Retribution bug hotfixed, Vengeance temporarily returns to PvP
Zarhym has given us an update on the bug with Seal of Truth from yesterday, and it opens a fascinating window into the complexities of the code that ultimately is the World of Warcraft.
Zarhym - Update on Retribution Paladin Bug
I won't lie, I find this fascinating. The idea that the issue lies in a system that on the surface would seem totally unrelated gives me the shivers just imagining what it must be like to maintain and advance the design for code that's been around for years and years. I have to agree that letting Vengeance sometimes pop up in PvP is probably the better option. It's only going to happen in an extremely limited set of circumstances, anyway.
I'm also glad only extreme edge cases will be seeing bans, as I had no idea the bug even existed while leveling my ret paladin last night and only figured it out afterwards.

Zarhym - Update on Retribution Paladin Bug
The bug where paladin Seals could sometimes cause excessive damage has been fixed. This bug came as a result of a hotfix we put in to fix an issue where some attacks, such as Scatter Shot, were still causing Vengeance in PvP situations. While these things may seem totally unrelated, it has to do with our proc system, which is an extremely complicated mechanic under the hood. We reverted that hotfix, meaning you may sometimes see Vengeance in PvP. But we don't think that will present a major balance concern at this time.
To be clear, we have no current plans to take action against players who experienced this bug last night unless we come across any extreme cases. The error was ours and we haven't seen any evidence -- so far -- of players excessively exploiting the bug. We reserve the right to take action if we do find evidence of players crossing the line to repeatedly exploit this bug for major in-game advantages.

So you lost another BG. Big deal. Honest or not, this "exploitation" didn't do any long term damage. If someone got realm first on something, then sure ban them. If they went from 0 to 2.7k with this bug, then sure ban them. If they farmed Naxxramas with this bug, I don't see what the problem is. Noone was hugely affected and they get to have a little fun.
You sound a lot like that hunter in LFR who wanted to report our ret for exploiting that bug. in LFR. Serious progress was made that half-raid, world breaking progress.
:/

What part of that confused you?

I reported no one... but let's get right to the point... cheating is cheating, if you knowingly cheat and are not punished for it in a game then you have no reason not to do at every opportunity.
You can make excuses, minimize, and QQ all you want, but those who cheated are... well, Cheats.

Do you think Blizz will consider ripping off wins in AV 'extreme', or taking unearned achievs in pvp? NO.
But to those who were victims, to those who were honest, and to those who feel that cheats are being rewarded... yeah, it's extreme.

Didn't even get to notice this bug. The instance servers bugged out and locked half our raid group inside various instances, and the rest gave up and logged off.

No evidence of players excessively exploiting the bug? How about those logs of 10man groups with two ret pallies and a bunch of people doing 15k dps downing 4-5 heroic bosses plus Madness? Banning is excessive, I agree, but those people really should have their achieves taken away.

see what happens when you try to remove veangance from pvp? more problems

I'm a little bummed as I had done my weekly LFR on my retadin mere hours before the bug cropped up. However, the LFR I did later on my mage was the most fun EVAR! Yor's trash down in less than 1:30? Yes please! An LFR where I didn't even need to refresh my unglyphed molten armor? Yes please!

The reason blizz isn't punishing people for doing some ridiculous things last night is that most of what was done was really just for fun. No one thought this bug would last longer than a few hours, so people took the opportunity to do ridiculous stuff for the sake of doing ridiculous stuff. The people who went out and got progression kills or ridiculous arena ratings were taking advantage of the bug for *cough* less wholesome reasons, but even the people that got H Ryolith down in 15 secs were clearly just there to show off how silly the bug was.

I could swear that the prot pally in TB yesterday had Vengeance on for a few moments before he fell over - now I know I wasn't imagining things. Not that I care so much, though, this is what I have tranq shot for. (Although I do feel the pain of the teams who see this in arena, if it pops up there too, and don't have means to remove it.)
But it is nice to know that an occasional vengeance on someone I glance at in pvp is not my eyes deceiving me. :P
