Sometimes these things can go both ways. I remember healing a run of hour of twilight, halfway through the tank says to me "I had some doubts about you, but you're healing this fine". I presume its because i was using am ilvl 318 helm (and still am; curse the world for not dropping a better hat). Well, i got really defensive, and started laying out all these explanations about why there was no need to worry (my average is 371! Everything else is epic! I've run this a million times! I have all four healing classes at 85!). He just told me to relax, that he was just saying I was doing a good job.

Tldr version, sometimes people overreact to criticism, and that can make these situations worse.
