Blue posts
It wasn't long ago since we first announced an approaching milestone. This awe-inspiring event -- sure to leave the planet standing still, its people in awe of the greatness -- is upon us. You may now collect your refreshing fountain drinks at ampm convenience stores in remarkable, limited-edition creations forged for just this purpose. Kil'jaeden, Illidan, the Lich King, and Deathwing have been memorialized on what are now the only drinking cups that have ever mattered. They will only wait so long for you to realize the growing thirst within you. They will not tolerate your failure to locate your nearest ampm.
Get your epic World of Warcraft cup today and become a part of history. Just don't forget that, in this case, even history needs a straw.

While we're still working out many of the details regarding account-wide achievement functionality, I want to clarify that we plan for the system to apply to all achievements -- not just those added in Mists of Pandaria. It's intended to be an overall change to the current achievement system.
Our goal is to make it so that you feel like you only have to get an achievement once. We think the time and effort you put into achievements should be evident regardless of which character you're playing. The update will be implemented at the Battle.net level and, as such, would apply to all of the attached World of Warcraft licenses on the account.

My eye has glimpsed the forming of an Ask CDev on the horizon... perhaps, even, Soon™! You would all do well to gather your questions now, in preparation for this momentous event.

"Our goal is to make it so that you feel like you only have to get an achievement once."
Would this include "Long Strange Trip"? If so, then I've been wasting a lot of time recently.
I See What I Did There Feb 7th 2012 11:27PM
I would like to know this as well.
Skyrei Feb 7th 2012 11:30PM
We will have to see if you get the rewards along with the achievement for all characters or just the achievement done.
Though If it is only the achievement and not the reward as well... would this prevent characters from completing the achievement and getting the reward? Makes me think they would have to give you the reward on all characters.
Ailuvan Feb 7th 2012 11:40PM
The already-account wide achievements, like the "Log in during the N th anniversary", give the various pets to all your characters, even the ones that didn't exist during that anniversary.
Seems like it should be sending all the rewards to all the characters on your account going forward, once implemented.
Now, if only the Rep achievements would go account-wide...

There's probably a lot of design thought that will need to go with it. A Long Strange Trip and Headless Horseman are two opposite mount achievements. One you get the mount as a reward for completing the achievement. The other, you get the achievement for getting the mount.
Do I get one mount but not the other? Neither? Both? On a new character, when do I get them? How do I get them? And was my Dreadsteed FoS the mount or the quest? A LOT of questions.
GhostWhoWalks Feb 8th 2012 12:01AM
Considering that they've said they're working on account-wide mounts, this would be feasible.
SamLowry Feb 8th 2012 12:02AM
In the same vein, it would've been nice if all of the items purchasable from the Firelands vendors were BoA, because there's no way in heck I'm going to do something like that all over again with a second character.
Derek Feb 8th 2012 12:46AM
That's a darn good question! I haven't had the energy to try it on an alt, but I sure wouldn't mind an extra free mount on everybody! As to the pets from anniversaries, my new toons don't get the one from past years, only the ones for battle.net (penguin) and authenticator (corehound), plus collector's edition pets. Do other players really get the Blizzard Bear & mini Ony on new toons without mailing the account-bound pet around?
Noyou Feb 8th 2012 1:13AM
I have no problem with sharing the mount with other toons. Having done it 3 times so far, I don't think the toon should get the achievement or the riding speed perk. I can see arguments for both, I just think it's worth doing. I would probably still do it on other toons out of habit. Maybe not during children's week though :p

@Sam
I ran through Hyjal on almost all of 9 85's to open up the molten front. After having sludged through it once- no way I'm doing that again. And I would like to have some of the other profession recipes. I got the important one- 36s gem bags anyone? It would have been nice if the recipes were BoA at least.

Mounts will become account wide as will pets.
Give it time. With the achiev change, its just titles and tabards that also need the account wide change.
Once that happens, many of my biggest issues with the game will be removed.

"The already-account wide achievements, like the "Log in during the N th anniversary", give the various pets to all your characters, even the ones that didn't exist during that anniversary."
I'd sure like to know what "Nth anniversary" achievements you did for them to be counted as account-wide, because I sure as hell don't get an Onyxian Whelping and Baby Blizzard Bear every time I log in. If I want a character to have them, I've got to mail my BoA ones.
The only pets I get upon logging into a new character are my Collector's Edition pets, Pandaren Monk, and Mr. Chilly from the Battle.net account merger.

Making mounts account wide is a bit of a problem though. Does your paladin get your warock's Felsteed? Can your DK ride your pally's Charger?
SamLowry Feb 8th 2012 12:16PM
If you want to veer off on that tangent then you might as well ask when your warlock will be able to cast Consecrate.
These things are attached rather firmly to a class and trading them would be nonsensical.
I'm assuming that sharing mounts would mean that if one alt wins the Brewfest ram, for example, then all your alts on that account will have access to it.
JattTheRogue Feb 8th 2012 5:27PM
"Making mounts account wide is a bit of a problem though. Does your paladin get your warock's Felsteed? Can your DK ride your pally's Charger?"
Those are both spells that the class trains, not mounts in the way that you get the mount item then use it to put it in your spell book. I would assume they wouldn't be shared, but if they were: so what?

The cups still piss me off. Instead of buying one for $2, the only way for me to get one, excluding driving to one of the only 12 states those stores are in, is to pay the ridiculous price a reseller is going to price them at online. I am sure that eBayer wanting $10 per cup plus $5 shipping is a great price, or $50 for all 4.
Next time you do a promotion, Blizzard, try to get someone who's nationwide.
Peebers Feb 8th 2012 12:24AM
sup man? im gonna ask my friend on Seattle to pick me up a set. want in?
Al Feb 8th 2012 6:39AM
"sure to leave the planet standing still" - by hitting a smattering of states in one country.
Even for Blizzard, that's some nice hyperbole.
SamLowry Feb 8th 2012 7:41AM
Whatever happened to 7/11? That was always the go-to place for collectible cups.
Instead, we have to deal with an entity that has spread like a rather unpredictable infection to "over 1,100 locations covering CA, OR, WA, NV, AZ, OH, IL, GA & FL". (And don't even bother trying the "Station Locator" on their webpage--it gave me nothing no matter what I typed into it.)
Pam Feb 8th 2012 9:12AM
@SamLowry - None of those places are anywhere close to the middle of the country. I would have to drive almost 13 hours to find one of those stores.
It's like they think that no one from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, or Texas even plays the game. :)
