Addon Spotlight: Scrolling combat text addons

The Addon Spotlight Team and I have been hard at work combing through emails in the Addon Mailbag, doing our best to get answers to as many questions that come in. Sometimes those questions are so good that they get featured right here on the column. Today is one of those magnanimous days.
A reader named Jeff sent me an email that stated he is in the market for a new scrolling combat text addon. His email didn't give an exact reason for the sudden swap from SCT staple Mik's Scrolling Battle Text, so the exact reason why he needs a different scrolling combat text display isn't known. I also don't want to assume that everyone just defaults to Mik's, but it has been the predominant force in scrolling combat text engineering and design in the last few years.
Here's the whole email:
Hey Mat,For a while, Mik's just didn't work. I think this was back a few patch ago, either in the patch 4.1 days or back near the end of Wrath of the Lich King. I had turned on the default floating combat text that came in the box, and lo and behold, the thing wasn't half bad. I needed more options and information, however, so a search was on for alternative scrolling combat text displays. It is good fortune, then, that I may pass on this timeless knowledge to all who wish to learn.
What's another scrolling combat text addon other than MSBT? Thanks!
Jeff
You've got options
One of the best aspects of the scrolling combat text addon category is that you have some pretty good options out there for addon choice. If you're not happy with the feature set of one addon, there might be another out there that tweaks things the way you want it. However, be warned, most scrolling combat text addons have their genesis in the same function, so most of what you get in one addon will be similar to others. It's all a matter of style and choice, with the occasional added feature here or there.
Blizzard's default floating combat text
True be told, the Blizzard scroll combat text (or "floating combat text," as Blizzard calls it) is pretty damn good. It's solid, people. Really solid. You've got your basic layout of incoming damage and healing as well as outgoing.
Blizzard also included a personal floating combat text that allows you to turn on or off notifications for things like combo points, auras, entering or leaving combat, low mana and health, etc. These notifications can also be fine tuned with scroll up, down, or fancy arc flavors.
While you don't get to move where the text appears or play with the fine details of the addon, Blizzard's floating combat text is already in the box and gives you a good idea about what you're getting into with scrolling combat text addons. Go to the main menu, hit the interface button, and under the Game tab, you'll see Floating Combat Text. Click this and enable it, making sure to hit the settings you want to display. You're done!
Check out Blizzard's default floating combat text in your interface menu today.
MSBT is king
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but Mik's Scrolling Battle Text (MSBT) has been the big daddy scrolling combat text for some time. I remember a day when Mik's had competition, but by whom escapes me completely. Mik's texts won out and was the guidepost for a long while of what the scrolling combat text addon should be all about.
And I didn't mind -- I loved Mik's. Everything that I wanted, I received from this gorgeous little addon. Easy configuration, quick text zone placement -- it was all here. There was a period of time as I discussed before where Mik's just died on me for some reason, which could be explained by a patch that changed the way scrolling combat text addons interacted with the game, but that's not here nor there now. Mik's is back and is doing things right.
The main difference between Blizzard's own floating combat text and an addon like Mik's or Parrot is that you gain an added layer of customization. All of the data is there, but now it gets to be viewed where you want to view it. You can select and move zones of text and change how they react and move, as well as have full control over the text size, font, speed, and other movement factors.
Mik's is the standard all scrolling battle text addons long to live up to. It's good stuff.

Alternatives are good because market competition is good. Mik's does not occupy the scrolling battle text space alone -- there are some good alternatives out there. Parrot is a fantastic scrolling combat text addon that will perform admirably. I used Parrot back when Mik's was giving me the runaround and was very impressed.
Adding new media and sounds is easy with Parrot, which utilizes SharedMedia to pull sounds and such. Parrot is simple, works out of the box, and never gave me any trouble. While Parrot didn't feel as feature-rich as Mik's, it was either buried deeper than I needed to go or the out-of-the-box experience was put together well enough that it didn't occur to me to change certain aspects of the addon.
Give Parrot a shot. You might find out that you like the simple stuff better than the overly complex. You might just shake the very foundation on which all of your scrolling combat text knowledge is based on.

What ya got?
I recommend Parrot when Mik's isn't the addon for you, but there are more alternatives out there. What is your favorite scrolling combat text addon, and is there any scrolling combat text addon that has the right feature set for you? Sound off in the comments below.
See you guys next week.

xCT is an extremely low memory alternative. Instead of replacing the default combat text, it basically reformats it to your specification and layout

Well there is the namesake of this class of addons - Greyhoof's Scrolling Combat Text
http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/scrolling-combat-text
also, don't forget the SCTD for damage feedback.

