The Queue: I write about elves on Usenet, Mom

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky (@adamholisky) will be your host today.
Anne wrote a great piece yesterday on how she tells her dad what she does for a living. I've had similar conversations with my parents. My mom will often ask what I do exactly, while we sit around the dinner table. "I write about elves and fairies," I tell her.
At that point, she just looks at me and says, "You left your job at the symphony for this?", with that shake of the head in the way only mothers can do.
Then I go back to eating dinner, being sure to finish my steamed rhubarb like a good little boy.
(Kidding. My parents are pretty awesome and fully support my endeavors on the internet.)
On with more stories from Lake Wobegon ...
Hob asked:
Does anyone know of a guide for soloing the Heroic Northrend dungeon achievements? I know there are some that CAN'T be soloed ("Share the Love", which requires a full party of five; and pretty much everything in the Oculus), but I'd really like to get Glory of the Northrend Hero. Trade on my server tends to be obnoxious, and my current guild has no interest in revisiting old content, so I'd like to solo as much of it as possible.
Check out the Wowhead comments for each of the achievements; that'll probably be your best bet. But as you mentioned, there aresome that can't be soloed. However, many can, and I've had some success just messing around on my warlock with them.
I think you'll have the easiest time if you just get another person or two and bang them all out. Try posting on the realm forums, too. I bet you'll run into a few people there if you don't have luck in trade chat. (I know you mentioned it's obnoxious, but sometimes it's the best bet.)
Bilbomoody asked:
Is it the World's End Tavern in Shattrath where you have a quest to start a bar brawl? I think that bar's my favorite, what with the nostalgia of BC and all.
As Jaq pointed out in the comments, the bar fight at the World's End Tavern is part of a quest chain that starts out in Nagrand, it's named "He Called Himself Altruis...".
You also start a fight in leveling a toon out in Thousand Needles with some Goblins. My 'lock had fun with that one (he's an instigator of Pure Evil™).
Joakim asked:
Do you think it will be possible for Blizzard to actually alphabetize (spelling?) the Glory of the Hero achievements?
Blizzard really needs to update its achievements UI to include things like searching, sorting, and filtering. I did a 25-man heroic Ulduar run the other week, and the hardest part of the run was finding all the achievements and tracking them to make sure we got 'em.

Alternative protocols/technology I write on:
Gopher, IRC, BBSes, Hotline, AOL Channels, and Yahoo Message Boards.
HTTP is for l00z3rs.

Wait.. you mean not everyone gets WoW Insider updates via ARCHIE?
Piper Feb 14th 2012 11:35AM
How could you forget CI$ and Prodigy? ^_^
Ah, Usenet, back with the Trolls were mighty and entertaining. Forum and trade chat trolls are but a pale, pale imitation.

Go Gopher or go home...
Twill Feb 14th 2012 11:57AM
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ANY OF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
Anyone? :)

speak the name of Leader Kibo, and he shall appear.

"I realize that when you hear Internet most of you just think of USENET" - something I heard from a speaker on a Con Panel in the early '90s
Shinae Feb 14th 2012 12:33PM
@Melvyl
Heheh, that was the case for me back then. In the late 90s, I kept correcting people whenever they referred to the web as "the internet" as the web was only a small part of it.

Showing my nerd cred here:
Gopher - used it
IRC - still use it
BBS - One word: MajorMud
Hotline - You got me there Adam, haven't used this one, but this was pretty niche even for the internet
AOL Channels - lol AOL was for noobz. Although I did do AIM party chat back in the day.
Yahoo Message Boards - I thought these were for stock pumping trolls (anyway I still use Yahoo Groups for a couple of groups I'm in).
I'll toss in a few others for lulz
ICQ, MSN, YIM, hotbot, Netscape Navigator, FTP, windows 3.0/3.1, DOS, Basic, Trash 80, graphing calculator tetris, 5318008

I was an AOL Guide way back... with the power to punt people offline wit the single press of a key. We we kinda like the WoW GMs, responding to calls for help, etc. I also helped out in the Homework Help area in the areas of English and cats :)

Part of me wants to answer Twill, another part of me remembers endless September and doesn't want to instigate another incident by posting on such a public website.
Also: I know of Gopher, but not really used it. Same with Hotline. I have used several BBSes, yahoo message boards and chat, and thankfully when my first online service was bought out by AOL, they switched their chat to IRC before the update to use AOL channels so I already knew to avoid those.

Don't forget up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right,b, a, start.
Am I doing this right?

@pyromelter
I was in the Majormud beta:P
It's still around. Also, Tradewars has been rewritten as a stand alone (you no longer need any bbs software to telnet to it)

Here's one for you, back in the day I was a HOST for the Imagination Network! Blizzard was part of Sierra and they did a dungeon MMO through the Imagination Network that I can't remember the name of.

Question for everyone
Is State of dps dead? If so is there another site that shows top dps in such an easy to read format? I always found it enjoyable to glance at that site and see how things were looking
Aoyi Feb 14th 2012 11:22AM
I highly recommend viewing http://worldoflogs.com/ for comparing dps. You can look at overall numbers for every encounter and even individual spec performance.
