What makes a bad word bad?

It would be nice if every word of no meaning to you had the same lack of meaning to everyone else - unfortunately life experiences inform how people react to words. As one of the worst examples, would you honestly keep throwing the word "rape" around (which happens a lot in WoW) if someone effected by rape asked you not to? Probably not.
