 2 pc set from RF or the extra tokens from your raids. Having Judgment give you HP is a godsend. It will help you out a lot with managing Inq and getting more TVs in there. The other thing to remember is ret can really be heavily influenced by RNG. You want to hit a certain base level, but don't be discouraged if you see a wild difference sometimes between parses. This fight I got 40 Divine Purpose procs! This pull I got 2! Sometimes if you absolutely can not figure out why your DPS seemed low on a pull, check those counts on the log. (Art of War too) The RNG gods can be cruel and fickle lords.
