My best guess for the 90 degree roots is that it's because of all the fibers in there. Break a stick in two - you'll probably have sharp angles like that.

I would wager that if the graphics were photo-realistic there, it would be all splintery and stuff.

For token collection (love is in the air or DMF) Naxx arachnid trash is the best.

One of my guildies had me come help kill Naz'jar in Throne of the Tides on normal mode (and Ulthok), as well as the first two big elementals in Neptulon's corridor. If you leave the last two big elementals alive, all the little ones will keep continually spawning, and they drop love tokens! So you can farm them forever.
The rock borers in Stonecore also drop love tokens.