Is there a way to see crits and only crits. I haven't been able to find this option, and I find it hard to believe that I'm the only one who doesn't want to see all the numbers flying around the screen, just the big ones.
incoming00 Feb 16th 2012 8:06PM
i dont like seeing any numbers, so i just turned all that stuff off. i get a better view of what i'm attacking that way. playing wow on a 46" TV even at 1080p and those floating texts pop out really big blocking my view...
Pyromelter Feb 16th 2012 8:10PM
I've never done that, but I believe you can do that with MSBT. I have my MSBT set up so that the normal numbers are a normal sized font, and the crits are in a different font, bigger, and pop up at me like a jack in the box. I think you can turn off the normal outgoing damage in MSBT and just show the crits.
Jebediah54 Feb 16th 2012 9:57PM
I know for a fact that MSBT has that capability. I don't know where it is right off the top of my head, but I have it set up to do just that.

" the Blizzard scroll combat text ... is pretty damn good. It's solid, people. Really solid. You've got your basic layout of incoming damage and healing as well as outgoing."
It's the same basic combat text that has been in every single action game, rpg game, or any game with any kind of damage text in it, ever. I have no idea why you think it's solid; it's average. And it's very not solid if you ever have a lot of AoE going on. I can't imagine what it would be like on the path north of icewing bunker in AV in an AV turtle, if I was using the default combat text. I think my screen would just be one wall of yellow numbers.

That's my favorite part of the default combat text! I absolutely love the moments when I get an amazing Combustion spread and just sit in awe of SOOO MANY NUMBERS!!!!
harr01 Feb 16th 2012 8:48PM
There is one huge reason I cannot use these addons: AOE. I want to see the numbers fly up above the target. I want to know what adds are being damaged and where. Using MSBT, all damage just came up in one spot, and not above the mob that was being damaged.
Now for all I know this has changed or can be changed. If so I would really love it if ppl let me know what addon can do this. Or where the option is in Mik's.

Showing dmg above the enemy's head is an absolute must for me.
Doubly so when in pvp.
Ctmcstomperq Feb 17th 2012 12:29AM
You have some filtering controls in SCTD that allow you to ignore damage and healing up to a certain threshold, it's something like 500 or something, it does cut down on the spammy-ness of it tho.
Matt Feb 21st 2012 3:59PM
This is why I cannot use an addon for scrolling combat text. I have to have the #s coming up above they head of the mob that I damaged... not scrolling up in one place on the screen.

I've used EavesDrop before. It was alright, it kept everything in a nice, tidy list, but I ended up dropping it. I'm a healer, I don't really need to see numbers (even though seeing that bomb GHeal crit is nice).

"Scrolling Combat Text" (aka SCT) is my scrolling combat text addon of choice. I like the way the default Blizz UI handles combat text. When I started raiding in 4.0.3, thoughm I realized that I seriously needed to find a replacement. With two resto druids and a resto shaman as our default healing set-up, the bottom half of my visual field was getting smothered in green. SCT just fit my bill--simple, and could filter out small heals (from HoTs/totems) and only told me when I was getting a significant heal.
xenothaulus Feb 16th 2012 11:18PM
I have been using Scrolling Combat Text and SCTD for... well, ever, I guess. The built-in sucks (didn't even exist when SCT debuted) and I have never felt the need for other "fancier" ones.
et Feb 17th 2012 1:37AM
Ive also been using "SCT" from the beginning and never had a need to change to anything.
Though I find it mildly annoying there isn't a default profile for when new characters are created and can just use without having to copy from an existing one.
Same goes for domino, vuhdo and omen.

Hello!
I'm not sure if this has been covered before, but I'd love to see this column handle some addons that are particularly handy for LFR.
After a couple of LFR runs last week with some trolls that kept wiping the group over and over by starting encounters while half the group is there at half health, pulling bosses with trash still up etc, I've been looking at Who Pulled? (http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/whopulled) in particular. It would be nice to identify and call out the guys that do it immediately instead of having a 'no it was hunter X!' - 'No you!' fight in raid chat and cycling through dozens of new raid members before we find and kick the griefer.
However, looking at the comments on the curse site, the addon seems to require a fair bit of work still.
Would you recommend this addon or are there other good addons to show who pulled? And anything else that is nice with things you typically encounter in LFR?

Nice little add-on, going to give this one a try.

Hi!
I've been wanting to fraps my arena games for analysis.
However I dont want the realID names of my friends on the video.
Besides blacking it out on editing, is there an addon that can let me set Aliases and display those on the notifications and whispers instead of the names?
Lampp Feb 17th 2012 2:06PM
I have neve used a SBT add on before. Is there anything out there that would show me when an enemy in arena uses a CC or a kick and who it was used on? I currently use Juked but as I'm pretty new sometimes I tunnel vision and it would be nice if a big Ol' Mind Freeze or Kick warning popped up front and center...
